Dinner spots for the weekend - shellfish allergy

Figured I'd go to the collective for help-

Trying to figure out some good dinner spots for the weekend (Sat and Sun); two guys visiting for the weekend, one of which is allergic to shellfish; looking for something informal (i.e. no jackets), but still a sit-down sort of place, preferably close to the French Quarter or train-accessible; something a first-time visitor shouldn't miss, and any price point is fine. Lunch recs also welcome, thanks in advance!

In town on Sunday, by myself

Howdy all,
Was looking for some advice on where to eat this Sunday--

I will be in town for a bachelor party all (extended) weekend from NYC; I will have Sunday all to myself. Would like to know where I can or should have lunch and dinner, considering I:

- will be hung over
- will be by myself
- have never been to Portland before
- would like food or an experience I can't get in NYC (i.e. quintessential Portland)
- don't need a highbrow place (considering I may be broke from 'festivities')
- would like to watch football (but isn't really necessary)
- am a huge burger fanatic
- need to catch a flight leaving PDX at 9:30 (am willing to eat early)

I know that's a lot to ask, but I figure y'all 'hounders can help me out. Thanks in advance!

Sugar Freak Astoria

Has anyone been to Sugar Freak in Astoria? I've read a few comments on Yelp which were positive; still waiting for a place in NYC that can make a proper mufaletta, this may be it...

Local eats in Vegas for Sunday afternoon

I'll be cabbing it. I've checked out the recs y'all have had so far, I definitely want to try Hot & Juicy Crawfish, but it sounds like a recipe for disaster if the next thing I'm doing is hopping on a plane for a redeye. Got any recs for a good burger?

Local eats in Vegas for Sunday afternoon

Howdy all, I'm going to be in Vegas for a Bachelor party this upcoming weekend; after all the debauchery, I have Sunday afternoon to myself before I head back to NYC on a red-eye.

I was wondering if y'all had any recs for a good "must-have" meal before I head back. Nothing fancy or hotel-oriented (I can get all that stuff here in NYC); more along the lines of a diner (with food suggestions), burger joint, taco stand, food truck, or some local great eatery that I'd have a hard time finding something similar outside of Vegas.

It'll be a late flight, so I will have a bit of time on my hands, but I don't want to get out of the city. Oh, and nothing too heavy either, I understand it'll be a million degrees out there...any help is appreciated, thanks!

Vegan-friendly catered lunch in Brooklyn

Howdy folks,
I'm planning on buying my group at work (~30 ppl) lunch on Friday; Usually we end up either getting sandwiches or Grimaldi's, but this time around, we're celebrating a few promotions, and one of the persons is a Vegan.

So, I'm looking for a place in Brooklyn (specifically near Fulton St. Mall / Atlantic Yards / LIU), that I can either pickup or have delivered a lunch with a vegan-friendly option (and of the catered variety, i.e. I'm not putting in 30 indiv. orders). The entire meal doesn't have to be vegan or vegetarian, but as long as the option is there, I'll work it.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

Looking for inexpensive bar / small seafood plates

Good call on the sushi / alcohol issue (In hindsight, I know this from experience). The Dead Poet looks like just the place for us, and I'll keep La Vela in mind--I was also thinking Fatty Crab, after all lip service it's received, here and otherwise..

Looking for inexpensive bar / small seafood plates

Howdy all,
Looking to meet up with a friend Saturday night on either the UWS or anywhere btw 59th and 14th, for some inexpensive drinks; Preferably, I'd like to go to a place near (or in) some sort of restaurant that serves either small plates or apps, primarily seafood and/or vegetarian (she eats no "meat") so that we can also grab a bite as the night goes on.

Any recs would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Fried Chicken around Union Square?

Big Daddy's Diner has a terrific fried chicken blue plate big enough for two. And tater tots.

Midtown at 3 AM

It seems as though after a heavy night of drinking, my friends and I always end up at some variety of diner for some late night noshing, which gets monotonous after awhile.

So, I'm looking for good, NON-diner places to go at 3 AM after a late night of drinking, specifically around midtown (anything between 59th and 14th, really). Any recs would be appreciated, thanks!

