I made this a few months ago and yesterday made 2 more, this time with the 8 oz (instead of just 7 oz) of cream cheese.
Every time it's come out perfectly. I do think it could use a teeny bit more sugar (calls for only 1/2 cup and I DID make the effort and bought superfine sugar). Very light. I use apricot preserve glaze. You don't feel heavy, lethargic eating this after a dinner party.
I use an oven thermometer because I know my oven is slightly hotter than it should be.
3 days in SF, non-fine dining experiences needed for this weekend
Dumpling Kitchen, Taraval bet. 29th Ave/30th (Sunset District -- fairly easy parking). Closed Wed.
Opens for lunch and then is open straight through to 9:30 pm (they don't want you to arrive later than 9, for sure)
Terrific dumplings (be sure to get # 1 (soup dumplings) and # 8 (steamed won tons in chili oil). The Moo Shu is good. Generous portions, VERY reasonable. Everyone I've brought there loves it.
Itinerary for our honeymoon in SF/Napa. Thoughts?
Union Square is the center of town and department stores .. this area is in between the wharf and the mission with lots of hotels. If you want to stay at the wharf, check out Holiday Inn Express. There's also a Marriott Courtyard on the wharf and also one on 2nd Street, South of Market near financial and Union Square.
Why do you continue shopping at CostCo? I am underwhelmed. What do you appreciate about the warehouse store?
I'm pretty sure it's not the no salt. They had 2 kinds: 6 cans for $13.99 (the one I buy, very white and firm) and a skipjack one for 6 cans for 8 something.
I'd been wanting to try the chicken pot pie but the price was $17 or $18 dollars (big one) but the other day it was only $10 so I got it. Well, we didn't like it; only had a few bites and threw it away. I know they'd have taken it back but I didn't want to deal with it at that point.

In SF they would not let some people sneak in w/out card just to buy the pizza -- I guess they usually get away with it when guy at front is looking the other way.

You know, you don't need a membership card to buy prescriptions. (I do have a card, tho) I used to call around to comparison shop the drug prices but Costco was always the winner so I don't bother comparing any more.
Tuscan olive oil (glass bottle, think it also says Kirkland on it) is great. Love the avocados. When they start to get a little bit soft, I put them in fridge and they can last about a week that way. Love the organic baby romaine. I found out my Costco gets produce deliveries Tues/Thurs/Sat so I try to time my visits for those days. Their plants and trees are excellent and great price -- I just bought 3 delphinium plants for $10.
Litter in the green plastic. Although, they've gone from 30 lbs to 35 lbs -- kills me to lift and carry upstairs.
They carry 2 kinds of Wild Planet tuna -- I love the white one, not packed in water nor oil. I love the Knudsen cottage cheese, great price and I can (usually) finish it before it goes bad.
Liberal return policy if you don't like something.
Roadtrip up East Coast
Red's Eats and The Lobster Skack at Two Lights, Cape Elizabeth, Maine were my two favorites on a road trip 2 years ago. Trying to go again this Oct.; for about 6 nights, think I'll go to Boothbay Harbor this time, any other places where I must stay? (Last time was Camden.)
Favorites
Yes, I go to Following, then Saved Topics. Just now, I got only one new one (Melissa Clark) and then several had the red mark but no new comments in a very long time. Like this one:

Opening them up does not make them go away. And, they are all expanded. Never had this problem before.

Itinerary for our honeymoon in SF/Napa. Thoughts?
Rec. for Chinatown: Start walking at the entrance, Bush/Grant. Walk Grant to the end (Broadway). (If Golden Gate Bakery is open, there is usually a line. Great egg custard tarts.) If you then cross and walk on upper Grant, that's the North Beach (Italian/Beat) area. Grant is fun because there are lots of little shops and it's FLAT. The streets that cross it are steep and full of restaurants.
After the Grant walk, walk back on Stockton -- that's where all the Chinese food shops are, very interesting. (Stockton is also a flat street.)
There are Segway tours of the wharf and also in GG Park -- my daughter did one in the park and loved it.

This is from pigs that have been eating acorns, right? I had it when I was in Barcelona and it was very good but I don't think the price should be higher than great prosciutto.

I adore the tacos (crispy ones) at La Taqueria but most people would be very impressed by Tartine; I was just in there yesterday. Since Bi-Rite Creamery is 1/2 block away, I would do Tartine and ice cream at same time. (There was no line yesterday (Monday) during the day.
Concerning Bi-Rite Market: some of the eggs are $8.99 dozen and jamon Iberico is $99.99 lb -- (is anything worth that much a pound?)
If you like caesar salads, have the one at Zuni -- I think it's perfection.
Cooking from Mighty Spice Cookbook by John Gregory-Smith
I've now made this rice several times and have decided I like it a lot; even good cold the next day. I make an effort to get organic cilantro/parsley -- so much nicer.
A really nice basmati rice is Zafarani Reserve .. I find it at Indian stores.
Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012
I've now tried both the pears in white grape juice (glass jar) and peaches and I really like the peaches, they are nice and firm, not sweet like canned, more like real fruit. But, I won't buy the pears again because they are way too soft.
Tom Wilson Oranges at Andronico
These are the only oranges I crave; when available, I eat about one a day. Really incredible, intense orange taste.
Itinerary for our honeymoon in SF/Napa. Thoughts?
Try not to go when there is a line (45 Min. is not worth it). If you're there when there is a long line, if you want to just buy a pint, you can skip the line.

