Healthy School Snacks for 30 Preschoolers

Hi Chowhounders!

I need your help in a major way! My 4 year old daughter starts her firsr day of school tomorrow. I learned tonight at the first parents' meeting that we as parents are responsible for bringing in a healthy snack for 30 kids once a month. We are supposed to bring something that does not contain peanuts or peanut butter due to the high incidence of peanut allergies. Also, sugary snacks are not encohraged. We are also supposed to bring a complimentary beverage for all 30 of the kids, either water, milk, or 100% juice. Given these instructions and this scenario, what would you bring in?

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Best of Palm Beach on a Budget

Thank you so much for the information, freakerdude! It is amazing to me that the Palm Beach area does not seem to be the subject of many threads on Chowhound. Why is that?

Oh, I was also thinking that I could use some recommendations for diners, coffee shops, sandwich shops/delis, and other places that are Chowhound worthy. Also, are there any great places for take-out in this area?

Thanks again!!!

Winterizing My Herbs

You are absolutely right! I shouldn't get so attached to my plants! Sometimes, I feel like I care about them almost as much as my pets!!! LOL

Winterizing My Herbs

Oh. no. sr44... Your response was very clear! I was just thinking out loud in my respose, if you can understand! I guess that I am not sure, yet, what is the best thing to do for my herbs.

Thank you for your advice! I really appreciate that you are sharing your knowledge with me! :)

Best of Palm Beach on a Budget

I am looking for anything spectacular within the Palm Beach area. They are going to be staying at their friends' extra house which is in the same gated community as Rush Limbaugh, They do not have to be on a budget, but they cannot sit and dine for too long of a time due to orthopedic issues. They would be open to any level of cuisine, but I would like to give them a list that the locals would be consider to be "do not miss" type places... I hope that helps!!!

Winterizing My Herbs

Thanks for the advice, sr44. My rosemary plant is pretty spectacular, even now, so I do not want to lose it! I am wondering what all my options are with my herbs. I need to decide soon before the first frost comes. I do not own a grow light, and I would not even know where to get one nor which one to get, etc. I am hoping that I will gain some much needed knowledge from this board!

I could put the herbs in our garage, but there would not be enough sun exposure... How much sunlight does a dormant herb plant need? How much water???

Winterizing My Herbs

Hello!

I need advice on winterizing my herbs. I live in northeastern PA, in zone 5b. My herbs are currently on a raised outside deck in 2 gallon pots. I cannot bring them inside for the winter because there is probably not enough sun exposure inside our house. The herbs that I would like to winterize are parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, chives, and mint.

I was told that I could cut the herbs down to about 1 inch, cover the pots with mulch, place the pots as close to the house as possible, and these herbs would probably "regrow" next spring. Is this sound advice? What advice would you give to me regarding this siyuation? I will try to do what I can to save these beautiful plants over the winter!

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Best of Palm Beach on a Budget

Hello!

My senior parents are going to be visiting the Palm Beach area this coming week. They are considering relocating to this area permanently. For now, they will be visiting for a week or two just to scope out the area.

I am looking for moderately priced but delicious "eats". My parents eat everything with the exception of raw meat/fish, organ meats, and lamb. I am trying to compile a list of great places so that they do not waste their time at substandard food establishments.

All suggestions are welcome and are surely appreciated! Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

2012 Bloomsberg Fair Cuisine

Hello and thank you all for your suggestions for chow at the Bloomsberg Fair! We did make it to the fair on the very last night! I am so happy that we did, because we had some great food and had fun watching all of the people.

We started off at the new Blazing Swine BBQ place, We all enjoyed the BBQ platter with the succulent pulled pork and the ribs. We do hope that they come back next year so that we can enjoy their food again!

Next, we ventured to Gross's for their famous hand cut and double fried Belgian style french fries. My toddler devoured them! They were excellent in the crispness and also the quality of the potatoes. We loved them!!!

The third stop was Bissinger's for the apple dumplings and cinnamon ice-cream. We did have to wait in line, but it did seem to move rather quickly. I would have waited a lot longer for those sweet and flaky dumplings and the smooth cinnamon ice-cream.

Finally. we stopped at Mr. Sticky's for a sticky bun, of couse. We loved their sticky buns with nuts. I could eat one of these every single day!!!

Thank you to everyone for directing my family to these wonderful food stands at the fair!!! We will be going back next year to try more places if our stomachs can handle it!!!

2012 Bloomsberg Fair Cuisine

Hi cleobeach!

I hope that my daughter has wonderful memories of our time together, too...just like you do! I know that I have wonderful memories of my mother...

As far as black and white milkshakes, basically they are vanilla and chocolate. There are two possible ways to make them, either half vanilla and half chocolate ice cream or vanilla ice cream with the perfect amount of chocolate syrup so that the shake is a color right in between that of a chocolate shake and a vanilla shake.

I am not sure if the black and white terminology is from Philadelphia, (like calling sprinkles "jimmies") or from Hazleton. This was what my parents used to call the shake that I described! Everyone in my family loves a black and white milkshake!

Thank you for all the wonderful information, lisavf!!! Once again, you have proven to be a wealth of information for our area!

We are planning our excursion for tomorrow, so I will be sure to arrive at the fair in a very hungry state so that I get to try all of your recommendations. I will try to share everything with my husband since he is much bigger than I am.

