New and affordable BBQ on Rochester Rd in Troy that you will like [DTW]
Meh . I have never had anything BBQ anywhere in Detroit ever that matches what comes out of my Weber . Brisket's for corned beef in these parts . I'll pass . Slow's is mediocre , do it right and do it yourself or don't bother . BBQ is a harsh mistress .
Beer in Michigan
Pretty much Dragonmead for sure . Totally worth the drive . Final Absolution is possibly the best beer I have ever had . I'm sure that means nothing in of itself to you , but trust me , I have had a great many terrific pints of beer in my day . Get some local pizza , settle in , find a designated driver , and prepare to be amazed by what these guys can do .
Detroit - Thinking about Easter
Yes . Yes , you have . Betty Ross II diner on John R in Madison Heights does a great country ham dinner plate , but greens and bar service ? What planet are you from , exactly ? I guess Omara's in Berkley might do a passable ham dinner as part of their Easter buffet , but it ain't gonna be country ham w/ biscuits and red eye gravy . This is Michigan , not Arkansas , after all . Perhaps you should purchase a ham and prepare dinner at home , to ensure you get exactly what you are looking for . Ham hunting around these parts can be a great adventure .
Metro Detroit - decent offerings on EVOO and Sy Ginsberg's Corned Beef
Yes , a small plastic packet of mostly ( I think ) mustard seed and an undefinable dried herb , plus some indeterminate ground stuff . The seasoning was pretty ok , it tasted alright . I added allspice , a bit of fennel seed , a few juniper berries , a smashed clove of garlic , and one quartered onion . As I said , it tasted ok , but the lack of fat , whether marbled in , or just sitting on the top , led me to give this just a meh rating . Not bad at all , just , you know , so so . I like some marbling in my beef . I guess I just love cheap fatty corned beef . Is that so wrong ?
Metro Detroit - decent offerings on EVOO and Sy Ginsberg's Corned Beef
1 - They sometimes have San Pellegrino there , I have a case and a half to prove it .
2 - Just made a Sy Ginsberg CB from there tonight . Meh . Flavors were on , VERY lean . Added a few dry spices ( Allspice , bay leaf , mustard , etc. ) , not bad , not really impressed . Wigleys is way better . My father gets his CB from a meat shop out on Cooley Lake Rd. out in Waterford , definatly CB cured , good , but has a way more pronounced beef flavor , similar to a sirloin roast . I liked it , just not what I think corned beef should taste like . I'll stick with the massive 14 lb'ers from Wigleys @ Eastern Mkt. from now on .
Mae's Diner - Pleasant Ridge, Mi
Where ? Where does $5 get you the aforementioned fare ? My point was , if you get uncomfortable spending $ 10 for breakfast , maybe you should take that $ 5 and buy a dozen eggs ( $1.29 ) a loaf of bread ( $ 1.59 ) and some bacon and potatos and eat breakfast for a week . Thats usually what I do . It will taste better and you can have it whenever you want . But sometimes I like to go out and enjoy the privilege of letting someone cook for me . It costs what it costs . If you don't like it , don't pay it . But quit complaining about it . Restaurants exist to make money , not supply you with ultra cheap food . Gaah you make me nuts ! But keep it up , my man !
Fuji Japanese Buffet [Madison Heights, MI]
Yeah , gotta go ahead and give a full thumbs up to this place . Like any buffet , it's best to get there early ( 11:45 on a Saturday is best ) . If you go to a buffet at 2:30 in the afternoon , don't expect to have the best food experience . Go when it's fresh . I went there about three weeks ago for weekend lunch and had simply the best crawfish I have ever had . And I am a veteran New Orleans doer . Totally worth it , huge asian clientele , I have a Fuju Buffet frequent diner discount card , mmm , steamed tripe ...

Mae's Diner - Pleasant Ridge, Mi
Wow , $ 5 for breakfast ? What do you eat . toast and ice cubes ? Seriously though , if the thought of paying $ 10 for breakfast bums you out , you're probably the kind of person that should make breakfast at home , where your $ 10 goes way farther for better ingredients cooked just the way you like . I like Mae's , they are still finding their way , it's nice that while Sysco is their main supplier , they are working hard to support local suppliers and farms . When you just opened a place , Sysco's prices can be hard to argue with . And the Butter Burgers rock , along with the hand cut fries . They have deep fried Oreos and Faygo Red Pop for crying out loud . It's a nice short walk from my house , so I might be a little biased , but we should all try and support local enterprise . " 2 cents "
BEST BREAKFAST IN BERKLEY MI?
