The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 5: "New York On A Plate") [Spoilers]

That was good. Anne looked at Alex in faux surprise, and Alex did her best not to crack a smile. I also agree about Samuelsson, somebody called his elimination a game-changer.

The constant cookbook plugs are definitely a red flag for me.

Actually Burrell did comment on how she didn't like the way one of Falkner's components looked and then said "I hope it tastes good" to which Alex replied, "No you don't." I'm thinking she and Burrell view Falkner as a serious threat and both want to be the last woman standing.

Absente Absinthe

I know next to nothing about absinthe in general, but I saw this bottle (the one with Van Gogh on the box) and decided what the hell. The little research I did told me since 2009 this brand has used the real wormwood since it was legalized that year in the States and not the Southern wormwood.

Is this true, and do people consider this absinthe a joke? I didn't care for it all that much the first time around but liked it somewhat better on the second try.

Portland Saturday Dinner Help - Hugo's Alternative?

Fore Street is quite lively and not quite as "fussy". And not exactly a huge downgrade since you'd be going from one James Beard award winner to another.

ABC Developing Sitcom Based on Chefs Feniger & Milliken

I enjoyed that movie, just saw it last week! I thought it was interesting that the female lead (Claire Forlani I think?) played an American living in Britain but she is actually a British actress. She did a good job.

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 2: "Take Me Out to the Ballgame") [SPOILERS]

Yeah, I love peanuts straight up. For some reason I hate them in both savory dishes and desserts.

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 2: "Take Me Out to the Ballgame") [SPOILERS]

The judges said they loved Zakarian's dishes but he was near the bottom for skirting the rules. Maybe I'm taking the challenge too literally, but they were charged with making Iron Chef-worthy food from what they found at the ballpark. Zakarian obviously did that. He didn't leave the ballpark to pick up some fois gras and caviar, right? I guess maybe they were just looking for deconstructed chili dogs, deconstructed pretzels and deconstructed 10 dollar beer.

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 1: "Primal: Heat and Meat) [SPOILERS]

That's been gone over ad nauseum. If you don't like him, so be it. He went to high five his sous chefs and they lifted him up on the counter in the heat of the moment. To call it uncivilized is a tad asinine.

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 1: "Primal: Heat and Meat) [SPOILERS]

I remember those battles against Morimoto, too. I do remember Flay complaining about the conditions, but I also recollect him standing in inches of water and getting serious shocks from the stoves. I guess I'm defending him because I love his food and have met him at Bar Americain and he was so amiable and generous with his time, he couldn't have been nicer. Maybe he's mellowed over time, but I know there are a lot of people who vehemently dislike his personality and I can see that. There certainly are numerous threads mentioning such things!

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 1: "Primal: Heat and Meat) [SPOILERS]

Flay has almost 20 more battles than anyone else and still wins 70% of them, a better record than Morimoto and Cora. I think that's pretty good. Batali and Symon have half the amount of battles and boast an 80% record.

The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Episode 1: "Primal: Heat and Meat) [SPOILERS]

I'd say my two favorites are Samuelsson and Chiarello. The former won Top Chef Masters, and the latter made it to the finals ( I forget if they were the same season?) So they both have that under their belts and they are both very accomplished chefs. I liked Zakararian's dish, but still have the memory of him being pummeled mercilessly by Morimoto on Iron Chef a few years back.

I wonder if FN feels like they need to replace Cat Cora with another woman?

Portland - Disappointed at Miyake, but Duckfat was Fabulous (LONG)

That's a shame about Miyake. I went there about 4 months ago at their old, tiny location and had the 7 course menu and everything was perfection. I sincerely hope the move to the new, more upscale digs paired with Miyake branching out with his noodle shop, farm ,etc., doesn't start affecting the quality of his food.

Where to take my foodie boyfriend for his 30th bday?

He was great. Cool and collected, and I loved how he gave so many shout-outs to Portland. He did, however, make it sound like it's 50 below zero with 30 feet of snow every winter......

Rob Evans on Chopped [moved from Northern New England]

Eat Maine mentioned on Facebook yesterday that Hugo's and Duckfat owner Rob Evans will be appearing on "Chopped" next Tuesday night on Food Network. I've always thought he should take on an Iron Chef, but this should be great to watch as well.
