September 2013 Openings and Closings

It's my understanding that Fresh City and Souper Salad are the same company and have been since at least the late 90s. So perhaps just corporate types helping out?

Sunday Brunch in Providence that's not Nick's or Julian's

I"m fairly certain North has cancelled/suspended brunch for the time being.

Julian's is probably my favorite brunch in Providence, but the Grange is great as well and many of the other restaurants mentioned here will do just fine. Tazza has a solid brunch as well. The atmosphere at first glance might strike you as pretentious but the service is anything but.

Ten Tables (Cambridge) vs. Henrietta's Table

Ten Tables no question. I am completely underwhelmed by the food at Henrietta's Table.

Legal Test Kitchen (LTK) bad experience

I actually had a surprising good experience at LTK last time I went. It wasn't my choice, but I had scallops on the tortilla, apple and goat cheese salad. I had sworn off Legal after a particularly horrid experience at the Dedham location, where both the food and the service were laughably bad.

September 2012 Openings and Closings

Sign in the window says they are re-opening as The Organic Table (unless that's not a new thing, I haven't been in probably a year). They have a FB page but it's not updated. It didn't look like there was anything going on when I stopped by last week. I really wanted a smoothie too!

Stoughton Patch had an article a while back saying a restaurant named Amelia's from the owner of Sofia's Steakhouse in Dedham/West Rox was going into the space.

PVD/RI * August '12 * Open/Closed/Coming Soon

They have a basic facebook page up, Stock Culinary Goods. Looks like it could be a nice addition to the area.

I believe Apna Punjab is technically in Rehobeth, not far outside of Attleboro if you are in the area. I enjoyed it as well.

New in Newport?

I typically make a bunch of day trips down to Newport throughout the summer (mainly when I have friends and family visiting) and was wondering if anyone knew of any new restaurants opening up this summer?

Salavation Cafe was papered over when I was there last week, but it looks like they are re-opening (or at least the signs say so). Anyone know? A while back it looked like they were working on the Sala's building and I seem to remember a sign for an oyster bar so I was surprised to see the building completely gone when I in Newport last week. Are they still planning on opening a restaurant there?

Mosaic Latin Bistro - will it re-open?

Their facebook page says they are officially gone. Hopefully they will resurface somewhere in the future. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?...

Where to meet for drinks & light fare near Needham Center?

I've had a few good meals at Center Cafe, but I can't recall if they have a bar. Rice Barn is good and Petit Robert is a solid choice, though it was recently sold to a new owner, and I have no idea if anything has changed as a result. I'm not a huge fan of Sweet Basil, particular with 6 on a Saturday and with an event to go to. I seem to remember service being on the slower side.

Blue on Highland down in Needham Heights has a large, upbeat bar. The last meal I had there was unimpressive, but if you are just doing drink and apps/salads it might be a good choice.

March 2012 Openings and Closings

Sabra was closed earlier in the week and construction was under way. Terry O'Reilly Pub opening in 6-8 weeks. Looks like they are completely gutting the place.

The Indian restaurant a few doors down Union. India Paradise (?) was closed as well.

Ceviche in RI

I didn't have it uncooked. I was answering the OPs question about additional seafood options on the menu.

Ceviche in RI

Plenty of seafood. I know I've had scallops and tilapia there. The menu is pretty big and there is always a few specials.

Ceviche in RI

Try Los Andes on Chalkstone in Providence. I haven't had the ceviche myself (allergies) but it always looks delicious and I've heard good things about it. They offered to make one for me omitting the various things I'm allergic too, but I haven't been back to take them up on the offer. Everything else I've had there has been great. I can't remember if it's a special or on the menu so perhaps call first.

PVD/RI * October * Open/Closed/Coming Soon

KitchenBar is by the same owner as the pizza place that was there before, work on it seem to be sporadic.

Dinner in Milton

Abby Park has been disappointing the last two times I've been and it's used to be a fav when I was in the area. Have you been recently? Perhaps my two disappointments were a fluke.

What to do with pickling cucumbers?

Getting the pickling recipes out of my google (and chow) search results was the problem. I had a feeling a could treat them as regular cukes but wasn't certain. Knowing they are a bit less bitter and I can use my regular recipes, makes dealing with these a piece of cake. I guess the "pickling" connotation through me off. And I suspect since I'm probably in the minority in disliking pickles, that doesn't help either.

What to do with pickling cucumbers?

My CSA yielded two "picking cucumbers" as described by the farmer, this week. Other than make pickles (I hate pickles, I know, I know), what can I do with them?? Other than size, how are these tiny cucumbers different than the regular cucumbers I adore?? Googling hasn't helped at all.

Thoughts??
