Special Occasion Restaurant in Philadelphia

LaCroix?

Wedding Restaurant Help? Focused on the Food!

Estia does really good banquets.

Talula's Garden or a.kitchen?

That's right it was a date pudding. It was really good! Funny you mentioned the pasta. Sure enough it was veal and not short rib pasta (the latter I had at Zavino as it turns out). And our cheese was good to. Our server, who lost points for upselling, gained them back for his suggestion that we try the date pudding.

Talula's Garden or a.kitchen?

I think it was more of the fact that the chef seemed to be trying to incorporate a lot of different things, such as fresh ingredients, into one dish rather than focusing on how good the end result actually tastes. If memory serves me correct we had an excellent short rib pasta app and some kind of gingerbread dessert served in a small jar that were really excellent. But the chef seemed to struggle with things like the snapper entree we had (a special) which was a bit dry and small for the price. The meal itself was not bad by any stretch of the imagination but just not earth shattering.

Talula's Garden or a.kitchen?

I have been to both (and have been to Talulah's since the new chef arrived). I wnet to a.kitchen for brunch. It was good but nothing out of the ordinary sans the homemade english muffin. The space is admittedly pretty tiny there. As far as Talulah's, we went there for dinner in January. It was all pretty good but there seemed to be more focus on presentation over actual taste of most things (like other Starr places), although a few of the dishes were truly very good, including one of the apps and a dessert.

Both places were decent but not like "I gotta return real soon" IMO...

what is best thing to order at percy st bbq?

I have actually had both lean and moist brisket (and also tried the burnt ends one day). The moist is very good but can be a bit fatty given the part of the brisket that it's cut from (the top part I believe). Even the lean is usually quite moist so I tend to stick with that.

The brisket is the way to go. Also make sure to get either the banana cream or the pecan pie.

Dessert scene in Philly?

I actually like the icing myself but I do understand your comment about it being kind of sweet, especially as I am getting older. At least it's not lardy tasting like some I have encountered.

Restaurant with a great bar menu and a Television?

Percy Street BBQ http://percystreet.com/ has a very large TV (and a smaller one at the bar) and very good BBQ. You could probably do a Lockhart for four people (see the menu at Percy St.) if you could do the Mesibah at Zahav (chuckle...)

Reading Terminal Breakfast

As far as biscuits in town go, the drop biscuits at Percy St. BBQ are really good. They are tiny and I think about 4 or 5 of them are served with ham in a platter.

Reading Terminal Breakfast

Cafe Estelle is OK too. I like Kanella and Honey's but find the former to be a bit too salty for my liking.

Reading Terminal Breakfast

Are you asking where to walk, what to eat, or what to do? There are a lot of things going on this weekend in town. Pleanty of good places for lunch and dinner too (despite the fact that a lot of really good places aren't open for lunch on Saturdays).

Oysters

Speaking of Oyster House, I hear they are getting a new chef next week. Hopefully he won't go heavy-handed on the butter like the old one. I had soft shells last week that were served with some other good tasting things but were marred by a oily pool of butter. Yuk!

Reading Terminal Breakfast

DEP is that good (look at a place like Yelp if you don't believe us!) Especially the pancakes and the apple dumplings. I know I will be there for my weekly pilgrimage at 8!

Reading Terminal Breakfast

I'd personally wait the extra hour and go to the Dutch Eating Place myself. I go there on a weekly basis, driving 45 minutes to get there, and see some of the same people eating breakfast there every week.

Square 1682

I ate there a while back and thought it was decent but not enthralling enough that we considered returning. I like how the chef tries to come up with interesting combinations though.

Reading Terminal Breakfast

I actually had the pleasure of having banana pancakes there once. The owner let me bring in my own sliced very ripe bananas on snowy morning over the winter and they cooked them up in the pancakes. Talk about good!

Reading Terminal Breakfast

Beck's also does beignets on Sundays. Perfect for that post-run nourishment.

Reading Terminal Breakfast

The market opens at 8 on Saturdays. The best bet is the pancakes at the Dutch Eating Place with bacon or scrapple.

Where can I find walnuts in the shell?

Try the Head Nut in Ardmore... http://www.theheadnut.com/

Thank you all for the recommendations

Thanks for writing back and glad you had fun (and the lamb!)

Dessert scene in Philly?

Banana Cream Pie report from Percy St. - It's really good.

An individually sized pie with creamy banana filling, a small amount of whipped cream top with a crust that is infused with extremely small pretzel pieces (too small to add any crunch) that give it a great salty taste along the line of sea-salt caramels...

Visiting, love food but have toddler -- your ideas?

If you love lamb and want one of teh best dishes in Philly, pre-order the mesibah at Zahav so you can get the lamb along with the other prix fixe items. It's outstanding. But you have to order it ahead of time.

Also, if you do try Reading Terminal, it's best to visit the first thing in the morning (8 AM) when it opens. Even on most Staurdays it does not really get crowded until after 9 AM and you can enjoy a big pancake breakfast to start your day!

You may want to consider Jones for dinner. Pretty kid-friendly. Also they would probably be ok at Parc (a bistro located across the street from Rittenhouse Park) or at a number of places in Chinatown. Breakfast and lunch would be good at Reading Terminal Market.

Need suggestions for venue near convention center

Reading Terminal Market could accomodate that group if you had it at night.

Dessert scene in Philly?

I like Termini's over Isgro's. Both are good though (unlike Pat's and Geno's...)

Dessert scene in Philly?

If you do go to Termini's, be sure to try their raspberry pound cake. It's delicious! And if you head to Tartes, the molasses cookies and coconut tarts are excellent.

Heading back to Philadelphia, tweaking the agenda.

Yeah...order the lamb at Zahav. If uhockey can down it by himself you will have no problem with two of you!

I'm stumped what Rare is too...

Dessert scene in Philly?

I am not a big fan of the macarons at Miel (I think they are just OK). I think the chocolate brownies are a much better choice at Flying Monkey personally. The budino at Barbuzzo is good but I am more of a chocolate peanut butter pretzel at Mueller's in Reading Terminal person.

The chocolate cake at 4th St Deli? Really?

If you like pecan or key lime pie, Percy St. BBQ has really good ones. They also just added a banana cream one that I have yet to try.

Please critique my itinerary

OK good. The other Talulah is not as good. And you may want to think about pancakes at the Dutch Eating Place at the Market.