I have not been to FL but EVERYONE I've talked to who has been has told me it's worth it. So, I say, GO. (Starve before you go!!)
You can offset the expense by choosing inexpensive, excellent places like tacos at La Taqueria.
Are you interested in dim sum? I love Yank Sing (Rincon Ctr, 101 Spear St, near Ferry Bldg.).
Don't miss salted caramel ice cream at Bi-Rite.
Tom Wilson Oranges at Andronico
It's 16 April 2012 -- I was told they probably would not get the Tom Wilson oranges this year but when I went to the store today, there they were -- they are near the checkstands. Bags only, $3.99.
They say they've had them for a week -- taste as good as ever to me!
Baked Bean -- Failure
Thank you for the advice. Nowhere in the recipe does she say to soak off the salt or to remove the rind. Just says to slice the salt pork and I had the butcher do that for me.
I still rec reading the book but I'm going to throw this recipe away (along with the beans!).
Baked Bean -- Failure
I decided to make real baked beans and used a recipe from The Feast Nearby
http://www.amazon.com/The-Feast-Nearby-preserving-bartering/dp/158008558X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334538643&sr=1-1
I really enjoyed this book and the gingerbread loaf was a hit.
So, last night I put the northern beans on to soak for 12 hrs. She said the baking soda in the soak was optional, but, I included it.
After emptying out the soaking water, she has you put 1/4 lb sliced salt pork in with the 1 lb of beans and water, bring to a boil (I skimmed off the foam even tho recipe did not say to do so) and then simmered 2 hrs. By this time, they were getting mushy. You are then to discard the salt pork that you boiled with the beans.
Then, you're to layer them in a pot with bay leaf, 1/2 sliced onion, 1 cup sulphured molasses (I only had unsulphured so I used that), 2 T Dijon and the rest of the salt pork (another 3/4 lb.)
You are supposed to bake this at 325 F for 4-6 hrs. I stopped all this after 3 hrs because beans were mushy AND not edible because WAY TOO SALTY. I'd been thinking all along a pound of salt pork for a pound of beans was A LOT.
So, I have to throw it all out. I've been looking at other recipes on the internet and some only call for a 1/2 lb of salt pork. (Could mine have been saltier than most? I got it from a very reputable store. Now, I want nothing more to do with salt pork.)
Any ideas? Do you have a recipe that you love?
Whats the best sandwich/picnic food you can get for a a day at Golden Gate Park?
Since you're going on a Thurs., do the bike ride and then plan to go to the Thurs night Acad of Sciences. They close at 5 pm, reopen at 6 pm to 10 pm, adults only and it's only $10 instead of $30. You can chain your bike up outside. Their cafe has great food. I'm not sure if you can buy the food w/out an admission ticket.
San Francisco/Napa 40th Birthday Trip - June 7/8/9/10
You are only going to have coffee or tea before your lunch at FL, right? (Gotta be hungry for this place!)
In SF, I love Dumpling Kitchen on Taraval (bet. 29th Ave/30th Ave). Closed Wed, opens about
11 am and does not close in between lunch and dinner. (Closes at 9:30 pm). Delicious food, esp. dumplings. Get # 1 (soup dumplings) and # 8 (wontons steamed w/chili oil. Everything I've had there is great. They are very generous and reasonable. You can take the L Taraval streetcar to get there if you don't have a car. (Parking is easy.)
coconut oil that tastes like coconut
Is that the brand they carry at WF? I've seen some at TJ. Where did you get yours? (This is in ref. to Dr. Bronner.)
straight onto a roasting pan? Marcella Hazan's Lemon Roasted Chicken
I do mine in a shallow All-Clad roasting pan; no problems. It's my favorite way to roast a chicken now. I do mine breast down for 40 minutes, then turn right side up using paper towels.
The leftovers are delicious cold, too. I get a good chicken that has not been frozen. I prefer the non organic ones because the organic ones I've tried never get tender. I get big lemons in the bag at Costco so I just slice one into quarters and stick them into the cavity and tie up the legs, bend back the wings.
pineapple ricotta cheesecake recipe
I made a point of getting fresh ricotta (whole milk) from an Italian specialty shop .. it tastes so much better than Precious brand.
pineapple ricotta cheesecake recipe
I've gotten raves whenever I've made this recipe.
Tough chicken in Chicken Scarpiello
I've discovered that when I use organic chicken, it does not get tender. (Maybe they run around the yard too much and develop tough muscles?) So, I just buy the best non-organic chicken I can find.
Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd quarter 2012
Ditto on the Israeli feta; I take mine out of the plastic wrapper and put it in a glass storage thing and it lasts for about a month. (I like it on my salads.)
Burgers and coffee, that's elf food, apparently -- your thoughts solicited
I've only eaten there once; got the burger with truffle salted fries .. got the fries on the side instead of inside the bun.
