Epic Amazing Birthday This Friday... Help!!

The Eveleigh looks so lovely! I love farm to table cooking and cocktails. It has only 3.5 yelp stars which worries me, but I might just go anyway. I especially want to go back for Sunday Supper.

Epic Amazing Birthday This Friday... Help!!

My birthday is this Friday, and although it's last minute, I'd like to find somewhere perfect to go with my boyfriend and best friend. I'm big on ambiance and would love to eat on the water at sunset, but would be open to other types of awesome ambiance like a killer city view or a Moroccan tent kind of feel. I love kitch and historical restaurants too.

We're all in our mid 20's, foodies, and my friend is gluten free. I like all types and ethnicities of food, but am not crazy adventurous. (Like at Saddle Peak Lodge I probably wouldn't order the elk and rabbit.) I'd like to drink too, so it would be nice to find somewhere where drinks aren't $15 a pop.

Also, I'd like to keep it in the more budget friendly range, If possible. Maybe, $50 a person and below. This seems to be the biggest challenge of them all. This could be slightly stretched for the perfect place.

Last year I went to Susan Feniger's Street, and although the food was good, the service was terrible and practically ruined the whole night. Help me out, Chowhounders!

Studio City/NoHo on a budget

Amir's falafel is filling, delicious, and relatively healthy. A big plate of food with an array of sides for around 10 bucks. Shitty ambience though, definitely a take out place.

Along those lines, Hayat's awesome mediterranean too. The food's awesome... Juicy delicious chicken kabobs and garlic sauce, and cheap too. The service is great too.

Daichan's a great recommendation too. I love their poke bowls and the ambiance is wonderful.

For a night out, my boyfriend and I love the Great Greek in Sherman Oaks because the atmosphere is really fun (especially on the weekends, with live music and dancing waiters and drunk happy people) and the food is authentic and delicious. If we split an appetizer and an entree, it's totally affordable.

In North Hollywood, on Lankershim, Summer Canteen is a winner. They have incredible Thai food and the lunch special is an amazing deal. Each is around 10 or less, that comes with an egg roll, soup or salad, and rice. Ambiance is very modern and comfortable too. Stellar place...

Porto's in Burbank is a no brainer too. When I go I order so much and it feels like an amazing Cuban feast...

Oh, and one more. Tarzana Armenian deli for lunch. Wraps are really really good.

Tipping - How do you feel about tip jars?

At least $1 or 2 for sure, given to me or in the jar. Most of the time, it's the acknowledgement that I'm going out of my way to do something for them. I would say that 5-10% of the total bill is a nice tip to give a take-out server who at least greets you in a friendly manner. Like I said, it's not an easy job to do, and pays so very little, that the tips matter very much.

If you can afford to tip, you should. And I understand, if you can't afford to tip, but with the prices at the establishment I worked at, there are no excuses.

Authentic Oaxacan Mole

The best mole I've ever had was from my Mexican friend's Mom back in New York, and I've been craving it hardcore ever since. I'd love a plate of sauce with chicken and maybe some queso blanco crumbled on top. Mmm... Any suggestions?

Do you tip for take out?

I have hardly any money to myself, and still try to tip at least $1 for take-out. Especially if the cashier is friendly and attentive, in my eyes, they deserve it.

Tipping - How do you feel about tip jars?

I used to work on a food truck out here in LA, and people are very inconsistent with their tipping. Some tip generously, I've had $5-$10 tips (at most) , but on average $1-2 if they decide to tip at all. The worst is that sometimes I'd have to leave the truck to bring customers their food, and it doesn't even cross their minds to tip. Just because I work on a truck and not in a sit-down restaurant is no excuse not to tip someone who's going out of there way to serve you. People are so terrible sometimes.

And on another note, normally people who make jar-tips aren't being paid much hourly, and rely on tips as additional income. I used mine for gas money, or cheap eats, and helped me out greatly. It was always so horrible when I worked a shift and not one person tipped.
