What is all the fuss about Red Velvet Cake

Thanks! I'll have to tell my sister about it. She lives near Huntsville and she's a RV cake fanatic. I'll want her to see if this place has a cake that's better than the recipe I use to make mine! :)

Chick-fil-A's Chicken

It seems as if I'm in the minority! I love Chick-fil-a, it's safe to say it's my favorite fast food restaurant. To each their own I guess!

What restaurant did you have it in?

Orange-infused Water?

Most of the "recipes", if you can call them that, simply slice the oranges rather than squeezing the juice out of it. If I'm not mistaken, there is one on here that follows the same procedure, but they used cucumber as well as orange slices.

Orange-infused Water?

I took a glass pitcher and filled it with near-boiling water. I added oranges to it to make orange-infused water and placed it in the fridge. But when I tasted it the next day, it was bitter! The oranges are plenty sweet, so I have no idea what I could be doing wrong. Do you guys have any ideas?

What foods do you refuse to eat?

Raw apples. Puked in 2nd grade while the class was making apple pie. The length of the hallway to the bathroom was a mess!!

Stop Bashing Paula Deen

If I'm not mistaken, Anthony Bourdain had a really bad drinking problem at one point. So what gives him the right to determine what is "dangerous" to America's people? Just as many people watch his show as they do Paula's, and they can be influenced by his past substance abuse just like they can be influenced by Paula's eating habits. Another point to realize is that Paula is not saying, "Cook this food everyday, y'all!" It is up to the viewer as to what they put on the dinner table at night.

If You Could Create Any Restaurant....

What food would it be solely dedicated to? Like subway has sandwiches...what would yours be? I thought about it this morning and I would open a restaurant focused on creating different versions of a cinnamon roll. Yes, Cinnabon, Cindy's Cinnamon Rolls, etc. are open, but they don't offer orange rolls, or white chocolate toffee rolls!!! That might be a good thing for my waistline, though :) Anyway, what would you create??

Military Retirement Party Catering??

When I say cater, I really only need someone to prepare the food, not literally serve the guests, bring plates, silverware and go the "whole nine yards". The party is going to be pretty casual, with just family and friends. His actual retirement ceremony with dinner and speeches, etc. will be a few weeks before, so this is sort of after-party I guess :)

As far as the surprise, we really just want him to know that we are with him during his transition. Like you said, he is under stress and the last thing he wants to deal with is a party, so we are taking it upon ourself to show that his friends and family are proud of what he does. You're right, the whole process from planning to inviting and much more is definitely not easy, but it is worth it. I'm sure his time spent serving the country was much more of a bother than a party will ever be, though! :)

Military Retirement Party Catering??

We informed the caterer that we only needed the food delivered to the venue since there will be a kitchen for us to use. As far as a meal being provided, we plan on having the after most people would have had dinner-later that night. His actual ceremony with dinner, speeches, etc. will have passed, so our goal for the party is to have him relax around his friends and family, not have an actual meal. But I understand what you're saying. In the end, I just don't want to be taken advantage of as far as catering when we are ONLY asking for the food to be prepared.

Military Retirement Party Catering??

I have multiple questions here, so stay with me :)

My dad's retiring from 20+ years in the Army and the family is planning a surprise retirement party for him. For the menu, we've talked to a well-known caterer within our area. The estimated price she gave us was around 650 dollars. For the simple finger food we are asking for-chicken wings, fruit, dip-I was wondering if this was a standard charge for catering? Also, how hard do you guys believe it might be to self-cater the event? As I said earlier, we only want simple appetizer type food, and there will be, at the most, 80 people at the party. In the end, I am really looking for any information you guys might have. We ("The Party Planners") are completely new to this, so any guidance would be helpful! Thank you :)

What discontinued products do you miss?

These chips I had while living in Germany were so good!
I'm not sure if they're discontinued, but I can't seem to find them.

What Food Thing Are You Currently Craving--Like Right Now!

We had an amazing funnel cake this friday so I really want one of those!
Maybe a Nathan's hotdog with a golden, toasty bun and caramelized onions.
And a weird one, pumpkin muffins with cream cheese frosting. I think that is due to the incoming fall weather.

1st B-day cupcakes & frosting?

