The Ten Best Things To Eat In LA Right Now

In No particular order, some may be cliche, also maybe not the best things, but my favorite, some have been mentioned. I have lived in Hong Kong for the past two years, but was born and raised in LA, and these are the things I need to eat when I come home:

Dal Rae Caesar Salad
Lou on Vine Pig Candy
Madeo Calamari Affogati
Nanbankan Tsukune
Sushi Zo Blue Crab Handroll
Jar Creamed Corn
Hollywood Farmer's Market Green Corn Tamale with tomatillo Sauce
Hatfield's Croque Madame
Kogi Black Jack Quesadilla
Marouch Quail with Garlic Sauce

I've got a bunch of others, but these are the things that I find myself craving, completely miss, and that you can't get out of LA.

The Dal Rae Caesar is amazing. I agree. Best caesar in So Cal. Their banana's foster prepared table side is also fantastic!

Marino Italian Restaurant. Any opinions?

We went to Marino's 2 nights ago, and it was absolutely wonderful. I may be vilified for this, but we were given the choice of Osteria Mozza, Madeo, Angelini, or Marino's and both my husband and I independently chose to go to Marino's. It is one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles for authentic family Italian. Mario, the eldest son has recently taken it over, revitalized it, and the food is better then ever. The service is so wonderful, and they are willing to make anything to your specifications. We had a plate of clams oreganata that was to die for. A wonderful light caesar salad, and some mixed antipasto. As one in our party has some food restrictions, they were able to make him a Spicy Veal with Peppers according to his restrictions, and it tasted unbelievable. I had the Bucatini Amatriciana, and was literally licking the plate afterwards. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough.

Hello Everyone!
We are going to be staying at dromoland castle for 4 nights and don't want to eat at the hotel every night. Does anyone have any great restaurant recs for that area? We eat everything, and aren't only looking for traditional Irish fare.

Mama's Lu Dumpling House with Pics

Replying to the original post, not the lengthy discussion on what XLB is, ect. We are going for the first time in CA for soup dumplings this weekend. We were going to try Mei Long, given the complaints that DTF's skin in too thin, and J&J has gone downhill. Mike's pictures from Mama's actually look like the soup dumplings we used to eat when we lived in China (or at least more like them that the pics of DTF's). Should we venture here instead of Mei Long? Also, I assume we should try to show up exactly at 10am, or a little before if we are bring 2 2-year olds with us? There will be a total of 8 people - will we have a problem getting a table for that many?
Thank You in advance.

Rec for Dinner near the DGA

Specifics are: 10pm movie, so we don't need to worry about rushing through dinner. Don't mind driving, but I think the Beverly restaurants are too far. I was thinking about Animal, but we were there about 2 weeks ago, so was thinking about other alternatives. Comme Ca is a good idea, maybe Chameu? We have been to Street 4 times, and I am done with the restaurant. The food is way too greasy (with the exception of the coconut jam sandwich and the amazing chicken curry).

BLT Steak...what to get?

We went to BLT on Saturday. The chicken liver and popovers are certainly standouts. The octopus and tuna tartare was also wonderful. Here was the problem: we ordered the porterhouse and it was so extremely oversalted that I literally had to have 4 glasses of water when I got home, and still woke up in the morning with the feeling like a had a saltlick for dinner the night before. The sides were quite unappealing, and we ordered a lot of them: potato gratin, french fries, stuffed mushrooms, creamed spinach, stuffed zucchini blossoms (these were quite good), and the english peas. I was quite unimpressed and disappineted with the meal.

Rec for Dinner near the DGA

Anyone have a recommendation for a good place to go to dinner before a movie at the DGA? My mind has gone blank, and wanted to go to some place with good food. That is the only prerec - any cuisine is good for me, but since it is a night out without the toddler, I do want some quality!

Thank You!

SACRILEGE: I don't actually enjoy the Hollywood FM.

I do agree with you about the overcrowding and the high prices, but I have yet to go to a market that has the variety of not only produce but prepared food as well. The pupusas, chicken sticks, flan king, samosas, tamales, etc. all make it worth braving the crowds. That being said, is the produce considerably less at the Studio City farmer's market? The Larchmont market on Sundays is pretty much a joke.

Corkage Policy at Sushi Zo

We had a wonderful meal there! Had everything from Kevin's post (except for the needlefish - he didn't have any that night). We ate everything he had along with a 2nd helping of the uni and ikura! He was incredibly pleasant and gracious. We spoke about his 3 year old daughter and our 2 year old son. His face just lit up while speaking about her. Based on Kevin's previous post we ordered 2 different kinds of live sake, both wonderful. It was an outstanding anniversary meal! Not urasawa, but we used our once a year pass on my birthday, so we will just have to wait until december to return there! Thank you for all your guidance.

Should I request specific things I have seen reviewed, or just let him know that we eat anything and everything and price is no object? Also, what is best to order to drink there?

Corkage Policy at Sushi Zo

We are going to Sushi Zo tonight for our anniversary, and I would like to bring a bottle of Dom with us. We have never brought wine, or alcohol there before. The last thing we want to do is upset Keizo, so some guidance would be much appreciated. I was also wondering if there is a special omakase that needs to be requested or if he just prepares the same thing for everyone. At Sasubune they have the "Japanese" omakase that can be requested with the more adventurous items. We have been before, but didn't get 1/2 of the items that we saw on the Kevin Eats blog. Price is not an issue.

Thank You!!

I need to find fresh ricotta (that will then be drained for 24 hours) for a recipe. Where can I find high quality fresh ricotta to make gnocchi in LA? I live in the Hancock Park area, but will travel as far west as Santa Monica if necessary.

Hello Everyone,

Going to Cecconi's West Hollywood tonight for dinner. I would love some recommendations for what to order. This is what the chow recs have said so far:

Any of these standouts? Anything to stay away from? What about the pizzas? Please help! We are going here so I don't need recommendations for other restaurants in its place.
