best dutched cocoa powder available on oahu

tried valrhona, love it, will never go back to non-dutched cocoa for brownies.

also available locally is guittard, cocoa barry, and droste. has anyone had experience using any of these compared to valrhona?

valrhona cocoa powder on oahu?

thank you, r fields has it, and a dollar cheaper than amazon.

i will check EC and hopefully they sell it by the kilo for a reasonable price... it is that good.

this cocoa makes the deepest, darkest fudgy brownies.

eventually i will do a comparison with other dutch processed cocoas, but valrhona sets the bar high

have you done robot sushi? sushi on plates goes around the restaurant on a conveyor belt. price is per plate. there are several genki sushi places near ala moana. no reservations iirc, but you should double check.

there is makitti in waikiki, a buffet with foods from around the world with a hello kitty theme. just get the buffet and not the extra "prime rib."

Good food in Kapolei?

Kapiolani community college has the largest farmers market. there is a large whole foods at nearby kahala mall.

again recommend kualoa ranch beef, esp if you're on the windward side to get to whole foods in kailua. also a farmers market at windward mall.

there's a thread on collectives which deliver local produce boxes.

Good food in Kapolei?

lots of farmers' markets all over the island.

eat the street is a monthly gathering of food trucks in kakaako, sometimes they will have an extra meet in kapolei or another central or west side location. streetgrindz.com.

kualoa ranch on the windward side has grass fed beef you can order via there website but must grab it from their location. i recommend it, and depending on the cut, it can be cheaper than the supermarket.

abuse the search function, there are many great threads on each of the categories you listed.

welcome to the islands. serg's in manoa or waimanalo is where you can get your mexican fix...

Aloha Hawaii! Please Critique SF Chowhounds' Visit to Kauai and Maui for Next Week!

when i lived in nyc i didn't go to many fancy restaurants. had peter luger's 3 course meal for $20 on special, loved this tapas bar in my neighborhood when i was in brooklyn heights - they closed. went to gotham once. i lived above blue water grill at union square, ate there several times. when i went for a visit i ate at smith and wollenskys.

i recall visiting a manhattan cowboy bar with a gaudy red interior and a red covered wagon hanging from the ceiling. definitely not fancy, but i kind of wonder where it was/what it was called, i was in a haze at the time. any guesses?

ty for clearing that up, lol, been telling everyone it was on kauai.

eric ripert? oahu boy here and don't know him. also have not yet been to AW or nobu. we live in town, but you'd be surprised at some of the rural areas. i lived in kahaluu til i was ~4, and it gets more rural than that! i do have memories of a kauai trip long ago, the highlight of which was a phallic rock.

i generally prefer cookies chewy, but kauai kookies are decent. i do taste the guava, somewhat mild.

if you are ever on oahu and 'cookies by clyde' are available, snatch them up; all the flavors are excellent. although crunchy, they are some of the best cookies i have ever had. i am not sure who clyde is, and have heard many rumors, but apparently he makes his cookies only for certain occasions and events, esp fundraisers.

french toast w/taro bread is good too, great idea kathryn.

have you tried eggs, rice, and spam for breakfast, lol? mcdonald's has it on their menu, but i'd switch up the spam for portuguese sausage.

also make sure to try a loco moco while you're here, hamburger patty over rice topped with a fried egg and brown gravy.

something i want to try is mac and cheese pancakes at morning glass cafe.

ease her into raw fish by introducing her to seared ahi sashimi. when you get fresh raw fish, the taste and texture is incredible.

in addition to ono seafood (best poke, they use sashimi grade ahi), try uncles: http://www.unclesfishmarket.com/. short drive from waikiki. their poke tower is excellent. for this dish they also use sashimi grade ahi. you can find aforementioned seared ahi sashimi here, and they have a large menu of more familiar dishes.

nicos, which i have yet to try, is next door.

jollibee on king/dillingham/liliha

ate there for the first time today.

ordered a cheeseburger and two pieces of dark meat chicken.

cheeseburger was mcdonalds-like bun, similar chewiness, ok. (i did not eat the bun, but visually examined it and tore it into pieces for my dog and got a feeling for the texture.) slice cheese was orange american. dollup of thousand island (no pickles) dressing. patty was on the thin side. i observed the meat was grey/green upon inspecting a cross-section. gross-looking, but tasted ok. i suspect a vegetable is mixed with the meat, but that's just conjecture. $1.49. this was the most basic burger.

chicken was a drumstick and thigh. unlike max's of manila, the chicken is american southern style. i rate it as even with church's, which is my preferred chain. plain but good. salty, a nice level, and juicy. skin is identical to my memory of church's. $2.09/piece, expensive. their posted menu lists mainly combo meals, i am not sure if they do buckets and quantity pricing. manager said coupons would be available in the future. update: buckets seem to be offered based on a web search. also forgot to mention they offer a cup of brown gravy with chicken, which i liked quite a bit, and used the leftovers for a riceless locomoco.

they also have spaghetti (filipino/local style hybrid from the pics) and desserts. i would like to try both the spaghetti and their desserts when i'm at the maintenance stage of atkin's.

would i have the chicken again at a lower price? emphatic yes, although i don't often eat fried chicken. burgers? i suppose, if i'm buying chicken and already there and have an uncontrollable burger urge, but chances are 99.9% against.

From DC to Oahu for a week : June 12-18th

hopefully that location will draw the crowd away from the liliha liliha bakery, i live close by and once i start eating more carbs, i'll be getting those waffles.

if you have a huge appetite for breakfast, hit wailana coffeehouse in waikiki for all you can eat pancakes for $5 and change. comes with meat and eggs too.

uncle clay's house of pure aloha in aina haina has shave ice that will blow your mind! other shave ice is crude compared to clay's pure and crisp sweet notes of fruit. ten minute drive from town on off peak hours.

!! surprised you are 60yrs !! based on some of your other posts, you're pretty feisty for an older guy.

i have limited experience w/the outer islands, but i did enjoy merriman's on the big island and it was comfortable and casual.

i'm not sure of your exact interests, but i had fun visiting the ocean rider seahorse farm at the kona airport, i mentioned this in several other posts. got to look at diff stages of development and actually play with a seahorse. you'd fly into this airport if you choose merriman's.
