Bridal Shower Catering - Mediterranean food - Zand's or Zatar or ???

I just used Zand's in May for about 16 people and it was great! I stopped in the day before and put in my order and it was ready when I got there the next day.

Big hit with the crowd at the party. The platters got a little sloppy looking after the guests dug in but most of the food was gone by the end,

Restaurant near Charlotte airport?

The fried pickles aren't too shabby, either.

Places in Charlotte where you order at the counter

Tijuana Flat, the new place on East (may be a chain?)
Burger Company
Zoes Kitchen

Do buffets count? Bistro La Bon has a new lunch buffet for $10 that looks fantastic.

Catering in East Bay

I can set up and clean up. I just need the food.

Zaki's mentioned above could work but do they deliver? Although I suppose it's pretty close...

Edited in: Is Zaki closed??

Catering in East Bay

Good morning. I am visiting in about a month and would like some help in finding a reasonable catering service for my mom's 85th birthday. I'm open to any kind of food. It can even be a restaurant that delivers. I don't need bartenders or servers, just food and set up. The party location is El Cerrito. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Charlotte's Cowfish coming to Raleigh

I've been to Cowfish (Charlotte) a couple of times and its sister restaurant up north, eeZ, many times. The service is always fantastic, there are great drink specials, and I've never had anything bad. It is lively but it's just that kind of place. eeZ doesn't have the burger concept but it does have many of the same sushi items and it has a stir fry bar where you can choose what you want - meat, sauce, veggies, etc. For about $12, I always have at least one (and sometimes two) lunches leftover.

Soup in the Charlotte Area

Since it's getting colder out, I thought I'd do a survey of soups in our area. What's your favorite?

La Unica in Huntersville might have my favorite soup lately. The Sopa de Tortilla is a large bowl (very large!) of flavorful chicken stock with large chunks of chicken, carrots, celery, tomato, rice, avocado and tortilla chips. At lunch, it's a smaller bowl but served with a cheese quesadilla. Ask for the spicy "green" and the "brown" salsas and you can avoid the drab salsas they normally bring out.

I've mentioned it before but you really must try this soup. You'll try it for lunch or dinner and you'll try it for a couple other meals -- it's that big of a bowl.

Cake in a Hurry

La Farine to the rescue! Thanks for the info. I had no clue that there was a location other than the College Avenue store. It was very well received. I'll try Crixa in December for my parents' 60th wedding anniversary.

Sadly, my party wasn't the brisket fest. But the food was delicious nonetheless.

Cake in a Hurry

I'm coming in to town tonight and just found out that I need to bring a birthdday cake to a BBQ tomorrow. The party is off of Park/Leimert in Oakland.

Can anyone recommend a place around El Cerrito/Albany/Berkeley for me to pick up a ready-made cake that serves 12-14? Is the Virginia Bakery any good? Does FatApples have cakes? I probably know the answer to this but is anything edible at the Safeway bakery?

Being tired and in a time crunch, I'd rather not deal with the hassle of the Berkeley Bowl or anywhere else that's parking challenged/crowded.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Miller & Kaspers Hot Dogs, Gastonia, NC

Wow! I moved to Charlotte from Oakland about 7 years ago and this post brings back a flood of memories. I've eaten hundreds of Kasper's dogs. Ironically I'm headed to Oakland in a few hours but I'll get down to Miller and Kasper when I return -- and I'll report back.

Charlotte Chowhounds

Today's Observer has a big article about the Harvest Moon Grille chef leaving. I wonder what that will mean for that restaurant? Has anyone been there lately? I don't hear much about it on here or in traditional media.

On another note, the article mentions a new place that just opened in Cornelius called Fork. A farm to fork joint with Tim Groody at the helm. I'll try it soon since that's my neck o' the woods.

I can't believe I have been to Customshop. I've always heard it's great but haven't made it there.

131 Main is a reliable standby -- reasonable and a good menu.

La Unica: Fantastic salsas and the best Sopa de Pollo around at the Huntersville location. I think the Central location is closed and I was disappointed in the South Blvd. La Unica. As far as I know, they were owned by different family members so while similar, there were some major differences.

Bistro la Bon, Charlotte

The three left-handed half-Italians met for dinner last night at Bistro la Bon (Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood). We stuffed ourselves with numerous shared plates. I’ll start the discussion and the others can add their comments.

We shared the following: seafood platter, charcuterie plate, cheese plate, crispy avocado and asparagus, lamb belly with mint/arugula puree, brioche bread pudding.

I was very pleased with our meal and especially surprised at how delicious the lamb belly was. The subtle mint flavor complimented the meat perfectly. The charcuterie plate was delicious, the lardo being especially decadent. The seafood platter had a sampling of N.C. trout that was mild but flavorful.

Service was good and prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. I’ve heard really good things about Bistro la Bon’s brunch which is served on Saturday and Sunday. I’ll be back!

Master's Graduation Venue/Restaurant in Charlotte - Suggestions?