Dessert around Union Square

Hope y'all can help me out on this one - one of my coworkers is having a bad day, and I was thinking of faking her out for a mid-afternoon break for a treat (like cupcakes)...we work in Union Square, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good place around here to grab a quick treat.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best fried chicken?

I had the fried chicken at Big Daddy's for lunch today based on your rec, Closer....it was fantastic. Crispy, right amount of spice, and the tater tots were nice and crispy too. And, since it's open 24 hours a day, I'm sure I'll be making a 3 AM stop sometime soon-- I imagine it would be great after a long night of drinking...

Vietnamese coriander (rau ram)

Stokes Farm at the Union Square Greenmarket has Vietnamese coriander (they label it as Vietnamese cilantro). They are at the Greenmarket on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Lounge/Low key food with non-alcoholic drinks

Anywhere midtown and below, and the upper east side. Nothing against the UWS, but it's just rather inconvenient from where we're at. Thanks for the info!

Lounge/Low key food with non-alcoholic drinks

I'm looking for a lounge-ish type place with good food to go with a with a friend of mine that serves non-alcoholic drinks. She's a bit of a foodie, but she's also under 21, and feels a bit awkward when we're out after work for "drinks" and food when all she can order is juice or soda. So, any place with good app-type food and a non-alcoholic drinklist would be great. Any thoughts?

Cheap live lobsters?

I read today on Slate's website that the price of lobster for this season is actually lower than it has been in the past few years (article found at: http://www.slate.com/id/2196990/ ).

Is this true here in Manhattan? I'd like to know if anyone has found cheap live lobster, and can point me to some cheap and tasty crustacean goodness...thanks!

where to buy thai basil in the city?

Won't help you today, but for future reference, the Greenmarket in Union Square usually has a couple of vendors that sell thai basil; Depends on the day you go though, I think Mondays and Fridays are your best bet.

Peter Luger clones

Does anyone have an opinion on Old Homestead or Primehouse? The former seems to get consistently good reviews, and the latter's pretty new, though I don't know how they fare compared to PL's...

Live Dungeness Crab

Does anyone know where I can buy live Dungeness Crab? I grew up in the Seattle-area, and miss this common crustacean creature of the Pacific Northwest.

For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Dungeness Crab is, in my opinion, a much superior crab than those over here on the East Coast. The meat is sweeter, the crab larger, and much more rewarding to eat.

Thanks in advance!

Dinner rec for TriBeCa / Financial District border

Need a bit of help on this one - I have a friend in town staying at the Embassy Suites by the WTC site; we're looking for a place down in that area to have dinner at; he's got his wife and newborn baby with as well, so minimal travel sans car is key; not too expensive, $30 /pp (no alcohol).

I'm totally blanking on what's down there, let alone a "baby friendly" place; oh, and no vietnamese food (we're from Seattle, there's no comparison).

Thanks in advance!

Best New England Clam Chowder

Howdy folks-- So I'm from Boston originally, and recently moved here. Question for y'all - where in the city can the best New England Clam Chowder be had? I've had it at City Crab, and Grand Central Oyster Bar; any other thoughts?

Best Peking Duck in Manhattan?

I was just at PDH on Mott, and I have to say that the place really failed to impress me. My friends and I ordered the Peking Duck Dinner. First off, I believe that Peking Duck should be served on the soft buns, not the flour pancakes (i.e. tortilla).

Second, the appetizer combo was very mediocre - the kind of stuff you can find at any fast food Chinese place, and of the same quality.

Third, not a single one of the four entrees was what I or my friends consider as good Chinese food; the Orange flavored beef was too sweet, the scallops in the Beef and Scallops weren't even cooked together (cooked separately and thrown together before serving, the scallops looked 'nuked), the pork in the green beans and pork was ground pork (not minced meat), and the sauteed prawns w/ginger and scallion sauce tasted like fish.

Although the service was decent, this is definitely 'americanized' Chinese food...and being asian, my friends and I weren't impressed at all. And the fact that even its namesake wasn't as good as other places I've had in Chinatown, I'd definitely recommend against PDH if your Chinese experiences take you beyond the pork fried rice variety.
