looking for laid back diner/cafe in Park Slope near 4th Ave The owners of Bar Toto and Provini have a nice looking spot at the corner of 9th street and 3rd ave, just a block from the subway (F,G,R). ----- Bar Tano Provini |

more Brooklyn Fairway disappointment Luckily I make my own seltzer at home. It's a joy. And for someone who loves her seltzer, no more recycling! |

more Brooklyn Fairway disappointment I have been shopping at the RH Fairway for only a few years and admittedly wasn't going for the cheese section so can't really report there. Over all I love it. I'll take it over C-Town any day. I do happen to only go once every couple months, with my other shopping being korean bodegas, Union Market, and Trader Joe's. What I enjoy about Fairway- lunch out on the water (though my beloved lobster roll has been skimpy lately), their Fairway smoked salmon is like buttah, one stop shopping in general, somewhat decent organic packaged foods section, the olive/pickle bar, they stopped carrying Sonny and Joe's chummus for positive political reasons (Sonny and Joe's wasn't paying employees among other issues). I used to be more excited about their meat section (they *do* have great sales on USDA prime sometimes) but lately have been cooking way less meat so I rarely even look anymore. The fish section requires savviness. They have tilapia from China but also local wild fish from NY. It takes thinking outside the box and eating lesser known varieties to see that they do sometimes carry good fresh fish. Things I do not enjoy...their smoked salmon has gone up in price and it was already really expensive, the organic produce section is pathetic and shoved in the corner like a disobedient child, they stopped putting out coupons for $10 off $100s or more (which I used to put towards a $10 car ride home). I always make sure to hit up their sales and check their online circular before going, making sure the trip will be worth it. I do wish they would up the ante with organics and local food. ----- |

I like H&H and yes, Bagel Hole in Park Slope is also great. But I have to say, and I never thought I would be saying this, the best bagels I have had in the NY area, because technically it's not NY, is at Bagelwich in Verona, New Jersey. Hands down. |

Sorry for the late response. We actually wound up eating on Smith Street. Dumbo didn't happen. Thank you for the suggestion though! |
|
|
Gotchya, thank you. So you are or you are not recommending the Dumbo General Store? :) Sorry for my confused state :) |
|

What does ETA mean? Estimated Time of Arrival?? :) |

Looking for lunch this Wednesday in Dumbo. I live in Brooklyn but don't know that hood very well. Any suggestions? Looking to not break the bank but not go for cheap burritos either. Some place with a yummy menu (pardon being vague) and where my cousin can get a glass of wine. We'll be heading there around 2:00. We both *try* to eat healthfully when possible so while we're not aiming for a bowl full of lettuce I think we're also not aiming for just pizza. Thanks for the feedback and ideas! :) |

I personally really love the joint but I could see how it could go wrong for some people. In my experience, the best dishes were not the mains. Actually. I had an unforgettable pork chop there a couple years ago. Sidenote: I have heard great things about Convivium Osteria so I hope to dine there sometime soon :) ----- |

Without even reading what other people have posted here I will say that no, it is NOT worth going to Coney Island. I live in Brooklyn off the F train which is what you can take to get out to CI and after having been twice last summer (a concert and a cyclones game) I was so grossed out by the overall scene and had my fill for a very long time. Honestly, you can get a Nathan's hotdog anywhere and for pizza you should really head to Difara's in Midwood. The best. The subway ride out to CI isnt really so terrible it just simply isn't worth it. It's so gross out there. It smells, it's dirty, and the old novelty and charm sadly has faded into this depressed state. Yukky. |

