crabs - cantlers or harris or other

I decided we'll go to Cantlers. Seems that both Cantlers and Harris get the most positive reviews. We've been to Harris a couple of times so always nice to go some place different.

I will say I like Harris on a nice warm day it is fun to sit outside and watch the boats go up and down the river.

And nothing better when you add a pile of steamed spicy crabs and a couple of cold beers to the mix.

We'll be going on a Tuesday and probably early so won't have to worry about the crowds. Sounds like it can be problematic on weekends.

And getting the largest crabs just makes sense. May cost more but just so much easier.

Thanks for all the advice. Looking forward to our crab feast. Actually looking for to good food and drink for the entire week.

Anyone ever shop at a Weis supermarket?

I was so upset when the A&P in Manville and Pathmark in Hillsborough closed. I live approx. halfway between the two and it was super convenient to run to either last minute if I needed to.

So when I saw that the Weis was opening I was happy. I went there the other day, realized last minute I needed something for dinner.

Not sure why but I thought it was high end supermarket. It is not. I felt like I was walking right back into the Pathmark. I wanted some good crusty bread. The Weis breads were all crusty bread wannabees. They did have one little stand of artisanal breads. They have a very small seafood counter, nothing remotely gourmet in the prepared food area.

For high end supermarkets Wegmans on 202 is still my go to place. For my regular shopping I like the Shoprite in Somerville. I was never a Shoprite fan but I really like the one in Somerville. Great selections of all kinds of things.

But I'm happy the Weis opened as at least when I run out of something I have a place within 2 miles.

Volt for brunch

Thanks for the reply. With all the great restaurants and limited time in the area it gets difficult planning things.

Other option would be to stay in Frederick in between DC and Baltimore and go to Volt for dinner. Trying a bit to watch our expenses. I'm sure dinner there is quite pricey, figure brunch would let us experience the food and be a bit less expensive. But honestly if worth it, we don't mind spending the money.
Trying to decide if worth the detour or not. We'll be in DC for three nights so we'll be eating well when there.
Any further info would be appreciated.

Volt for brunch

I'd love to eat at Volt but don't know if dinner there will fit into our schedule on our DC trip. We could stop there for brunch on our way to DC. Has anyone been for brunch? What are your thoughts.

crabs - cantlers or harris or other

We'll be down in DC and then Baltimore in a week. We've been craving steamed crabs. Looking for the brown paper on the table type of place. Have been to Harris Crab house before and liked it. Cantler's gets good reviews too. Any one have a preference of one over the other? Or any other places local to that area that would be better?
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks,

Dining suggested needed

Thank you so much, this was just the kind of advice I'm looking for.

I do think we'll spend Saturday afternoon in the South Street area. Will definitely check out Royal Tavern and Percy Street. I'll have to do some research to see what other places are in the area. From what I've read seems like a lot of pretty good restaurant and bars in that general area.

Also have never been to Fishtown. Is this the same thing as Northern Liberties? Is it walkable from there down to Morgan's Pier? Again I'll have to take a look at the various bars and restaurants and a map to see where they all are in relation to each other.

I've wanted to go to Standard Tap for a while as I hear that was pretty good, and Frankford Hall sounds like just the kind of place we'd like.

Off to do more research and keep the suggestions coming.

Thank you,
KathyH

Dining suggested needed

We will be in Philly for Memorial Day weekend and I'm looking for some advice/suggestions. We are staying at the Warwick Raddison in the Rittenhouse area. We are all in our 50's and like to have fun. But not into clubs, more into funky bars, gastropubs, neighborhood places, etc.

My sister and her husband are coming with us and they prefer "plain" food I guess you'd call it. Whereas my husband and I love a dining adventure. I figure that many restaurants offer a happy medium.

Also my husband and brother-in-law are beer guys. Philly has tons of great beer bars.

Last time we did this, we did wandered and noshed as we did. Oysters at Sansom Oyster House, mussels at Monks, Noddinghead to get something my sister would eat and she loved her sandwich. The second night there we ate at Khyber Pass pub which everyone really enjoyed.

