Burgers in Pasadena.
Hee hee silence9 I am right there with you. I love Pie 'N Burger and no one will ever convince me it isn't the best burger in the Universe and I thank my lucky stars I get to live in the same town as this magical place. Either there is a chorus of angels working the grill or Mike Osborne made a deal with the devil, I'm not sure which. It is the perfect burger.
Great Burger and Beers - Glendale/Pas/Burb Area
Eeeeew. Yes, by all means go to B.C. if you want a side order of nasty.
Pie N Burger for great burgers -- I imagine you can get a beer there if you really want.
If the beer and atmosphere is more important than the burger, then try Crown City Brewery or Lucky Baldwins or Yardhouse.

What is your faorite recipe for stuffed cabbage?
I heard mention recently about a cabbage roll dish with a different sort of sauce -- a lemon/cream sauce rather than the tomato version. Anyone know of one? I'm not so keen on the combination of tomatoes and cabbage, but a lemon sauce sounds lovely and rather bavarian/scandanavian.
my beef with President Thai
I also prefer PresidenTwo to President Thai...although you can't get everything from the President Thai menu at the satellite location, such as Chinese broccoli with crispy pork (so good).
I just find the emphasis is more on the clean pure tastes and simply great food at PresidenTwo, while going to President Thai is always an involved affair where I have to specify a lot more about the dishes to have them come out to my liking. They always seem a little too busy to take my order seriously, unless I make it very clear how much I care about each dish. I hate to be picky, so it makes the experience a lot less pleasant for me.
Do L.A. ex-pats to other cities ....
Bwah! I burst out with the same thing when I watched that episode of House. Especially since I spent 5 years in Princeton and was completely disgusted with the lack of decent Mexican food. I remember having to spend upwards of $20 for a barely passable carne asada dinner that costs me $4 here...finally I learned to cook Mexican food in desperation before I could move back to my beloved L.A.
A tiny bunch of old cilantro cost $1.99 there. Ugh. It helped when a TJs opened about an hour away from Princeton, but I complained bitterly (to myself) almost every day I was there. The food was heavy, rich, underspiced, and the produce was limp, unless you went to great lengths and expense to get better. The people who lived there simply had no idea there was anything different out there.
Fiore yogurt in Little Tokyo (Pinkberry?!)
I tried the shaved ice/3 fruits (I picked honeydew, watermelon, and raspberry) with yogurt on top and it was SO good and refreshing on a hot day. The raspberries had that special garden flavour that is completely missing in most commercially available berries. The staff were very sweet and complimented me on my choice of fruit. I can't wait to go back.
Breakfast rec in Pasadena
I would give a negative review to Fox's breakfast. I wanted to like this place but it was crowded and my food was cold and lower quality than I would buy in my local grocery store. As in really cheap bread and very poor quality eggs.
Pie 'N Burger has good breakfasts, is kid-friendly (I think they would like the novelty of sitting at the counter), but can have a bit of a wait some mornings. Homemade bread, thin pancakes, thick bacon, goopy cinnamon or pecan rolls, etc.
Galco's Soda Store
We love this place -- every time we go, the owner pops by to offer assistance, and he really knows his stuff (and is just plain nice as pie). He has the makings for "Berliner Kindl Weisse," a very low-alcohol German beer that is mixed with raspberry syrup, delicious and impossible to find.
Don't forget the aisle of hard-to-find candies.
"the great stripmall in the sky" - reincarnated restaurants and resurrected dishes
The Cobb Salad from the Brown Derby. Now only exists at the replica Brown Derby in MGM Studios in Walt Disney World, in Orlando, Florida.
Sigh. I think about it often.
I don't suppose anyone knows of another excellent Cobb salad that is here in L.A.? The key here is that everything is very fresh and VERY VERY VERY finely diced/chopped/shredded/pulverized.
ISO crunchy shell shredded chicken tacos
I get mine at Burrito Express -- but I like the machaca more. Their homemade shells are great, and make sure to ask for a side of peppery red hot sauce.
