Vegan foods at Trader Joe's - What's good?

I pan fry the TJ falafel in olive oil and serve with hummus and vegan tzatziki (I make this with Tofutti sour cream mixed with finely chopped cucumber, dried dill, chopped garlic, a little salt and a squeeze of lemon). The pan frying makes all the difference. They are really very good if pan fried.

Where is the Best Vegetarian Pho in San Diego

Welcome to San Diego!

I don't know if it's "the best", but Sipz Vegetarian has vegan pho. It's on the menu at both their 30th street location in North Park and their Clairemont location. It's worth a try.

I eat there a lot and enjoy it, I've ordered the pho many times and find it to be acceptable. However as a vegan in SD, options are limited, so I take what I can get.

Avocado ideas

With bread: Toasted bagel spread with coconut oil, add a sprinkle of salt, topped generously with avocado, sprinkle of salt and pepper. Slice of tomato optional. Sublime.

Without bread: avocado, banana, cocoa and agave blended into a healthy chocolate pudding. Yum!

SD: Places to go if your having an affair. .

My first thought upon seeing the title only was going to be Albie's :)

I'm going to add Muzita Abyssinian Bistro to the list. It's small and dark, exotic, and you can feed each other with your hands.

YAY: Chocolate Almond Granola Cereal - dessert for breakfast, also vegan
YAY: Zesty Nacho Kale Chips - $2 less than at WF; vegan, too

I also recently discovered that TJs doesn't sell sauerkraut.

Tempeh recipes anyone?

Tempeh Bolognese. I've made it twice in the past week. It's not going to fool anyone, but it probably will surprise you.

CHOW Reviews: Vitamix 5200 Standard

I love my 5200. I bought it from Costco for $375 and don't regret it one bit. I don't find the use of the tamper inconvenient in the least and it allows me to make thicker foods in my Vitamix that I would have never been able to make in a regular blender.

Is there a Vitamix that you do like?

Special Occasion, Special Menu

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. After a series of frustrating conversations with various restaurants who offered nothing more creative than roasted vegetables, we've decided to go for Ethiopian at Muzita Abyssinian Bistro.

It's disappointing that we couldn't find something extra special, but we will enjoy ourselves an a delicious meal just the same.

Special Occasion, Special Menu

I'm looking for a restaurant that would be open to prepare a special menu (vegan) for a special occasion for a party of 2. I've managed to have some very good food around SD since taking the vegan plunge, but none of it's been fine dining (A lovely lunch at Kitchen 1540 being the exception)

Any suggestions for a chef/restaurant that would be willing to accommodate?

How to serve coleslaw at a party?

Vegan pulled pork sandwiches with either seitan: http://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipe... or jackfruit (this one's new to me): http://cleangreensimple.com/2011/05/c...

Vegetarian christmas breakfast, dinner, dessert

For breakfast we will have coffee and mimosas with cinnamon rolls (a gift someone sent from Cinnaholic in Berkeley - http://www.cinnaholic.com). I was going to make a vegan strata (I bought kala namak black salt just for the occasion) but I'm too tired!

Hors d'oeuvres will be vegan paté (from Veganomicon) and crutidés with ranch dip.

Dinner will be a Field Roast Celebration Roast en croute with roasted veggies, mashed potatoes, cranberry, and mushroom gravy. Vegan pumpkin pie for dessert. We like tradition.

VEGAN THANKSGIVING

I go traditional all the way. I'll make a homemade "tofurkey" with traditional bread stuffing and mushroom gravy. Sides will be mashed potatoes (veganized recipe I've made forever with cream cheese and sour cream), roasted Brussels sprouts, maple roasted sweet potatoes, green beans, homemade cranberry sauce, pear and arugula salad. Pumpkin pie for dessert with shipped coconut cream.

Alton Brown interview on Zagat.com

I've met him a couple of times at book signings and found him charming and funny and a little snarky, just as I expected him to be.

I remember an incident 10-ish years ago that involved some kook making threats against his family online through his website. As a result, he posted a note on his website explaining that he needed to distance himself and make himself less accessible as the incident deeply disturbed him. He stopped posting to his website and took a long time to get on social media. His appearances were few and very specific to promoting his books. People can be rude, demanding and disrespectful. I can't blame the man for being stand-offish if he feels it's necessary to keep him and his family safe while fulfilling the requirements of his public career.

In Search of "Old School" Strawberries (...and I don't mean those Frankenberry Monsters)

I was at Chino today. No French strawberries, but their standard ones are outstanding. Not a huge quantity available, though.

Best Vegetarian products:

I first found it at Whole Foods in San Diego. The packages were hanging on a rack at the end of a random aisle, very easy to miss.

Pie for Breakfast...

My grandmother's "real" mince pie was the jarred mincemeat filling plus a shot of whiskey baked in her divine homemade crust. I can't manage a crust, but I can buy pie dough and open a can of mincemeat filling! The frozen Mrs. Smith's will also do in a pinch if I'm particularly homesick.

Glad you like it. I'm making my way through some old (non veg) favorites using HV and have yet to be disappointed by it. I get a case (6 packages) of the burger and sausage mix auto-delivered by Amazon every 2 months so there's a steady supply to experiment with! It also saves a little over the individual price with Amazon Prime.

Quest for the Perfect Vegan Whipped Cream . . . Anybody in?

I've made very successful whipped coconut cream. I think the key is very' very cold coconut cream (from the freezer), a cold metal bowl and some powdered sugar. I've made batches that stay whipped for a couple of days without breaking.

Best Vegetarian products:

At the risk of being branded the Harmony Valley troll (no connection, I swear) I can't say enough good stuff about their burger and sausage mixes. Rehydrate and use exactly the same as a pound of meat. I grilled HV burgers for the first time last night and I don't think I'll ever order a veggie burger out again.

I'm vegan and many of the commercial burgers and chicken are not. But the Morningstar Farms riblets are, and they make a fun "Vegan McRib" dinner on occasion. Gardein's pulled pork is also good, but I find their sauce too sweet, so I doctor it up.

I don't think there's a vegetarian in the world that doesn't mourn bacon. I have made good vegan club sandwiches with Tofurkey maple tempeh and Tofurkey Italian turkey slices and Veganaise. No one would confuse tempeh for bacon, but the smokiness is reminiscent of bacon.

These are all fun treats when I miss some old convenience foods.

Indian grocery stores are heaven-sent for veggies and vegans. I love samosas, but they are a lot of work for 2 of us. Luckily there are several brands of vegan samosas in any Indian store.

Veggie Breakfast Sausage Recipes

Most of Morning Star's products are not vegan if that's a concern. I think they use egg whites as binder.

Veggie Breakfast Sausage Recipes

If a mix is OK, the Harmony Valley sausage mix is really wonderful and vegan. It's a good basic mix that can be spiced to your liking. I like it and the burger mix so much, I've put them both on auto-buy on Amazon.

After 15 minutes of rehydrating, it can be used as crumbles or formed into patties or links. I love using them to make a potato and sausage hash and the burger mix works really well on the grill.

Other than Nutella, do you have a favorite, "go-to" Chocolate-Hazelnut spread?

Agreed. Justin's chocolate hazelnut butter is wonderful, and it's diary-free, which is a plus for me.
