went hiking there today, heard they sell their grass fed beef directly to customers if they pick it up. saw a lot of cows on the hike, they weren't in stalls or small pastures, they were all over ka'a'awa valley, even right in the areas used for movies like godzilla, you me and dupree, etc. and a lot of cow shit all over, even the mountainous areas. does that make them free range?

bought some chuck @ 4.29/lb, cheaper than the usual steak for stir fry i get from the grocery store, which is 5.99-6.99/lb. i'm not sure what cut of meat the stir fry beef made from, but there was more marbling in the chuck, though not a huge amount, it was just right. there was not a huge amount of fat to cut off, hardly any, actually.

cut the sucker into cubes and strips, seasoned w/salt, pepper, chili flakes, chopped garlic, threw into sizzling pan w/a little olive oil for 30 sec while stirring, and... heaven. next time i'll use much less garlic, the flavor of the beef doesn't need a competitor. i'm salivating.

highly recommend. i will be ordering from their website or stopping by whenever i'm on the windward side for beach/hike.

prices are about equal to the supermarket at regular price, at least for the cuts i was looking at.

sounds like she should be able to make good fried chicken: http://kokoheadcafe.com/chef-lee-anne..., bio says it's one of her personal faves, but dunno if fried is how she preps her jidori chix.

Where can I purchase a good quality pastrami?

i was looking at a post from 2007 regarding bread (and found joebob and fatstern both moved here around that time) and mauna kea baking company was mentioned. what were your impressions? perhaps you could convince the dr to bake a special batch of rye?

or chris sy takes orders http://www.breadsbybreadshop.com/, even though kman doesn't agree with his vision of 'burnt bread.'

lavender as food = bleh.

hawaii already has premium honey such as volcano island honey (fave is pearl white kiawe). check website.

stuff you can get in cali and the west and can't get here...

mexican/latino products (we do have puerto rican, though), i don't know if mexican coca cola is still available here,

there is nowhere you can get any fudge here (except for see's which only has so-so choc w/walnuts)

certain liquors, there's a thread, maybe a microbrew?

anything eastern european, but i don't think you have that in cali...

trader joes is a great call, +1 to whoever suggested it

costco gift cards would be appreciated, everyone knows someone with a membership (in fact our iwilei store is the busiest costco in the world).

Ethnic and other affordable eating options near the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu

i haven't encountered much grilled fruit here, even pineapple.

even poke made with previously frozen ahi can be pretty good. i had a 1/2 lb each of korean and hawaiian style from foodland which was made w/frozen ahi from the phillipines. not the best, but still ono.

they're only ok, don't get too excited.

zippys has really jacked up the prices of everything.

long gone are the days of the $1 portuguese/egg/cheese sandwich, the staple of hung over teens at 3am.

Where can I purchase a good quality pastrami?

reuben sammitches are always the bomb.

i still hold that nyc has the best widely available pastrami and most other deli sandwiches compared to specialty, upscale places, although langers LA may be 'the best.' depending which neighborhood you are in, decent sandwiches abound in nyc.

nyc for the best pastrami sandwiches.

we finally have boar's head, which is the standard in ny delis.

foodland or safeway, i forget which. give them a call and let us know!

i was going to say that too, but didn't want to get into the nitty gritty.

my previous question was trying to clarify what is 'normal' where she comes from. no answer.

must try for breakfast: wailana coffee house's all you can eat pancakes... cheaper than their regular pancake plates. under seven bucks! coconut syrup is pretty good, esp to someone who doesn't generally like coconut flavored sweets.

ono seafood closed for renovation / times has fresh poke

just got to try ono seafood's poke.

you guys are right about the quality of the fish, quite noticable and welcome.

a little heavy on the seasoning, but would have been fine with rice. i don't know if they still toss everything together right after your order - if they do, you could tell them to go easy on it. but with rice, ono as is.

$18/lb for ahi, less for tako. i probably won't be back save for special occasions due to location and price, and times is right down the st. a true gem, though.

i should have specified soul, but the response about rays is interesting too.

a buttermilk marinade is typical in southern fried chix, i don't think many places use it here.

do you think the difference has to do with the quality of the chicken, or the prep, ingredients, and cooking process? (i have not tried them yet.)

Fried Chicken on Oahu

kfc is the same as always, i worked at one for a month a loooooooong time ago. same seasoning packets, same pressure marinators, same drop fryers. they're ok. don't know if they still have the grilled chicken, it's pretty good. many of the oahu locations are closing, some replaced by popeyes.

popeyes are a little better than kfc, crispier, lighter seasoned. you can save a lot if you cut coupons.

i have no special love for zippys fried chicken, but it'll do in a pinch.

still like church's, but pearlridge is too far away from town.

love my mom's fried chicken she makes with a little cornmeal. add a dab of honey or spicy korean sauce... nothing like mom's home cooking.
