hey some folks like their jobs at Starbucks, my at college is working there to put himself through college! He goes in at 4am and works till noon. That gives him fulltime hours. Then goes to college classes from 1pm on into the night. Tough hours but he's going to graduate with a great degree 'supply chain management'. already has a job waiting for him after graduation with a great international company!

Well, I think I can get the Technivorm, I'd rather not spend the extra money if I don't have to though…but may consider it. Out of curiosity, what do you think about the stainless steel canister compared to the glass carafe. I'm not sure I want the stainless steel, but not sure why to be honest. Maybe I like to see my coffee? The stainless would keep it hot longer I suppose.

So this is where I am now. I started this post to simply inquire about good coffee that I could order. Now I'm at the point where I'm learning about so MUCH more. Pour overs, temperature, grinders, espresso makers…not that I'd never heard of them before, but never have I ventured out thinking I'd need them, nor would want them.
Now my new question would be, since I've been directed to great coffee (fingers crossed) how do I solve this morning need?
3 people, all wanting a good cup of coffee, time constraints (meaning I can't see myself boiling water and doing pour overs for all of us) so the auto drip seems like a good idea?

I could do a pour over for say myself if time was not a big issue.

And how about the espresso part? Is there a decent model maker that would fit the bill? Maybe that's the area where I'd consider the Bialetti.

Ok - wait for it - here's my set up for making a cup of coffee and espresso. zin1953, I hear you laughing from my kitchen. Sigh, I had an auto drip by Krupps. It broke about a month ago. My dear Husband surprised me by taking it upon himself to bring home a new Mr. Coffee auto drip , as he knows how much I love my morning coffee! He said he bought it because he noticed I had a Mr. Coffee espresso maker - which I do. I bought that because it was on sale, I'd never had one and wanted to see if it was easy enough to make my own espresso. I LOVE having an espresso maker. I am going to replace my Mr. Coffee coffeemaker and will likely invest in another espresso maker, just hoped I'd get some good advice here before I go out and spend my $. But I'd be lying if I didn't say they've performed fairly well given their price point. Who knew?

I just left my desk and ran across the street to my espresso coffee bar place that I love dearly...had them make me a 1/2 decaf 1/2 caff espresso with steamed milk, equal ratio's by the way. I've no idea what bean they used, but it's a big ole fancy machine that grinds and they were pressing and steaming my milk, it was grand, especially given that it's freezing outside here on Cape Cod.

ok that's it, I'm packing my bags and moving to your house!!!! I can't wait to take a picture of my setup. I will hear you laughing all the way from your kitchen (smile). I don't hate you at all. so lets get this right. I'm not going to roast my own beans, that's a given, but I should invest in a good grinder right? Take a look at these here, after googling Bi-modal grinders amazon gave me these...am I on the right track?

holy smokes, I am learning so much. Now I need to correctly measure my water per coffee grams. BTW, I have a krupps grinder. How many seconds do you grind your beans? I do 12 seconds for auto drip and 15-18 seconds for espresso beans

Here's another thing I'm hoping. If Redbird is good, well it costs me nothing to ship it and it's roasted right before they ship. I end up spending the same amount as I would at my local coffee supplier or at Starbucks per pound of coffee. So if it's fresher...why wouldn't I go that route?

what do you know about freezing roasted beans that arrive mail order since you say that I should grind them for after 15 days they go stale? Would freezing them help them stay fresh so I can use them longer?

my order was placed with RedBird 2 days ago and is on it's way as we speak. My teenager is thrilled as he thinks all this 'out west' are beyond cool, so coffee coming from Montana MUST be fabulous. I blame Fred Armison from Portlandia for this, along with his one ski trip to Alta.

zin1953 - way to go on the awesome home coffee setup. I'm so impressed! I might just go home and iPhone photo my little so called arrangement and repost here. You will die laughing at what I have for my home brew...
I have 4 kids, turned them all into mini me's with regard to coffee. In fact, my last kiddo is 16, suffers from a little ADD, rather than medicate, I send him off to high school everymorning with his 16 oz to go cup of java. Says it helps wake him up and get started at school. Hey, to all the haters on teenagers drinking coffee, I say go to Colombia, they practically spoon feed it to the toddlers! And they drink coffee at 10 at night in the little squares, we couldn't believe it. There's hardly a decaf to be found (except in Juan Valdez) so those folks are drinking full on caffeine at all hours of the day, we wondered how they ever slept!

Sorry but can you clarify what you're saying? If I understand your last post, if my coffee is ground finer then would there be more coffee grounds per scoop? And if that's correct then espresso is the reason for more caffeine? I'm confused.

lighter roasts have a higher caffeine content? I mostly drink dark, any idea of their caffeine levels? I can have 2 myself and then it has to be decaf after that

I don't know. Those home roasters are kinda pricey. I know mail order is too. But it might just be too much of a hassle for me. I do grind and have an espresso maker, steam my own milk la la la…when folks brag about going off coffee and how good they feel, I feel sad for them, lol

Thanks Everyone! I am a dark roast kinda girl. Interesting that there's a Juan Valdez in NYC. And even more interesting that there weren't more in Colombia. They even had an article about Starbucks going into the Colombian cities - trying to give Juan V a run for his $. If I lived there I'd never go to Stbuks over them, but hey to each his own.
I do get Sumatra and Komodo Dragon and when Peets is on sale I get Major Dickenson's. I'm not as big as fan as I'd hope to be.
As for how much I'd spend. You'd be surprised. I like coffee more than wine. Seriously. So there you go.
Ttrockwood, what do you have in mind?

Went to Colombia for 2 weeks at xmas. Toured the country and bought as much coffee from small roasters/fincas as I could fit in my suitcase. Also hit up the grocery store and bought some Juan Valdez special blends espresso. Had my last of it all today. :(
I'm truly in search of some seriously good coffee beans that I can order/buy that will keep me happy in the am. Small roasters, your roasters, big guys, I don't care, but please, don't recommend 8 o'clock or the Dunkins type stuff.
Hit me up Chowhounders! Where to get the best coffee beans for my morning addiction!
I have to say we drank some fabulous coffee which in the coffee region of Colombia, and while Juan Valdez stores are Starbuck wannabe's, their coffee is better, to me.
