Legend Seafood (Oahu): "Best Dim Sum"?

Nice day is walking distance from downtown, 15min, but easier to use car.

They are in the Times grocery and apartment complex on Liliha and Vineyard with dry cleaners, subway, american savings bank.

Oahu - best dim sum; lunch by Diamond Head?

Mei Sum is kaput for regular dishes. Dim sum still ok, but I won't be eating there anytime soon.

Want to try Happy Days since my go to place is Nice Day. Does the different chef affect the quality of the dim sum or just the regular dishes??

Legend Seafood (Oahu): "Best Dim Sum"?

Mei Sum has gone downhill... their dim sum is ok, potstickers aren't up to par, regular menu is bland as heck.

No one has the love for Nice Day? Great prices, good dim sum, pay cash w/coupon and 15% off? regular menu is tasty. Wish could eat at Mandalay all da time, but this sure hits da spot.

CHEESE CAKE

Weird, are they like rich, creamy quiche? Hard to imagine a non-sweet taste.

chinese salted duck eggs, 1000yr eggs

Whites of the salted eggs were too salty, yolks were interesting to cook with. Overall found duck eggs funky tasting and not my preference.

Currently incubating a batch of salted chicken eggs.

1000yr old eggs were... beautiful color, taste bleh. The albumens had a great flavor but then a strong hit of ammonia which was terrible. Supposedly some of these eggs don't have that flavor. The yolks were creamy, but the idea of duck eggs from the salted eggs carried over and spoiled the experience.

Made some (chicken) tea eggs, which I enjoyed.

Will be making these if the Taiwanese eggs taste like this dish has potential.

Care to dig up a recipe for the 1000 yr old eggs?

chinese salted duck eggs, 1000yr eggs

Went to the festivities on Saturday, but also Friday, which was also a street fair, and the businesses were popping their doorway crackers and inviting the lions.

(On Friday) went to a store on Hotel st some yards toward River st past Wo Fat and found both types of duck eggs in packs of six. Non-refrigerated from Taiwan, $4.25/pack.

Ingredients were simply duck eggs, salt, and for the 1000yr old eggs, lye. No lead! says the package. Great!

Somewhat uneasy about tasting the old eggs, but the salted eggs have my vote of confidence, I will be cooking with them soon.

Chinatown or other location, anyone have a specific store?

Never tried either but want to try and have recipes of which these are ingredients.

Small kid time my mom, aunty, and popo used to eat them, but do'nt think mom has had them in decades.

best place for clams

checked tamashiro, they have manila clams, and are out of littlenecks. both are $5.95/lb. they are open on ny's eve, i might get them here.

chinatown marketplace has two vendors selling manila clams, also for $5,.95/lb. they are a tad larger than tamashiro's. not sure if they are open on ny's eve.

i purchased some items at palama for the recipe, but did not see any clams there.

best place for clams

looking for medium sized clams, 2 kilos, about 4.5lbs.

i have never bought clams before, and fish not too often. would a place like chinatown marketplace or actual stores in chinatown be cheaper than the supermarket? would they be as clean?

which supermarkets would have good clams?

3 Day plan in Oahu: need to whittle down Fancy dtown dinner, North Shore & Kailua dinner

although they are among the best beaches in the world for swimming, sunning, playing in the sand and some watersports, lanikai/kailua are terrible for snorkeling, the water is murky and there are no fish.

go to hanauma bay instead, you will love it there. one of the best beaches in the world for snorkeling, and "close" to the windward side.

diamond head hike = easy except for a stair section, but the heat can be killer, so go early (6am) or late (4:30 is the latest you can get in, and you must be out by 6p). Hike takes 30min up, 15 out.

i recommend you hit uncle clay's after the diamond head hike or hanauma bay. gourmet shave ice!

Bar Hopping Around Oahu

try the group bicycle that stops at multiple bars either in the kakaako area or waikiki area. the seats are arranged in an oval around a bar and most of the seats have pedals. you can't drink on the bike in honolulu, although other places allow it, but they hit a good number of drink spots. cheaper than a limo and more fun, no waiting in lines at the bars and guaranteed seats/tables.

Thanksgiving turkey packages, any experiences?

My parents' friends got their spread from Safeway!! I was surprised, as I was told they were getting the food from there by the wife a few days prior, but I thought she was joking! We got to the party and there was the turkey in a Safeway container! Although nowhere near as good as my mom's homemade turkey when she does it right, it was better than my mom's turkey when it comes out bad (which is infrequent, and usually limited to the breast meat being dry)... The sides were ok too, cranberry sauce recommended, gravy spot on. I enjoyed the food and the company quite a lot.

MAny years ago, my popo took a bunch of us to Zippys for Thanksgiving dinner cause no one felt like cooking a turkey that day, and the food was decent diner food and we had fun not doing dishes. Sounds like they must have improved over the years.

where to get modern products brand brewer's yeast?

i bought modern products brand brewer's yeast from either whole foods or huckleberry and like the nutty flavor. it comes in a gradated brown cylinder like a cheap parmesan cheese can.

whole foods, down to earth, kokua market don't have it now.

anyone know where to get some of it?

or a similar tasting brand? NOW brand tastes like beer and kal brand tastes cheesy.

Oahu, Thanksgiving week 2014

just ate at the pig and the lady. the dishes and drinks are incredibly inventive and unique in addition to tasting great, but quite rich and don't think i could eat there often.

the presentation of the works was beautiful, a huge beef bone boiled in a gingery broth like hawaiian oxtail soup (no soup included). marrow scooped out tableside. uni butter plus marrow plus truffle oil and truffles on bread created a sensation the chinese call 'nau.'

had the gnocchi and p&l pho. pho was very good, would order again and try the other types of noodles they serve based on that. mom commented that the broth was too spicy. gnocchi was good, unique sauce, gladly eat again, but not a must try. i removed some of the fresh fennel sprinkled on the dish, as i don't like too strong of a licorice flavor, and the amount left added to the taste of the dish.

dad's pork was the favorite. fatty with a tasty sauce.

checked off list of places to try, but new dishes to try added, and i would like to taste the lunch menu, esp. the creative bahn mi sandwiches. you will have a fun time eating here, the atmosphere is energetic and pleasant, and the staff is friendly, the owner is present and smiling.

add eggy to the yeasty flavor. malasadas are a treat.

the extra walk will help them burn off the calories from the malasadas!

KC Drive In Rumor?

their waffle dogs are overrated, but i miss the restaurant. we get the dogs from golf tournaments, and they are such a good idea, but don't taste that great.

surprisingly, puka dog / aloha dog sounds unappetizing, esp. the wacky fruit relishes, but the flavors and the puka bun work and taste delish.

Oahu, Thanksgiving week 2014

if you want shave ice, you have to try uncle clay's in aina haina (east side). no other shave ice will do; if you try them, you will be sorely disappointed. or...if you try them first, you will appreciate uncle clay's that much more.

for malasadas, leonard's, champion, and agnes each have their own appeal. champion is on beretania less than a mile from leonard's (i'm guessing). the order of yeasty flavor goes: leonard's > champion > agnes. the order of exterior crunch is reversed: agnes > champion > leonard's. agnes' outside will even stay crunchy locked in a steamy car for an hour. they are all soft and fluffy in the center, leonard's w/out a crunch. you must try them all.
