Manuel's tortilla soup! [moved from Austin board]
Does anyone by chance have the recipe for Manuel's superlative tortilla soup? I know it starts with an ancho chili roux but I tried and didn't get anywhere near the color and texture of theirs. Any help would be much appreciated.
Table Manners for Kids
Thanks for that addition! Chewing with an open mouth is a pet peeve of mine. So rude! My daughter and I began teaching my grandson manners as soon as we felt he understood and when he makes a mistake and we correct him he just happily does it right because he sees it pleases us and that makes him feel proud. I think it so unfair to let a child become one that people don't want to be around..
The best of the best of the best...
I promise you if you go to Uchi you won't regret it. The food and the people are terrific. I'll be looking forward to your report.
Carrabba's and the most blatent lie ever!

Batali got the boot (from FN)
Are you kidding? He's my idol. He makes a great living doing what most people I know would love to do. He's smart, funny and he most certainly knows how to cook. I wish I was Anthony Bourdain.

I was macrobiotic for a few years when I was living in LA. and I love food. Just not macrobiotic food. I was doing it to try to save my soul. You know, no drinking, no smoking no fun. No way! I figured out a better way. I became an ahteist.

She annoys me because she appears souless. And utterly boring.
Belgian Endive ideas?
I realize you want to prepare it with what you have on hand but I couldn't resist mentioning one of my all time favorite things to eat. Years ago my sister and I went to the Sherry-Netherlands Hotel in Manhatten every day we were there for lunch, about a month, to eat their endive and beet salad with a simple oil and vinegar dressing. The flavors were a match made in heaven.
Cheap Greek near Downtown?
My son attended Kirby Hall right down the street from Milto's twenty-five years ago and at that time we made the aquaintance of Milto and his wonderful restaurant. I'm a second generation Greek foodie and in my opinon his gyros are absolutely craveable. I don't know how they could be any better. The lamb is crispy and garlicky and the home made pita bread is excellent. The little knotted rolls are indistinguisable from my own grandmother's and she was a reknowned cook. He even has some Greek lady make the baklava. All I have to do is think about the gyros and if I'm in Austin, I'm having one!
I'm looking forward to trying the new El Greco and hopefully the Athenian Grill if they actually open.
Anyone have experience with Ketchup burger restaurant?
I read about Ketchup and thought it sounded really good. Going to be in LA soon and want any comments.
Anyone have an opinion on Zen?
If I may ask, what did you have? In fact, what all do they have?
Anyone have an opinion on Zen?
