Bit o Scotland fish and chips

If you can handle a few street people, Catch 21 is just up the block from Fisherman's Outlet. Good prices; the sole is great, and the owner is friendly.

Very nice meal at Limani Taverna (former Papadakis Taverna venue)

When they did away with Beacon Street, they killed DT San Pedro, hence the lack of traffic. Papadakis was really too much fun to be duplicated.

When only SALT will do?

I too am a saltaholic, always have been, but I know why. Salt lovers should have their doctors check for adrenal insufficiency, aka Addison's Disease. It can kill you if ignored.

Joe's Jost's ( a quickie reminder review)

It's been years since I was in Joe Jost's, so I was surprised to see the pix on their website showing that the place is (apparently) clean. At one time, the stuffed head over the sandwich prep area was so covered with cobwebs you couldn't tell what kind of animal it was. That was the charm of the old place. Great memories!

Copenhagen Pastry on Washington in Culver City. Sinful!

Best tacos/burritos in Glendale, 2014 edition.

Tacos Casita El Carbon is very friendly, and their food has great taste. Their carne asada tacos are tougher than shoe leather--but they taste good. Their shrimp tacos are good. Tres Hermanas, on Central, south of Colorado, appears to have changed hands. Their food was very tasty, and doesn't seem to have changed.

Most of your outdoor outfitters have it. Sportsman's Warehouse (online) has plenty.

Inexpensive NO-frills great Italian in Northeast or Eastside L.A. (Like Alejo's)

Talk about meh! That's Columbo's. It's supposed to be an "Italian" steakhouse, but the Italian is more fiction than fact.

seafood/burgers/steak/italian near Capistrano Beach

Very few places within walking distance, especially along the beach. The area around Dana Harbor has a little of everything, but driving is a lot more realistic. There are plenty of holes in the wall in San Clemente, and Coast Hwy in Dana Point has a number of places. If you're looking for a sandwich, don't miss Tutor and Spunky's Deli on PCH in Dana Point.

Is there a place in LA like Max Brenners or Ghiradelli?

John Kelly has great chocolate, but it's strictly takeout--unless you want to stand in front of the counter and pig out.

Bludso's Texas Sampler - will it hold?

I've tried Fieri's recs in several states. Without exception, they've been wretched. Bludso's should be careful who they let in the front door, or, especially the kitchen.

Pasadena Sizzler Closing

That being said, does it make sense to "offer" valet parking. The valet in Atwater screams bloody murder--in barely discernible English, of course--if you try to self park.

Burritos - LA Dish of the Month (April 2013)

The shrimp burrito at Baja Fish Tacos, 17th and Orange in Costa Mesa. Shrimp done in a wine sauce with cotija cheese. Unreal!

Smash Burger Culver City

They opened at 4 pm, Dec. 30. We were there for lunch the next day. They were friendly and attentive, even hovering, which wasn't bad since we also had the problem with the beeper. The staff noticed we were without food and checked immediately.

I have no idea why they chose Culver City over someplace a little more central to LA.

We've eaten at the Smashburger in the dining wilderness of Boise, ID. Culver City is better, both were good. After all, this is a $5-6 hamburger joint, not Mortons. The fries were underseasoned, but still good.

We'll go back whenever we're south of Washington Blvd.

Any better subs than the ones at Giamela's?

Tony's is good, but the garlic dressing can be a little strong at times. Also try having them remove the center slice of bread.

Visiting Orange County (Costa Mesa) from South Carolina, never been out west, any and all advice appreciated!

Baja Fish Tacos, at 17th and Orange, Costa Mesa. Try the shrimp taco. It's like no other shrimp taco you've ever tasted.

For higher on the scale, the Golden Truffle, on Newport Boulevard, at 17th, also in Costa Mesa.

Jaybee's Bar-B-Q in Gardena

Seems a little far east to be in Gardena, but that's not the issue. I've tried several of the recs from Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, in several states, and have been disappointed, to say the least. I have serious reservations about taking DD&D's hype.

South Orange County Sandwich Shop Search (Mission Viejo/RSM/FR)

Tutor and Spunky's is still worth the drive, and their new place even has tables. But, the marina is just down the road, where you can enjoy your sandwich with a view.

Golden Baked Hams, at the Alicia off-ramp from the 5, is also a great place, and probably closer to you.

Been to The Boiling Crab?

If this is Maryland or Cajun, it's the Asian version. On entering, the customer is immediately assaullted by "waitresses" who give the appearance of being more like bar girls than purveyors of food. The shrimp are overcooked.

Where can I find the world's best burrito?

If grease and cheese are valid criteria, I have just the place. I've been craving a Kosher Burrito which, as we know, is long gone. I managed to track down a facsimile, a Pastrami Burrito at Pharo's, at Garfield and Atlantic, in Alhambra. While it hardly qualifies as the "world's best", and it's not the smae as the original Kosher Burrito, it was darn good. I'll certainly go there again. As the owner said, pastrami and chili make a great combination.
