July 2014 COTM: Radically Simple - Desserts

I used a tart pan with a removable bottom that is 4 by 13 inches. I had some extra batter that I put in a mini loaf pan. The mini one came out of the oven at about 15 minutes, and the larger one I baked a bit longer than the 18 minutes in the recipe. The mini loaf one was difficult to get out (good for tasting it ahead of time though) so I wouldn't recommend it. Anything removable should be ok as long as you increase the bake time a little.

July 2014 COTM: Radically Simple - Desserts

Almond Galettes p. 310.
Almonds are toasted then ground in a food processor. Eggs, sugar, and lemon zest are added and processed then baked. I used regular eggs instead of extra large. The result is a fairly dense and tasty cake. I added berries and whipped cream and skipped the glass of sherry that the author suggested as an accompaniment.

I might make this again as it was very easy, and a good recipe to have on hand for guests who can't eat gluten (it's gluten free)

Pickled Seasonal Vegetables: Home Cooking Dish of the Month for June 2014

Made pickled eggplant with garlic, basil and hot pepper flakes. It gets covered in oil and has to age for about 3 days before eating.

Galette: Home Cooking Dish of the Month for May 2014

My crust is made with rough puff pastry that I had made and stored in the freezer. I used a recipe from river cottage and brushed it with an egg wash before baking. It comes out of the oven flaky and crisp!

Galette: Home Cooking Dish of the Month for May 2014

I made this galette. The filling is caramelized onion, leek, spinach, and cheese. I made up the recipe. My galette is square though, so is it still a galette?

COTM May 2014 Announcement Thread: My Bombay Kitchen: Traditional and Modern Parsi Cooking by Niloufer Ichaporia King

Yes LulusMom, I have now called the library to let them know. There were about 20 pages torn out in total! They also have another copy at a different branch that I can get, and so I can pick that up later this week. I felt sad to see such a nice book treated like that.

COTM May 2014 Announcement Thread: My Bombay Kitchen: Traditional and Modern Parsi Cooking by Niloufer Ichaporia King

I just got my copy from the library to find that pages have been torn out. Pages 35 to 40 for example seem quite important since must contain the ginger garlic paste and some other spice mixes. Any help with basic ingredients would be appreciated. I hate it when people rip pages out of library books, so selfish!

Savory Pancakes: Home Cooking Dish of the Month (Nov. 2012)

I don't know if socca is what you are looking for, but it is egg free and really easy to make. It's similar to some of the suggestions below, but of Spanish origin I think. Also gluten free for those who can't have gluten. It comes out crispy and really tasty. The topping options are limitless, starting with no topping, to arugula salad, pizza toppings, salsa with cheddar, or anything you want really. I posted my recipe here. http://www.recipezazz.com/recipe/socca

Brunch Sunday before touring ROM

I went to Over Easy once. Got to agree, it's really mediocre....waited for ages, was served salad from a bag with rotton pieces in it, sent it back and was then served more of the same salad. Asked the server "would you eat this?" she said no. Complained and got nowhere with them. Would never recommend going there.

Hammersmith's (Gerrard and Logan) - great brunch!

I went there a few weeks ago for lunch and it was delicious. Had the chicken salad sandwich and really enjoyed it and loved the salad too. The extra pommery mustard was nice, but no chicken skin with mine. Not fancy, just very good ingredients made with care. Went on a Tuesday, and it was not busy at all; glad they're doing well on weekends. Looking forward to going back soon to try something else.

atta flour in toronto

Got the Golden Temple brand at my local Metro grocery store (at Shopper's World Danforth in the east end, but you could try other Metros...). I find it quite different from whole wheat flour in that it is less heavy when baked, and doesn't seem to have the bran content of ww flour.