Here are a couple of options:

RiRa-upstairs??? Oh wait, someone already recommended that. Upstairs at Aria is nice though I don't believe there's any outdoor space. Wooden Vine Wine Bar on N. Tryon -- you could probably take over the whole place. Rooster's in South Park has a smaller wine area across the atrium from the main restaurant.

Need wedding venue/catering advice - Charlotte, NC

Look into Foundation for the Carolinas too. I was just at a meeting there and it looks like they have some really nice rooms. The room we were in had doors leading to a rooftop patio with views of the city.

Roosters in South Park has a separate wine bar area across from the main restaurant that maybe you can rent out?

Decent food near Concord Mills?

Concord Mills is one of the most depressing places I've ever been to. There is an Indian restaurant across the street from the mall that's decent but I think the OP said nothing spicy.

5Church Uptown Charlotte

I'm looking at a 19 page Press Release from the DNC security people and it looks like street closures on that Sunday start at 9am, mostly around Time Warner Cable Arena. I-77 only closes on Thursday until 2am on Friday. Still, I'd avoid the heck out of the area if I didn't have to be there. The "protest" area is on that side of Uptown and things could spread out to who knows where, even Elizabeth.

2 dinners in Charlotte?

Also in Uptown is Rooster's which features (to copy C-dawg) southern food with a twist and uses lots of locally sourced ingredients. Same owner as King's Kitchen.

Second the rec on Midwood Smokehouse as I am currently addicted to the brisket there.

Good but affordable itallian in charlotte?

I wonder if it's a weird variation of Cincinnati chili (invented by Greeks) which is thin, served over spaghetti and also contains nutmeg!

Where to eat in Charlotte, NC this Tuesday - Saturday

Now, now...you know I'm MUCH too dainty for something that sloppy.

Is the sloppy joe just meat and sauce or is there something else like slaw on it?

Where to eat in Charlotte, NC this Tuesday - Saturday

I tried Queen City Q a week or so ago after work for apps and beer. Nice place, good beer selection, good happy hour appetizer menu. I didnt sample much but the pulled pork tacos ($2 each until 7p) were tasty. There's a large patio in front for good people-watching. And free parking after 5p in the 7th St. Station garage upstairs.

As for that brisket at Midwood, I was at Mac's (Cornelius location) last night for a quick meal and tried their brisket again. It was dry, tough and doused in sauce. It was fairly awful especially after just having had the Midwood version.

mexican food in charlotte?

Is the La Unica out on Wilkinson near 85 still open? (I think it was Wilkinson, but maybe Freedom?) I went there years ago and it was pretty good. Pretty funky though and cash only.

mexican food in charlotte?

Another vote for La Unica but I don't like the South Blvd. location. The salsa isn't like the Central Ave. and Huntersville locations and it doesn't have the world's best chicken soup either. At least not on the lunch menu.

Carnitas Guanajuato is good too.

Where to eat in Charlotte, NC this Tuesday - Saturday

In Uptown Charlotte (which is close to where you're staying) there's Vida, Rooster's, Halcyon, Dandelion Market. Not too far from you is Lulu, Smalls, Midwood Smokehouse.

Speaking of Midwood, I was there for lunch yesterday and had the brisket again. It really is remarkable. Tender with a big, fat smoke ring.

The special yesterday (this week?) was an east vs. west bbq plate with pulled and chopped pork. Both were really good.

Charlotte dinner- fun atmosphere excellent food

There's a Roosters in Uptown (downtown) now too. It meets your criteria of local ingredients and chef + not stuffy. If you choose your wines carefully, you can get out of there within your budget.

Smalls Food and Spirits, Charlotte

I had lunch at Smalls on Elizabeth Ave in Charlotte yesterday and was impressed. The space is stark and fairly small but I liked the look. I don't know if noise would be a factor if all the tables were full but we were the only people eating except a couple at the bar.

Granted this review is based on one visit and a very small food sample but the place has real promise! The menu had a bunch of things I wanted to order. Our very capable server told me that everything but the ketchup is made in house.

My lunch mate and I shared the “Mulled Pear, Arugula, Butternut Crème Fraiche, Roasted Walnuts, Spiced Citrus Vinaigrette” salad ($8.) The pear was stuffed with about a tablespoon of the crème fraiche and acted as a nice compliment to the slightly bitter arugula.

I ordered the “Smalls Steak Burger: House Ground Hanger Steak, Leidys Double Smoked Bacon, Blue Cheese, Amish Potato Roll with Pommes Frites” ($9.) The burger was delicious and cooked perfectly. The roll was soft enough to chew but firm enough to hold the juice from the meat. I’m not sure I’ve had a hanger steak burger before but it works great and you end up with a burger with real beef flavor. The accompanying fries were fabulous, crispy with herbs and grated parmesan on top of the pile.

The beer list features North Carolina brewers. I’m looking forward to trying more from the menu.
