what's a winning Appetizer and drink combination?

"Well, if a few guests needed to use stove a couple minutes each, that would be like 6-10 minutes. Crowded kitchen - theres going to be 40 guests, the whole place is going to be crowded anyway. Implements to clean up? Right, because there would normally be no clean up after a party for 40.

How is it rude? I'm bringing food to a party, I ask "Can I use your stove for a couple of minutes"? How about asking if I can put something in the fridge for a few minutes? Is it rude if I ask for a glass of water? Gonna have to wash the glass.

Oh, I forgot the serving spoon - "Well take it back to the car."

Maybe it's just me, but I have hosted a lot of 'pot luck' parties in my life and never considered it rude if someone asked me to brrow a knife, spoon or fork, a bowl, use my stove, use my oven. Heck, I even let guests use the bathroom.

In all seriousness, let me reiterate, how and why is it rude at an 'everybody bring something to eat' party to ask "Can I heat this up?"

The idea that a host might be inconvenienced (altho I don't see this as an inconenience or imposition) doesn't constitute someone being rude to them.

"I can't find my jacket, can you get it for me?" "Pfft, never another invite for you!"

Frank, I think it's wonderful that you can accommodate people heating things up in your kitchen *while* hosting a cocktail party for 40, but many cannot for various reasons.

I have learned so many things on Chowhound about food, cookbook authors, etiquette, cuisines, cookware and more and appreciate the opportunity. It has made me a better cook, neighbor (great ideas for things to take to others), diner, and guest.

I am here to tell you that athough you were not aware of it, many people would consider it rude, (at best, thoughtless) to for a guest to request kitchen stove access at a cocktail party.

Now, off to find my jacket ... :)

I might be less than thrilled if a guest showed up with apps for 40 that needed a couple of minutes on the stove. Sounds tasty, though.

Party Foods: Which ones are you weary of seeing?

Frank, I think I understand you. Yes, people do serve these things and they can be very tasty! You have a point, though, that those who have always had access to more expensive, elusive ingredients at home and have enjoyed restaurant dining in higher end places may never have eaten these foods.
Generally speaking it is fair to say that you use/eat/wear/live in what is available to you. If you're on a Champagne budget, you'd have cooks or chefs producing accordingly. Beer budgeters naturally choose what they can afford.
Again, I did say GENERALLY, and I realize that there are many who made do with fresh, lovely foods on a shoestring or had millions but lived on cheetos and hot pockets. (Frank, you may have to google these,, tee hee just goofing around) But I think you know what I mean.

No matter what, though, we need to give people room to like what they like. No yucking their yum, as is often said on this site. :)

MacGuffin, what do you think of the 2 step timer Drink Machine? I could get a hand-me-down one for nothing but am unsure of what to use it for beyond icy drinks and smoothies.

One day I'll have the one that makes ice cream!
But first, we'll get the kids through school. :)

That is so helpful, cowboyaree! I'd never have thought of it. I'll do the brown stock as you advise.

Thanks for the lesson! I'll make it soon just because you made me want to. :)

I am a chicken stock snob and always have homemade stock in the freezer. Beef stock, on the other hand, I don't do. Do you have a particular way of doing it that you like?

Love the idea of adding butter after the defatting.

Thanks!

These are delicious and must be served with mashed potatoes. The sauce/gravy is wonderful.

I seem to recall that on one of the jfood short rib threads someone posted a recipe that they thought was just as good but less work, Can't recall who it was, though, and I didn't try it so can't comment.

The active work with jfood's recipe is minimal. Go for it.

Drinks between State & Madison and Union Station?

We'll be near State and Madison and then heading back to the train station. I know there are plenty of great spots if we're willing to take a short ride but I'd rather not.

Not too crowded, not so loud that we can't converse. Around 8 or 9 pm on a weekday.
Doesn't have to be elegant but not too seedy for middle aged folks out celebrating.

Prefer moderate to inexpensive pricing.

Thank you for your help!

mamachef, I feel as you do. I HATE opening those cans. I think it's the difference between those who do and don't like suspense. Maybe?

If you could eat any food/meal and it have no effect on your health, what would it be.

Cheeses w baguette, also butter and preserves for the bread, other cheese plate accompaniments, and I actually would like a simple green salad w/ vinaigrette because I like it with a cheese meal.

Dessert could be strawberry shortcake (or any good white cake) with lots of whipped cream and strawberries, also pastries. Something lemon in there, too. I just ate half of a raspberry Kringle last night. Sad, but true.

May I add croissant because I would love to be able to enjoy them with a free pass.

The main thing is cheese, butter, bread. And my beloved croissant, and desserts. Oink.

Yes, obviously I have much to learn about rieslings! I think generally of Alsatian rieslings as dryer than many German ones. Also, I use "French style" when thinking of rieslings made outside of the Alsace region but with similar qualities. Northwestern United States, for instance, produces some that remind me of my idea of Alsatian wines.
Naturally there are sweet in France and dry in Germany, but my general idea of them has been as I described. Time to get with it, looks like! Thanks for the info.

Try a drier French-style Riesling. Usually less sweet than blue bottle German ones.

We really like Prosecco. Also try Albornio and Vernaccia. All easy, nice whites.