On Saturday I was thinking of wandering the Italian market and South Street area. We've never ventured over to that part of town. Figure we could do a bit of trying this and that at every stop, and throwing in some sightseeing as we go.

I'd love to find a place similar to Khyber Pass with food for everyone and a great beer selection. We may just wind up going there on Sunday.

Also on Sunday afternoon was thinking of going to Morgan's Pier. Mainly because the location looks great. From there we'd wander down to old town area. This will also depend on weather. At the rate we are going, sitting at an outside bar may not happen at all this year. Other suggestions for outside dining and drinking, beer gardens, etc. would be appreciated.

Lastly looking for brunch suggestions in the Rittenhouse area. I was thinking of Parc. My sister loves biscuits so another place that has a more southern or down home type of brunch menu would be great.

I know this post is rambling all over the place, sorry for that. Just looking for ideas and any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Morristown restaurant recommendations

We will be in Morristown in a few weeks and looking for a place to have dinner. Like pretty much all food, but looking for something interesting/special. I saw Blue Morel and thought that could fit the bill. Anyone have any experience there?
Any other places to recommend?
Any and all input appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Lambertville/New Hope dining suggestions

I thought I remembered reading that Brian's was open for breakfast or lunch. Doesn't say anything on the website. Anyone know if it is open? If so, might give it a try for lunch tomorrow. If not, Brian's is definitely on the list for our next dinner in Lambertville.

Looking forward to dinner at D'Floret tomorrow.

Lambertville/New Hope dining suggestions

I've only been to Lily's once. Not sure why we haven't gone back. To me it's more of a lunch spot than a dinner spot. Have to give it another try.

Lambertville/New Hope dining suggestions

While Marhaba sounds good to me, not sure it would appeal to my husband.

In the end I wound up making reservations for D'Floret.

As for "cons" I've seen a few on trip advisor and yelp but looked past those to the good reviews.

I'm sure it will be great. We are going this Saturday.

Thanks,

Lambertville/New Hope dining suggestions

I am trying to decide between Brian's and D'Floret. Both have pros and cons according to all the reviews. May just toss a coin. Figure if we don't go to one this time, we'll go next time.

D'Floret was where I was leaning so may go there this time.

We are staying overnight for two nights, going for winterfest. We go every year. So parking won't be an issue as we'll have parking where we are staying.

Last couple of times we parked over by Triumph in New Hope and paid the meters. Was easier than searching for a spot in Lambertville on the street.
Thanks.

Lambertville/New Hope dining suggestions

We'll be in Lambertville for the weekend at the end of the month and looking for dining suggestions for Saturday night.

We've been there quite often before. My husband's favorite place is Hamilton Grill. I'm so so about it. I really like Manon. Last year when we went we had dinner at Tastebuds and really like it but want someplace differant this year.

Have never been to Brian's or D'Floret so thinking might try either of them.

Anyone been recently? What are your thoughts?

All suggestions are welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Need help with dining choices Vegas next week

I normally have all my research done way before I leave but for various reasons I am way behind this time.

I've done a lot of reading on this site and others, plus looked a menus from the various restaurants.

Looking for one or two great dinner options. Sure I'd love to dine at a place like Guy Savoy or Joel Robuchon but those places are a little too rich for our blood.

We like all kinds of food but I particularly like farm to table type cuisine or interesting new American menus. If we could do a tasting menu for around $60 to $100 pp that would be great. If we could do that including wine it would be fantastic.

I thought Sage might be a good choice as they have a tasting menu paired with wine or beer. That works as I'm a wine person and my husband a beer person. Plus menu looks interesting and seems to have gotten good reviews

Other places that interest me are Jaleo or Julian Serrano as we could both try a bunch of items.

Any other suggestion that might make a good dinner choice?

For lunch I think Comme Ca might be a good choice. A few years back we went to Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay and may go back as he really loved the burger there.

