Late Thanksgiving Dinner?

Ours is usually a late lunch (or whenever Grandma says it's time!). My Grandpa, for as long as I can remember, called lunch "dinner" and the evening meal "supper". So, in my family Thanksgiving "dinner" is still lunch.

We have two rules for family dinners: 1. If you come empty handed, you're on kitchen clean up duty (luckily we have that one reliable empty handed relative). 2. Someone must check the fridge after all of the food has been set out buffet style to see if Grandma "forgot" anything. (I think she does this on purpose these days because she knows we think it's funny.)

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)? [old]

I'm a counselor at a maximum security prison. Prison chow is not my favorite, but we do have some ladies assigned to kitchen duty that do a fantastic job. Every now and then I'll get brave enough to have lunch in the dining hall. :)

ETA: I just opened my own small business on the side and occasionally I'll help a friend in her cake shop.

Soups and Stews - an unofficial contest

Last night was White Bean And Chicken Soup from:
http://www.food.com/recipe/white-bean...
Unfortunately, when I got home the electricity was out and it was nearly dark in my kitchen. I lit the emergency lantern, a few candles, and rigged up a Craftsman shop light over the stove so I could see what I was making. Fired up the burners and started cooking. Just as I was serving up dinner, the power was restored! (And only suffered one minor cut to my index finger as I struggled with the manual can opener!)

Favorite Paper Towel?

For my Grandpa it HAD TO BE Viva. I use whatever is cheapest for spills, Viva for smoothing icing on cakes. And, of course, every time I buy a roll of Viva I think of Grandpa and it makes me smile.

It's been a year?

jhopp217, I don't think it's weird not buying ice cream since you've been on your own. Ice cream is one of those things I don't buy either. I love it, and most of the time can make it last a good long while in the freezer. The real reason I don't buy it is because years ago I bought a box of ice cream sandwiches. On the way home (in 98 degree weather) I had major car trouble. So while I was waiting for help to arrive I, uh, rescued my ice cream sandwiches from a wrongful death and ate 4 of them right there on the side of the highway. Not one of my proudest moments, but it would have been a shame for them to just melt away.

Raspberries, Lemonheads and Twinkies Challenge

Hi all! My sister's office is hosting a "CHOPPED" themed food day. Each employee drew ingredients and my sister was lucky enough to get raspberries, lemonhead candy and twinkies. They are going by the rule of the TV show, so she can use a little, or a lot, but must include each ingredient in her dish.

Anyone have any suggestions for her?

Best candy for office

At my previous office I would always buy the huge bag of mixed sweettarts/spree/whatever and pick out only the ones I liked. Those would be hidden away in my desk. The rest went into the candy dish on my desk. Funny how clients would always ask for a piece of candy - and I never once turned them down.

Default Beans?

yes, brown is pinto and white is navy or any other light bean (but not lima beans, those were "butterbeans")

Default Beans?

In my family beans are identified by color. When mom said she was making beans, my sis and I would always ask "Brown or white?" Sis was partial to white and I love brown. In my house they're always brown, served with cornbread and raw onion slices on the side. I'm from Arkansas.

What's For Dinner? #125 [Old]

It's cold and rainy here, so I'm guessing leftover Taco Soup and maybe some corn dog muffins. Excited for both!

What are you baking these days? November 2011, part 1 [old]

Last week it was a police car and a teddy bear. This week, three dozen 1980ish neon cupcakes. (I work part time at a local cake shop btw).

What's for Dinner # 113 [OLD]

it does have chicken (and stock) in it. the recipe i found on food.com called for 3 pounds of chicken though! it's somewhat of a shortcut recipe as you use canned white beans. i just boiled up some boneless skinless chicken breast. once they were done i let them cool a bit then shredded with a couple of forks. I diced up an onion and got it going in my dutch oven with a bit of olive oil. then i threw in what amounted to a couple of cloves of minced garlic and a wee bit of a jalapeno. i let that cook a few minutes until the onions were done enough for me, then added a mix of flour, chili powder, cumin, cayenne and italian seasoning (the recipe called for oregano, but i didnt have any). i let the flour taste cook out and in went the stock (8cups), 3 cans of white beans and the chicken. simmered if for a while and served with avacado.

White bean chicken soup. Had it for the first time this weekend while dog-sitting and now, three days later, I'm craving it! Yum!

MIcrowave Pork Rinds?

Has anyone seen these in stores? They come in a little flat bag ready to be unwrapped and tossed in the microwave, just like microwave popcorn. I haven't tried them yet, as I've gotten mixed reviews from friends that have indulged. Thoughts please. :)

Looonnngggg Slow Cooker Recipes

Does anyone have any great slow cooker recipes that take about 10 hours? From the time I leave for work and (finally) make it back home at the end of the day it's been about that long. I don't like the idea of having my dinner done by noon and just sit there on the counter waiting on me for hours.....Any suggestions?
