New 'Menu Items That Need to Be Retired", 2012 edition...

I agree. There is a brewpub near me that uses the "farm to table" label to jack up the prices on their food - $8 for a small cheese panini and some house made potato chips.

Really got a laugh the day they were doing coffee and stout drinks made with coffee from a local roaster and one of the employees shows up with a tray of Starbucks drinks for the staff. BTW, the Starbucks is further from the brewpub than the local coffee roaster...

Faux Poutine and Other Foods We Hate

Gotta agree on the sweet potato fries - the first place I ever had them was a little hole-in-the-wall burger place that cut their own and seasoned them with cinnamon and they were the best thing ever. Now everyone is selling those damn frozen ones coated in flour and they are just nasty. Is is really that hard to cut your own fries?

Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?

My mom used to bring home day-old plain doughnuts from the hospital she worked at and she would butter them, sprinkle 'em with cinnamon sugar and then toast 'em in the toaster over - so tasty! Grandma used to make these odd little cornbread snacks in a sandwich maker (the kind that seals the edges). She would mix up a batch of Jiffy cornbread mix and add cut up hot dogs, then pour it in the sandwich maker and cook 'em up. Miss those two things so much!

What is your "go to" meal when there is too much month left at the end of the paycheque - past or present

Chilaquiles. Corn tortillas and eggs are cheap, I usually have some salsa in the fridge that I can use as sauce and then just grate a little cheese on top. I used to eat pan fried potatoes a lot too when I was broke - I'd watch for 10 lb bags to go on sale for a buck, fry some up then add just a bit of grated cheese and some cut up kielbasa.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]

I really miss the Mexican Hot Cocoa cookies, I think they only had them one Christmas and they never came back... Also, a real "blast from the past" - the Sundried Tomato Bread. That bread made the BEST grilled cheese sandwiches! The Sundried Tomato Seasoning was a fixture in my pesto pasta salad; they had that for years before it suddenly bit the dust. Oh, and my most recent sadness is the loss of the Blue Granite blue veined jack cheese, I have to buy a similar cheese at Sprouts now.

what are your favorite places on (or off) adams ave?

I have heard good things about their cocktails but I go there for the beer, great selection and not as crowded as Hamilton's.

For weekend breakfast I love the brunch at Small Bar, it's on Park near Adams. $15 gets you a good sized plate of food and a drink (the choices are French 75, Mimosa, Michelada, Bloody Mary, or draught beer). Their "beer for breakfast" special days are always interesting, check their website under events for more info.

San Diego CLOSED Restaurants - Replacement for old board.

It was down on Garnet near Mission in that weird complex on the corner that now houses a Sketchers shoe outlet and the timeframe was, if I recall correctly, the early to mid 90's. They did an all spicy food menu and I think their big downfall was not having a beer and wine sales license, as well as being ahead of the whole chipotle flavor craze.

Food Love..what's yours in SD?

Hell, I love sadwiches. Call me white trash if you want, but here's what I consider the best in SD:
Bratburger at Coronado Brewing Company
Cheesy Beef on Garlic Bread at Lefty's Chicago Style
Yardbird at Station Tavern and Burgers
Black and Bleu Burger at Bitchin' Burgers foodtruck

I know this goes WAY back in time - but does anyone remember Hell's Kitchen in PB? I seriously want to cry every time I think about that place - we used to go all the time and loved their food. I think they were just 10-20 years ahead of their time...

BYO Backyard BBQ... "Bring something to throw on the grill and we'll see you at 7"

When we have get-togethers I will provide some meat (generally hamburgers or bratwursts) but ask people to bring a side dish. I have a lot of friends with dietary restrictions so I don't feel bad suggesting they bring things they can/want to eat, so they are welcome to bring tofu, chicken, or whatever it is that fits their restricted diet... I dunno, I just don't think of it as rude when it comes to a casual bbq. Now, a formal dinner party would be a different animal all together!