I will be on my own for lunch for at least three of the four days as he will be at Superkarts at the Rio. I would like a place that I could easily eat at the bar and feel comfortable.

How about a great brunch option? Thinking of Bouchon.

I know this is a lot of questions but as I said I am behind the eight ball this time so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime off to research some more.
Thanks,

KathyH

National Parks Trip Zion, Bryce and, Arches

Check out Hell's Backbone Grill in Bouler, Utah. It has gotten tons of good press for good food and a decent beer and wine selection. http://hellsbackbonegrill.com/

I've never eaten there but will in November when we travel down scenic route 12. In fact after reading about the restaurant, seeing a program on TV about route 12, I altered my trip a bit to fit both in.

bbq and beer fest at Monmouth this weekend

I just saw that there is a bbq and beer festival at Monmouth raceway this weekend. Anyone been to this in the past? My sister and husband were thinking of going and thought we might join them if worth it.

Looking to see if I can find out what breweries are there and also an idea of cost of the food and of course quality.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Thank you for the replies. I thought the menu at The Syndicate looked interesting.

Do you happen to know the name of the other brew put in Niagara Falls?

Trying to decide if it is worth spending the money to have dinner at a fallsview restaurant. We don't mind spending money on meals and it quite a bit. But hate to spend tons on a mediocre meal. I also realize that the view might make up for it.

Hmmmm, what to do, what to do?

Niagara Falls

We are leaving in two weeks for a trip to Niagara Falls and the finger lakes area. Leaving from NJ Friday night and staying in Liverpool overnight. Saturday morning on to Niagara.

Plan to stop in Buffalo for wings and for beef on weck for lunch. I will ot ask for wing recommendations as I know everyone has their favorite. Probably will go to Anchor bar. I know, I know, but it is where they started. May try one other place for wings. Going to Schwabels for beef on weck.

From there on to Niagara on the lake for three nights. We will probably spend Saturday evening wandering around that town. Any suggestions for a nice casual place in town for dinner? I thought Stone Road Grill looks good. I'll take any other suggestion. We like all kinds of foods and restaurants, from 4 star dining to a bar with great cheeseburgers. Husband is into beer while I prefer wine or cocktails but will drink beer.

Sunday we'll do the falls. Plan to stay until evening fireworks. I'm llooking for a great stop, overlooking the falls to sit and have a few drinks and appetizers as we watch the lights come on over the falls. Don't want any place to dressy as we'll be at the falls all day so we'll be in casual clothing, neat but casual.

We may then go somewhere else for dinner, in the area and back to watch the fireworks. As for another place I heard there is a brewpub, The Syndicate, in that area. Any good? I realize most brewpubs have so so food, but figure husband may like it for the beer.

Those are my questions as of right now. You've all be so helpful up to this point so I expect I'll get tons more great advice.

Thanks in advance for your help.

SLC to Vegas (indirect) (Moab, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon)

If you are in route 12 you may want to stop in Escalante at Hell's Backbone Grill. Now I've never been but have read nothing but wonderful reviews.

I will be going there, but not until our trip in November. In fact, it is the reason we are overnighting in Escalante.

Cooking Classes - Girls Weekend??

90 Acres at Natir Restaurant in has a cooking school with a wide range of classes.

In the future they may offer lodging but right now they do not.

Another place is the CIA in Hyde Park, NY. Again, no lodging but plenty of places close by. They have one day classes plus longer ones. Husband and I took the BBQ Boot Camp one year and it was great. It was fun, informative, plus we got a lot of really great food and wine too.

Private Party Locations in Central NJ?

We have held our annual animal shelter volunteer holiday party upstairs at alphonso for about 8 years now. We do the pizza party package to keep costs down. They always do a good job and the food is good too. They will work with you on liquor and will let you bring in your own cake too.

Thank you all for your help. Mom of the mom-to-be booked Martell's Tiki Bar. She said that they were able to work with her on price, which is good as when I called they were $$$.
