Tamales in San Fernando Valley

We love California Tamale House on the corner of Nordhoff and Sepulveda. They have at least ten kinds of tamales at any given time, and they're consistently good.

Jacobellis’ Italian Sausage - Info?

It's very good. Don't know if they sell it to the public or not, but you can get it at Italian joints in Burbank. Ask around.

Vegetarian in/near Chatsworth?

Vegetable Delight on Chatsworth near Zelzah is strictly vegetarian Chinese, and usually pretty darn good. Woodlands indian on Lassen and Topanga is vegetarian and consistently good.

Sharon Fruit in LA?

"sharon fruit" is another name for persimmons. fuyu persimmons are the ones you are referring to (as opposed to hachiya persimmons, which are the longer ones that we eat only when very soft). fuyu persimmons are all over the place when in season, which is right about now. they grow here. try 99 ranch, gelsons, trader joes, whole foods, actually just about anywhere. ask for fuyu persimmons. they really are widely available in southern california.

It's LA County Fair Time...

The churros in front of the racetrack entrance are freshly made and delicious. Ask for the "bag" and you will get a bunch of short churro chunks.

New to SFV, where should I eat?!

Yes, California Chicken is a great place for a quick lunch or dinner. The food is consistent and fresh and mostly delicious. The cabbage salad is awesome, and the wraps are surprisingly yummy. The place is always busy no matter when you go. I've been meaning to try Weinie Bakery for a long time. The name has always gotten in the way ; )

no, it wasn't tart at all. it was delicate, creamy, like a nice panna cotta. and the crust is magic.

I used Labne. Oh, just thinking about it makes me happy! We live in an area with lots of armenian markets, so we buy labne and use it like cream cheese.

We've done well at Sushi Spot, at the corner of Corbin and Ventura.

May/June 2008 Dessert COTM: PURE DESSERT - All Recipes

The labne tart is one of the best desserts I've made in a long time. The overall impression is of a super-delicate, super-elegant tart, in spite of yogurt's sometimes in-your-face quality. And the crust is special. I could see that if one were to overcook this tart it wouldn't be so splendid.

The kamut poundcake was also great. I added dried sour cherries and used kirsch as a flavoring. It got gobbled down, including a few slices toasted with butter.

The buckwheat cocoa-nib cookies were strange on the day they were cooked, but tremendous the next day. Turned me into a cocoa nib abuser!

Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!

What place has better (or the same) profit margin as pizza? Any place that sells soda; wine, beer, hard alcohol; foods paired with bread, rice, tortillas, beans, potatoes, pasta, or vegetables; soups; basic salads; baked goods. Any place that serves expensive proteins paired with starches and vegetables at a high price. Any place that serves cheap proteins paired with starches and vegetables at a low price.

Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!

cheese alone costs more than a buck on a large pizza. then there are toppings, and sauce, and dough, and labor, and insurance, and rent, and supplies and a hundred other things. if we are talking strictly margins there are a lot better businesses to be in.

a restaurant is around a long time if they make a product that is worth the price they charge and if their landlord doesn't kick them out, and if a thousand other things go right.

if what you wrote were true, there would be nothing but pizza places out there!

Moist but not dense chocolate cake recipe?

Hi there ... I'm Janine too. We used to make a cake called "30 minute cake," that I've seen others call "Texas sheet cake." It's basically a cocoa cake with buttermilk. Very light and very flavorful and moist. I don't have my recipe but this one looks very similar.

Great night at Yujean Kang's

I love it. I'm not sure you're going to find a lot of Yujean Kang admirers around Chowhound anymore. Can't say why. The food is as good as ever to me.

The polenta and the eggplant make me very happy.

Ultimate Los Angeles Restaurants 2008: The Poll Results [LONG]

Thanks for the great work. A question: how did you decide which restaurants to drop from the list? If a restaurant received only one vote, did you drop it? I noticed a few that were not included in the results.

SFV Holiday party room for 20+, good food

Greetings- I'd like to feed 20+ employees a nice holiday dinner somewhere in the east or middle san fernando valley. The criteria are: good food, a private room (cause we make noise!), and up to about $45 per person including a drink or two per person.

The chain restaurants are happy to do it at my price, but I think my employees are worth more than that! There must be a decent place that will do it! Any ideas?

Problem with noodle kugel (pudding)

Hmm. Doesn't make a lot of sense. It ought to bind up. I think that the cooking longer thing is a good suggestion. But I would be reluctant to cover it for too long. That would contribute to wetness I would think. Also, are your noodles cooked too long or something? Maybe making them a bit more al dente would let them take up more during cooking? A mystery. Wish I had the answer.

I make mine with dairy. Just like yours but with sour cream and cottage cheese too, and this year I made it with pineapple and raisins.

Stealing Bar Glasses

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that stealing from a restaurant is ...exactly the same as stealing from anyone else. I own a restaurant. You steal my glasses, it's exactly the same thing as reaching into my pocket and taking two bucks. I notice someone up there has her good glassware packed away and uses her stolen barware instead. Would she feel okay if someone stole her good stuff? After all, she didn't pay for it!

People forget that restaurants are owned by...human beings.