I was just in Boston for one night this weekend and went to Neptune today for late lunch. Especially because the place is tiny, it was packed but because it was 2:30, a lull in the afternoon, we got a seat right away. Fried Ipswich clams we ordered but could have done without. At $19 we were expecting something more memorable but perhaps it was due to the nature of the small clams? I think if they were larger clams it would have made for a better batch of fried clams. They just werent clammy enough. So be it, glad we tried them. Goes to show how much we know about different varieties of clams. The lobster roll we had was to die for- decadence through and through. We got the hot lobster roll which was warm meat, no mayo, but rather drenched in butter. Usually i find $25 to be a little bit steep for a lobster roll but this one was so jam packed with meat it was worth it. Glad hubby and I split it because the butter was a little overwhelming *and* it came with fries (but who are we kidding, it was all about the lobster). I highly recommend this place- parking in the area is tough (but we eventually found a free spot) but this place didn't have a crazy touristy trap vibe and the lobster roll was ridiculous. |

Yummy suggestion for Mom's bday? Yeah I have read similar reviews. We'll be ok though. She doesnt require anything too fancy. She's pretty easy to please. I think she will appreciate the follow up of walking in the park. |

Yummy suggestion for Mom's bday? I think we're going to try Bouchon Bakery in the Time Warner building. I hear its a little tight in there but it has grilled cheese and tomato soup which she loves- plus an array of other salads and such. Then we can walk around the Time Warner building (which I could care less about but she would love) and walk with iced coffees into the park. ----- |

Yummy suggestion for Mom's bday? Thanks, menu looks yummy. Not sure there's enough there for her though. She doesnt eat shellfish either lol :) I on the other hand eat it all :) |

Yummy suggestion for Mom's bday? I should also mention she doesnt eat meat. She eats fish, no meat. |

Yummy suggestion for Mom's bday? I'm taking my mom out for lunch on Friday- she is coming into Grand Central from CT, I'll be meeting here there from Park Slope. The place doesnt have to be fancy but should be somewhere with a variety on the menu- salads, sandwiches, entrees. We dont need to stay around Grand Central because we'll take the train wherever but I dont want it to be too big of a haul transferring and whatnot. If you have a favorite place you like, a cute little bistro lunch spot or cafe thats been around forever, I would love to hear about it. Thanks! |

Kosher bakeries near DiFara (Isaac's) I personally do not like all those expensive, not so amazing Ashkenazi bakeries....try Pita Sababa for some really yummy Syrian pastries. They have the BEST fresh pita, amazing chummus and various salads in their fridge, delish little cookies and really really yummy baklava in every shape and form. Its not right by Difaras- its at 540 Kings Highway but its so much better IMO than the Midwood Ashkenazi brethren. ----- |

GOOD Jewish Bakery in Brooklyn??? I cant bare to read through every one of the responses here, but, if you can make it out to Long Island, Long Beach to be specific, I remember from my youth, Country Boy Bakery to have some amazing onion rolls. Maybe make a day out of it and continue on out to the beach. |

Best Cheap Eats and Happy Hours? In town for 2 days. Do you think I need suggestions or can I can peruse the market and find a spot not too touristy? I just dont want to walk around there and fall into a tourist food trap you know? We might also want to seek out a good spot to sit and eat crabs- suggestions? We're thinking bib and hammer style. |

Red Hook Ball Fields Latino Food Here is a map for you....you have to zoom in http://gis.nyc.gov/parks/lc/NYCParkMapIt.do;jsessionid=63B98C77D7729971E79C68340851261D Last summer, the soccer fields were zilch. There was nothing but a few vendors out on the road. I did however get to experience the vendors the year *before* that and thank god because yes, its amazing. I feel lucky that I got in on the action when there were talks of the vendors possibly being no more. Apparently a 6 year contract- woohoo! Give yourself the entire day. And plan to wait on very long lines for food. Its worth it though. |

Moving to Stamford CT. Where to eat? Just found this post- wow, long time. For me though, fancy decor and a candelit table doesnt make up for crappy sushi. I'm a sashimi eater so I'm not always able to accept sushi as good when its covered up with sweet sauces (which of course I can also love) I still stand by Kiku. |

Ohhh, snap from KT. Maybe I'll forget Dim Sum altogether and keep it simple with some roast duck. Mm. |
