Afghan Grill - North Dallas

Sorry, duplicate and I can't figure out how to remove it.

Afghan Grill - North Dallas

We've been there 3 or 4 times in the last year and LOVE it! Between all the people we've gone with, we've hit them with just about every special diet or request. They've always been accommodating. We haven't gone during buffet hours and have only ordered off the menu. The only thing that keeps us from going more often is the price.

Friends have gotten the beef, chicken, and lamb kabobs and all were pleased. I don't remember the other meals they've ordered, but there hasn't been a complaint among them. I've had the veggie plate each time. I love the kadu buranee (which I get w/o the meat sauce) and even liked the spinach (which is amazing b/c I don't like greens). We also get the pita and hummus, which is well loved.

My only surprise was that a green salad with iceberg lettuce is the norm unless you specify otherwise. I definitely prefer the other salads and make sure to specify which I want.

The firnee (custard with pistachios) is yummy and the bastani (cardamom and rose water ice cream with pistachios) is amazing! They're both $3, as is the baklava now. I'd order some coffee and bastani alone if I had to be frugal with my money when visiting. They have evening music and belly dancing on occasion, though we've not been at night. Their website is hard to find on searches. It is http://www.afghangrilltx.com/

Dream Cafe has a children's play area outside and a healthy, global cuisine.
I also have had good luck with Trinity Hall for years in getting kid-friendly dishes, but had a bad experience a few weeks back with a waitress who was far less than helpful and the owner never stopping by. Their niche-like set up makes having little people around hardly noticeable, though, and the food is fabulous.

Here are some I haven't tried that Guidelive recommends as being family-friendly and good food. Maybe others could give their experiences there?

Farmers Market in Plano, TX

I don't know how to get into one but have seen emails frequently pass through from friends about them. They usually have a central drop-off location like a church. I did a Google search and found this: http://www.dfwnetmall.com/veg/coop.htm

It wouldn't hurt to check it out or to ask around. If you make acquaintances who drink raw milk or otherwise seem to eat a crunchy diet, ask about local co-ops. They are most likely to know.

Best falafel in Dallas? Saffron rice?

Thanks, M. I'll give them a try.

Russian food in DFW?

Royal Sweets is great!

When we've gone, the owner has been extremely attentive. She's entertained the little one with books and a tour of the restaurant. She had whatever we needed taken care of and she was very accommodating about allergies as well. I can't recommend her enough!

We thought it might have been closed because the lights weren't on when we arrived during the day. She was there and so was the delicious food. The cakes were so yummy we wanted one of all of them! She's also had several customers come in to purchase a bag of frozen pierogies to go while we were there.

And she teaches Russian cooking classes! She said she has children's classes, but I'd be willing to wager she'd work with an adult as well.

Definitely give her a try.

Best falafel in Dallas? Saffron rice?

We've only tried Jasmine Cafe in Richardson and really like their falafel sandwiches. Do you have any other suggestions? Also, where can I get some good saffron rice?

Indian Fry Bread

I bought a box mix made by Woodenknife at either Whole Foods or Central Market.

Plano Bangkok City remodeling--know anything?

We've loved this place and thought it was going to break the bad luck chain that restaurants occupying that space seem to have. The other night we went to call in an order and kept getting a busy signal. When we went, they had a sign out saying they were remodeling. Anyone know anything about it?

vegetarian/chain free in plano?

Dream Cafe is also veggie-friendly.

On Tue evening they have 1/2 price entrees, Wed is 1/2 price bottles of wine, Thur has live music, and M-F 3-5:30 is 1/2 off appetizers and wine.

Farmers Market in Plano, TX

Georgia's has a lot of big brand produce (like Dole), but they also have fresh and in-season TX produce like peaches or nuts or what-have-you. They shouldn't, but they require a $5 or larger purchase to swipe a debit or credit card, FYI. They also have Dublin Dr Pepper, loose leaf tea, roasted peanuts, and other such goodies for such a small place.

The McKinney Farmer's Market is supposed to be pretty good. I like the Dallas one, too. They are currently trying to woo back more of the local and regional farmers, but a number of the stalls have local produce sold by middlemen. I would recommend it. There are also a number of local veggie co-ops that might interest you.

What did we do wrong? Both kids are vegetarians!

I've seen a variety of responses, but it seems the unifying theme is when the hosting meat-eaters respect the decisions of the vegetarians (even if they don't agree) and the two try to work out a compromise that takes into concern the physical and emotional health of the other, then the parties involved are happy.

Feed them emotionally and the physical food on the table won't matter nearly as much.
