Barre VT rec's - group of 20

Thank you everyone for the thoughtful responses - they booked Ladder 1 (the old firehouse) for their meal. My Mom grew up in Barre so it's kind of a special historical treat!

Figured I'd hear from you first M! Yes, it's a high school reunion (my parents) and a pretty tight schedule. Looked at two other places that didn't quite meet their expectations. Any help is appreciated!

Best farmer's markets/ farm stands?

Great suggestions all around - we find the Stowe market (route 108) on Sunday mornings excellent as well. It's a little early for produce right now however

Looking for a reunion-friendly place and need help! Mid August, food is priority and would prefer a quiet environment. Cornerstone is booked unfortunately. Any thoughts?

Where can I buy large quantities (an amount resulting in 8 cups of leaves or more) of basil anywhere in an arc from Ft. Myers to Plant City to Tarpon Springs?

Faithful Farms in Palmetto (just south of the Skyway) should have what you need

I will add a few to the above, plus a suggestion:

Jade Bistro
Thang Long

Thanks for reporting back on your findings...

Royal Red shrimp in Tampa?

Wahoo's on Redington Beach had them last week - they taste like lobster! Bonus points given for serving them head-on

Where can I eat in the Franconia NH area?

Absolutely second the vote on Sugar Hill for food and ambiance though the children may get a bit restless during length of service.

New Vietnamese restaurant Sarasota - any Chow reports?

Had pho bo there the last couple of times - ask for the steak on the side if you want it rare; haven't had a banh mi from JR in a while because I'm stuck on the grilled pork one from Miss Saigon down the street.

What's one great place for lunch in St. Pete near the museums?

Two rec's Rona: directly across Beach Drive - Parkshore Grill is excellent and it's still cool enough here to sit outside and enjoy the park/water view; Z Grille - couple blocks south and very worth the trip - Zach is a former JB nominated chef and the atmosphere is fun, food is phenomenal. Best thing to do nearby - come visit our beaches!

Update - got 4 perfect lively lobsters and a pound of steamers today - just as great as the last time there.

La V - Vietnamese fusion St. Pete

Great new addition to downtown - we had two versions of pho bo and the house special Da Nang noodle soup. Both were served with the traditional sprouts, veg and herbs. The Da Nang was an awesome alternative to a traditional pho - wide noodles with a pungent briny seafood broth - a really amazing flavor. Excellent service from the wait staff. Great Boba also.

Good produce selection in Indian Rocks Beach?

Try Graham's Produce on 54th Ave North - it's probably 20 minutes away from IRB and definitely worth the trip

Returning to Key West after 40 years

Unfortunately Nola, KW is quite different from the 70's - actually very different from the early 80's when I first started my summer long trips there. Some of the old salts still haunt the old places, and the parrot still roams the bar (different bird tho). Positive sign is the growing food scene in Bahama Village - less touristy than old town with great food. Please let us know your findings

Restaurant recommendations in New Hampshire and Vermont

We just returned from Stowe and as previous Hounds have posted, reservations are a must at the better places. We dined at Hen and Blue Moon - both excellent and well worth planning for.

Foliage is in full swing after the cold front Saturday with best views in the sheltered mountain valleys and mid-mountain; best views yesterday were in the Smugglers Notch/Mountain road area.

Sarasota Inkanto Authentic Peruvian Cuisine

Tried it for lunch yesterday with a biz colleague of Cuban descent - we both agreed the food quality was topnotch. The place is extremely comfortable inside and waitstaff must be part of the family - incredibly knowledgeable about the food and wine. Don't miss the yucca app - perfectly fried and tender, almost like eating a jumbo French fry and served with 3 wonderful dipping sauces. Went the healthy route and ordered the marinated grilled shrimp salad which was excellent as well. Next time will be dinner with my wife to try their wines. Try it soon, hopefully their volume will pick up.

Sarasota - hard shell Maine lobsters 5.99/pound

Very interesting to hear Juli - their sign out front read 'firm shells - 5.99' and that drew me in; never squeezed them as I was seeking the smaller ones. Just gave the chix the squeeze test and they are certainly not hard shell and not softies either - kind of in between. A summer lobster for sure. Enjoy!

Sarasota - hard shell Maine lobsters 5.99/pound

At Boothbay Lobster Direct on Hillview, just west of 41. I got 5 chix 1-1/4# each as a special for $30 - real nice and lively. Time to take advantage of the fishery glut!

Lunch at Isan Thai in Sarasota today

So I broke out the usual Vietnamese routine for lunch today and tried Isan today - it was excellent quality food: prepared to order fresh rolls with shrimp, Panang curry with tons of veg - served 'Thai hot' as I asked, which usually happens only after visting a place a few times. Really flavorful as well. Great service and authentic setting. Definitely the go-to Thai place in Sarasota!

Sparta NC - a culinary desert?

Ok, we found a jewel in the rough - River Rock Grill in downtown Sparta, maybe 2 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance. Craving steak, the hotelier suggested this and called for us. A winner for food quality with excellent filets and a very awesome crab cake special. We are Florida folks and know our cakes, and these were outstanding - very little filling and lots sweet crab and no veg mixed in. Nice to see the 'standard' sides were yellow and green squash with red bell pep and not a fried accompaniment. Twice baked potatoes were excellent as well, as was the micro brew and wine selection. Low-key place with a pretty vast bar-ish menu, but you can't go wrong with the specials as Coach told us!

Hello fellow 'hounders - we're heading to Sparta for a property buy this weekend, previous trips have shown nada/zero in quality food. Can you help? Promise to report results. Thanks!

Mise en Place - Tampa

After two recent vists in too long, the food, service and artistry still remains TOP of the food chain in Tampa. First recent meal we sat at requested window table facing south as it was a Saturday night and wished for a quiet, conversational meal - and it was. 'Get Blitzed' tasting menu with excellent pairings served by a trio of educated staff. Highlights: tempura oysters - possibly the lightest, tastiest fried thing I've ever eaten; tuna carpaccio with truffle; risotto with Maine lobster; perfectly prepared filet.

Wednesday's dinner was a planned small plates affair for three of us - tuna carpaccio again (great), cornmeal oysters - slightly heavier and served with a rich aioli and tomatoes; charcuterie plate - all great, highlight was the foie served in a tiny mason jar that didn't really need the currant jam on top but wow still; lobster poutine - better this time than last - yes it's slightly heavy, but a small plate; arugula and beet salad. Several others were good but not highlight worthy. Wonderful kicker was Chef Marty signing the menu for our special guest! The atmosphere is really laid back cool, in contrast to the linen and Riedel glassware.

Hemingway's in Killington. What's up?

Yes, hurricane Irene did them in. Very unfortunate as the Killington area lacks high end places (although Birch Ridge Inn is excellent) - and I've dined there since before I knew what great food meant. I believe Chef Ted and his wife paired up with local farms for a concept dining approach although we haven't indulged as of yet. Going back next month and will look them up and report.