My little one LOVES french fries, black and white milk shakes, baked potatoes, plain hotdogs and hamburgers (only the meat without the bun), and chocolate chip cookies. She also loves barbecued meat if it is more dry and not so spicy. Would you happen to have any recommendations for any of these items???

Thanks, again, for your recommendations!!!

Thank you for the recommendation, ithimus! My husband LOVES sticky buns, so I imagine that we will be stopping by Mr. Sticky's.

BTW, is Mr. Sticky's located in the Williamsport area??? A few years ago I went to a great sticky bun place in Williamsport with a friend of mine who lives there. I am wondering if this is related....

Hello!

The Bloomsburg Fair is in full swing, and my family of three ( my husband, 3 year old, and myself) will be going this week. I am wondering what your recommendations are as far as the food. We like everything, and we are willing to splurge on anything that is exceptionally delicious, even if it is unhealthy.

All recommendations are welcome! Please try to direct me to the area where your recommended food is located, if possible!

Thank You!!!

What is the consensus on Create A Cone? I have reviewed the ice-cream situation in AC, and it doesn't look so great! I would prefer to stay away from chains for my entire vacation, so I will not be so happy to go to Ben & Jerry's or Rita's. (I can get this any time!!!)

I still have hope... BTW, I hope that the power has been restored or will be shortly for AC and the entire region! Maybe noone can post because of the power outage...

Thank you for your reply, Quine! Where is Pho Sydney located? I LOVE Viet Namese food. I lived in Philly for 14 years, but we now live in the mountains of NE PA. I really miss eating at Viet Nam Restaurant....:(

What would you recommend from their menu???? I do love pho, but I like other stuff, too!!!

Thank you for the reply, coldsolderjoint! I am happy to hear that Bill's Gyro is safe to eat at because I love greasy spoon type places. Usually I follow a semi- vegetarian diet, but while I am on vacation, I will be eating everything!

So, do you think that Tony Boloney's sandwiches are as good as White House??? How does TB's pizza measure up to the best of AC pizza?

Atlantic City Vacation with Active 3 Year Old

Hi NJ Chowhounders!!!

My family is coming to AC for 4 days (Sunday-Wednesday stay at the Chelsea Hotel) at the end of July. I have beem reviewing posts on AC dining, but I thought that I would ask for your help. We are interested in the best that AC has to offer, but we would prefer to stay away from more formal casino restaurants. After checking out previous recommendations here, I have come up with the following establishments as dining possibilities:

White House Subs
Little Saigon
Baltimore Grill
Fairmount Tavern

What is your opinion of my list???What should we order at these 4 places? Are there any other places that we just should not miss???

I would also like to find an ice-cream shop. I grew up going to Springers in Stone Harbor, but I have no idea about ice-cream in AC!

What about fudge and water taffy??? Do you have recommendations?

If we decide to eat on the boardwalk, where should we go? I have heard Bill's Gyros mentioned, but someone recently said that this place might be lacking in cleanliness. What do you think???

Do you have any favorite pizza joints on the boardwalk or any other place in AC? I used to go to a place in Ocean City called Mack and Manko's (I think!) when I was really young...I loved to watch this bald man who looked like Mr. Clean magically spin pizza dough like a flying saucer on his finger tips!!!

Well, thank you for your advice!!!

Beginning My Vegan Journey

Will,

Thank you for your thorough and very informative response. I must apologize because I did respond to you to thank you right after you posted, but I must have made some sort of error because my original response is nowhere to be found!

Well. thank you for all the information. I have checked out much of it, and it has been very helpful for me! I am still not at the vegan stage, but I am still working toward that as my goal. I have now cut out all meat. poultry, and fish. I am still lacto-ovo, however, I am a work in progress!!!

NEPA Farms Selling Soybeans and Produce

Thanks for all the great information, Lisa!

I am trying just to be as healthy as possible and to direct my family in this way, too! As far as becoming vegan, I am not even close to that! I am still consuming eggs, milk, and chicken on a limited basis. I have managed to cut out red meat and pork, so I am making progress. I am happy to do my best to reduce my Carbon footprint!

I am starting to plant my garden this weekend, so maybe I will be able to grow enough produce for my family so that I do not have to depend on any other sources...LOL...I wish!!!

Well, keep me posted if you come upon any interesting info! I appreciate your guidance!

Thank you for your reply. Lisa! Sorry that it has taken me so long to reply to you!

The Forks Farm Market sounds great. I hope to get there this weekend depending on my schedule

I do have a question for you regarding soybeans...Do any of the merchants sell soybeans in bulk? I am interested in 25 to 50 lbs. of dried soybeans. I am also interested in 25 to 50 lbs. of brown rice. Do you have any idea where items like this would be available to me?

Thank You,
Valentine

NEPA Farms Selling Soybeans and Produce

Hello!

I live in Drums, PA...between Wilkes Barre and Hazleton. My family is new to the area, and I am trying to find a source of organic, local, farm-grown vegetables, fruits, and soybeans. Any sort of farm stand or even a roadside stand would be acceptable, as long as the food is fresh and of good quality. I am also looking for sources of organic honey, eggs, and milk. I have been to the Hometown Market, but I was not very impressed. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for me????

Thank You!!!
