Venice-Florence-Rome: Top 5 casual eats

Just got back from Italy yesterday, and spent some time in Florence and Rome. For casual, I really liked Tonino in Rome and Antica Mescita San Niccolo in Florence. Enjoy! Not exactly casual, but also not at all stuffy - the cacio e pepe (w/ tonnarelli here) at Vine e Camino made me very happy.

Final Roma plans - and questions

could one of you answer two specific questions about lunch?

what time does Da Tonino (Via del Governo Vecchio, 18) start serving lunch? we are thinking of arriving unfashionably early in order to make another appointment.

Is L'asino d'Oro open for lunch on Sunday?

Final Roma plans - and questions

I leave for Italy in 3 days!! Rome is at the end of the trip, but it's the part I've put the most thought and planning into re:food and drink. We have four lunches and three dinners, so I'll just lump my picks so far by meal:

Dinners:
Vino e Camino
Trattoria Cadorna
Cesare or Marco e Fabio in Prati
pizza at Bir & Fud, Ivo, or ???

Lunches:
Lilli
Tonino
Velavevodetto
da Enzo or Gildo or Olindo in Trastevere
Paris

So, my questions: Where do I absolutely need reservations for the meal I've targeted these restaurants for? Is 10 pm too late for Vino e Camino, where I'm planning on Friday night? Any strong feelings about these or similar places I might be missing?

I've done a lot of research, and most of these are planned for times when we'll be in that area of the city, but am still open to some changes. I also have some pizza al taglio, gelato, food shopping, and coffee plans, but those I don't need as much feedback on.

Grazie!

Emilia-Romagna rec's????

Thanks everyone! I will be sure to report in detail when I return. My friends who travel to Italy yearly name Ravenna as their second favorite Italian city (after Rome). Unfortunately for me, they rent an apartment and mostly cook themselves when there.

Emilia-Romagna rec's????

I can't find anything on here for Ravenna!

I am spending three days of my three week trip in Ravenna/Bologna. Hotel in Ravenna, in the center and most interested in the mosaics but also going to Bologna for food shopping and (I hope) tortellini in brodo.

I will be traveling solo for this part of the trip. My only source here is Plotkin, and though I've got the recent edition, I'm concerned how up to date it is.

Any suggestions for dinners in Ravenna or recent stories of lunch in Bologna? Not willing to break the bank here, but could splurge a bit for great renditions of the characteristic dishes (ragu, brodo, piadine?).

Thanks!

Rome feedback - part one

I have gone a little crazy researching food for this trip....end of September, first of October.

Three weeks in Italy, 4+ days in Rome (not necessarily consecutive)

Most of the time I will be with my sister and brother-in-law, who will be making their first trip to Rome (with my future niece or nephew in utero)

Want good food, distinctly Roman, with little to no attitude. I love red wine, but am not picky. My sister can't have it (much). BIL from NOLA, so accustomed to rich food. Prefer inexpensive to moderate budget-wise. Particularly interested in fried goodies, Roman pasta classics, and tasty pizza (al taglio or otherwise). And veggies in season. And lots of gelato (per sister). Coffee and pastries.

We are staying in an apartment (not much of a kitchen) around the corner from the Pantheon, so I'll first ask about restaurants nearby. I think we've got gelato, snacks, and coffee figured out in this area, but appreciate any STRONG votes for something we may not have thought of.

For meals, what do you think of:

Vino e Camino
La Campana
Armando al Pantheon
Trattoria Lilli
Capranica Enoteca e Taverna
Da Baffetto
Da Ugo
Gino
Tonino

We're probably looking at three from this list; two dinners, one lunch. I will be posting later for ideas in other areas where we'll be sightseeing during the day.

Mille grazie!

Thoughts on this Rome Eating Plan.... with room for spontaneity!

vinoroma and others,

could you elaborate on the "many very good pizza al taglio places in the center"?

I'm in Rome end of September and was considering Pizzarium or 00100 but am interested in these other options. Will be with my pregnant sister who insists she will want to eat *a lot* of pizza and may not be keen on traveling far every time.

Thanks!

Florence - so far.

I have done extensive research for my September trip to Italy (Plotkin, Downie, Minchilli, Parla, Chowhound, etc.) but I'm interested in CHounders' thoughts on my ideas so far. I'll do separate posts per city/region.

I only have three days/nights in Florence. I'm interested in coffee, gelato, fiaschetteria/panini/pizza bianco type places, and simple, hearty regional food. Here's what I've got:

Coffee:
Donnini or Gilli, Robiglio, Caffe Italiano

Wine, Snacks, Pastries, Gelato: Da Vinattieri, Procacci, San Lorenzo market, Fiaschetteria Zanobini, Cucciolo, Carabe, Carapina or Carrozza, Geletari Neri

Restaurants: I’Brindellone or Il Guscio, Cammillo, Da Sergio or Trattoria I Due G, Antica Mescita San Niccolo

What about best food shops for oil, truffles, etc.?

What else is missing or should be removed?

Mille grazie!
