Eating along the PCH, highway 1

Radness. Looking forward to Buttermilk Fried Quail at Olema now. I buy lots of cheese from Cowgirl, so we are planning on stopping in and saying hello. Thanks for the other tips as well.

Eating along the PCH, highway 1

Thanks, definitely planning to stop in Tomales bay...And I realized the PCH reference was influenced on my recent years down here in Venice after I posted!

Eating along the PCH, highway 1

I've been told that once or twice... ;)

I am from NorCal and do a pilgrimage once or twice a year, but it has been a very long time since I have stuck to the coast. This trip is all about staying out of the city and closer to the headlands and mountains. Also, being a lifer in the restaurant business I am keen on finding farms, cheese mongers, wineries etc that might be off the radar and wouldn't mind me dropping by for some enthusiastic sampling of their goods...

Heading up to Mendocino and taking the 1 all the way. Looking for recommendations between there Santa Cruz . Really anything delicious and unique, from taco stands to fresh oysters and farmstead fine dining. And anything between the coast and the 101, as we don't have any plans but to eat and eat. Pigs feet and foie to tacos and fries, picnic table to michelin, what are your favorite countryside finds?

Good lunch for Mom and Pop in Venice Beach? Or maybe Main Street in Santa Monica?

Joes is the best deal all around, but your cant beat the price of Lily's $12 2 course daily special.

GOOD CHINESE RESTAURANT IN CULVER CITY?

Hu Szechuan is good for byob orange chicken and the likes. Being from NorCal, I really can't say that there is any good Chinese west of the 5...When there is, it is bound to be a success.

Coolhause Ice Cream Truck

Thanks for the clarification...no twitter for me, thank you...

Best things at Baja Cantina?

Stick with a fishbowl sized margie, and a rosemary chicken quesadailla. Food is pretty bad there...

Coolhause Ice Cream Truck

Met the owners the other day and tried the delicious, custom built to order, ice cream sammies. Not sure if they are twittering like the other trucks, but check them out. She said they will be in Venice at the Brig Saturday afternoon, and then at Venice Beach Wines in the evening. The truck has a pink top a big shiny rims-hard to miss!

Very Specific (Mexican)

Casa Sanchez has great ambiance, ok food...Giant mariachi band is a huge plus, and great patio. Did anyone mention Lares? Only a couple booths, but yummy and strong margies!

Taco truck on rose

They are not there on Thursdays. I'm on my way right now for a chorizo quesadilla...No association with La Playita, as the quality of their campechanas shows.

Shojin (organic and natural Japanese vegan cuisine)

Was going to take parents there tomorrow. Not so great? They have been vegetarian foodies for 30 years, live in NorCal, and just heard if this place. Went to Fattys & Co. last night-menu reads delicious, food was a C+ at best though-oily, sometimes overcooked, sometimes not warm enough, always too garlicky. Our fault though on one dish for even thinking about ordering vegetarian paella I suppose...Any other recs? We are in Venice, but probably going to Pasadena for the day. Cheers all.

Where to buy really good watermelon?

While it is to early this year for truly great melons, Weiser Farms at the Farmers Markets produces wonderful heirloom varieties. But they are coming soon!

Where do you get your hamburger buns?

Easy to make tasty rolls, as Albertsons has a good refrigerated dough...though I forget the name. I like the bun at Baby Blues grilled with butter before building the burger. They get it from Ca' d' Oro on Pico, just east of Lincoln. Not sure if they have them in stock, or if it is a custom order though. Way delicious, and great texture without being to crunchy.

The Freshest EGGS in Los Angeles ...

Shaner's chicks have plenty of roaming outdoors and weeds and bugs. Probably not pastured as well as Joel Salatins in his mobile chicken coop at Polyface farms, but he might be able to direct you to someone in CA that does take it to that extreme. Growing up in NorCal I could drive to a friends for those eggs...A bit different in the SoCal dessert.

The Freshest EGGS in Los Angeles ...

Peter Shaner, on Wednesdays at SM Farmers Market on 2nd north of Arizona. Also turkey eggs, duck eggs. All laid within hours. The richest dark golden yolks ever. LA's finest chefs agree-best in LA.

"Celeb" restaurants for older people

Ivy for lunch is a must for what you are looking for. Always a scene, but still great atmosphere and classic, though not great, menu. Saturdays are teeming with celebs and paparazzi- If they are into US and People they will recognize this patio and go home bragging to their friends.

Tasting menu for birthday w/o breaking the bank?

Hatfields is beyond worth it in my opinion. XIV is also a very good idea-11 courses for $75. I am going to have the full menu in a couple weeks-can't wait.