To each his own! :)

Paula Deen recipe again haha. I know how some Chowhounds feel about her :P
Anyway, the frosting is good, but not great. I think that was due to the fact that I only had light brown sugar instead of dark. It has potential.

1st B-day cupcakes & frosting?

Paula Deen has a great red velvet cake recipe!
My mom just recently made a coconut cream cake by Emeril.
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/em...
We omitted the ground pecans and you can barely taste the coconut. I thought the cake was a white cake at first.
This is a vanilla cupcake I made today, but I used caramel frosting instead. It's nice and moist.

Household food battles: Foods you love but your loved ones hate (and what to do about it!)

I tend to "hide" ingredients when I cook meals for my parents. For example, my dad doesn't like onions, so I just chop them up smaller. They haven't complained yet, but then again I'm 14 so they could be protecting my feelings. I doubt that though ;P
As far as baking, my mom hates muffins, but she is in the minority, so i'll make them for myself and just freeze leftovers.

Need a new bread/ dinner roll recipe. Can I have yours, please?

http://traceysculinaryadventures.blog...

This one is really quick and really easy. I just shape it into rolls and omit the step about placing a water bath in the oven. There is also a buttermilk version of this recipe :)

Bourdain vs. Deen

Paula does not MAKE you cook her recipes, so it is frustrating when some people say that they dislike her due to her food. As with everything, a Paula Deen recipe with 3 sticks of butter is to be made and eaten in moderation.

The Ten Most Insulting Things Anthony Bourdain Has Said About Food Network - Grubstreet

Excuse my typo.
I meant to say just because he might NOT agree with the techniques of the FN stars...
Thanks for pointing that out :)

The Ten Most Insulting Things Anthony Bourdain Has Said About Food Network - Grubstreet

Honestly, I can't stand the guy.
I've read a bit on him, and all his comments seem so forced. Almost as if he is trying too hard.
There is a difference between being rude and giving criticism, and just because he might agree with the techniques of most FN stars, other people do.

What is Chicken Fried Steak? Is Brown Gravy a Travesty?

When my mom makes chicken fried steak, she makes a brown gravy. Definitely not premade...so I think it's to each it's own. I personally would rather have packaged gravy on a real CFS than to have to choke down the frozen CFS from the grocery freezer. So gross lol.

What TV Chefs have given you ‘mostly’ consistent recipes vs those that have been hit and miss.

I've made tons of Paula's recipes! Everything, especially her cinnamon rolls, turned out very good.

Back To School Breakfasts

Hey Hounds!
This upcoming Monday I'm heading back to school for the year, (first year of high school! Wish me luck :D ) and I need breakfasts ideas. I'm making overnight cinnamon rolls for my first day, but that isn't very practical for the rest of the year. I'm looking for different foods that could be made ahead and freeze properly. This way I could pull it out the freezer, heat it up, and hit the door.

Thanks in advance :)

Foods you always "deconstruct"

I do it with sausage biscuits haha. I will eat the sausage then spread strawberry jam on the top and bottom slices of the biscuit and eat them seperately. Same with Poptarts. I'll eat the outer crust parts, then pick the frosting off of the top. I eat the outer, crunchy part of an eggroll first, then eat the filling.

Kudos to you adventurous Hounds because I can't see myself eating the things you mentioned!!
I will gladly admit that my tolerence for certains foods are extremely limited! Maybe one day I will have the guts, but for now, have at it Chowsers!

Bringing your own condiment(s) to a restaurant?

Well you gave an answer so I gave my opinion. It isn't a big deal, I just think it is over kill. If I'm not mistaken, in a previous post you did say the restaurant supplied cloth napkins inside, which led me to believe you could simply ask for one.

How bad can service be before it ruins the meal?

I visited a restaurant recently and we didn't hesitate to get up and walk out. For one, we were seated at our table and waited a good 10-15 minutes before we were greeted by our server. Add 10 more minutes to be given our water. This is where it gets good. Once our water was finally given to us, the cups were filthy. So filthy that a residue could be seen from outside of the glass and when a straw was scraped against the inside of the glass, the filth started floating into our water! This was in 4 out of the seven glasses! We aren't picky diners but that was revolting! Needless to say we promptly left and went to a local restaurant instead.