Alex's on 12 Mile does a decent breakfast . A couple notches above the usual coney breakfast fare common to the area .
Ramen or Real BBQ in the Detroit Area?
I see this post is several years old , but Nipponkai in Clawson has been closed for some time . Didn't want another driver to be disappointed upon arrival . Not really a ramen place , but Fuji Buffet on John R in Madison Heights has surprisingly good food .I usually run as fast as I can from local asian buffets as they are with few exceptions frighteningly awful . Not there . Go early to get all the good stuff , we are frequently the only caucasian family in the place , clearly word hasn't really gotten around . ( Or maybe white folks like bad buffet food . I don't . ;)
DTW: Better Made Rainbow Chips
Curse you for showing me this link !!! ;) I could live in one of those party buckets ...
Tried Happy Kabob in Oak Park, MI tonight...
May I ask where this place is exactly ? It sounds close to my house , I'd be willing to give it a shot for lunch . I'm generally not fond of chicken shawarma myself , maybe could try something else .
Cheap but yummy lunch place near Telegraph and Square Lake (metro Detroit)?
Brooklyn Bagel is a New York Bagel knockoff , but they do the whole bagel /deli thing very well , for very reasonable prices . Long Lake and Telegraph next to the Rio Wraps/Pizzapapolis abomination .
Detroit who has the best Fried Chicken and why?
Chicken Shack . End of story . Unless you have a grandma from Alabama making you fried chicken , go to Chicken Shack . Why ? Try it , that's why . Best . Chicken wings . Ever .
Detroit--which would you choose?
The ambivalence towards Small Plates in Royal Oak is for a reason . Not surprising they closed so quickly . The place sucked . Way over priced pedestrian fare brought slowly to your overcrowded noisy table . We went on a grownups night out walking tour of Royal Oak trying appetizers and drinks around town ( fun ! ) , and Small Plates was by far at the bottom of the list . Nothing was under or over cooked or anything , just really boring and expensive for what little bland food you got . I'd rather order the fried everything combo platter from Mr. B's/Woody's/anywhere . I make more interesting food for my children on a Tuesday night .
Downtown Detroit w/Vegetarian choices
How about the new Shangri La on Cass where Twingos used to be ? Was just there for lunch today . We only had dim sum ( which was fabulous ) but didn't have all that many strictly vegetarian other than fried spicy tofu , which was great . They do have an entire separate entree and appetizer menu which had a good looking and fairly sizable vegetarian sections . Service wasn't perfect , ( someone didn't get their bubble tea ) but they were otherwise friendly and knowledgeable , and the food was really great . We had no problem getting a good table at noon on a Saturday , but I have heard from someone who went earlier in the week that they left because the wait was too long . Sometimes a long wait is a good sign .
Best Prime Rib in Metro Detroit?
Oxford Inn , Royal Oak . Main St. just across from Holiday Market .
Real Bacon [Upper Peninsula]
I'm sure it's very good , it's just in the U.S. bacon is made from pork belly , not loin , no matter what is attached . That's all I'm saying . It does indeed look very tasty and I would love to eat me some .
Real Bacon [Upper Peninsula]
That looks like not bacon at all but cured pork loin . There is a big difference .Properly brined and smoked pork loin is not necessarily Canadian bacon . That looks cured and maybe cold smoked . It looks delicious , but I have not seen anything like it around here . Maybe at the Polish Market @ 15 and Dequindre in Troy . That place is a shrine to cured and smoked pork .
Detroits best Pizza- Free Press
Tomatoes is the best , Supinos is a real close runnerup , Green Lantern is the best old school American pizza around , but the Ferndale Rosie's makes an excellent coal fired pie ., they are a little generous with all their great toppings , sometimes less is more . Amici's is very good too . I am not a fan of the greasy deep dish Detroit style Loui's or Buddy's pie , it makes my stomach hurt . Too fat laden for me . Fried dough kinda makes me want to barf .
Pizza recommendations for Lansing/MSU area
My inlaws live in E. Lansing and swear by Sir Pizza . I heard about it for years and finally we got some carry out a while back . The crust was nicely thin and well browned , the pepperoni was , curiously , ground up like loose sausage . The cheese was acceptable , sauce bland canned red stuff . They slice their pies up in about 4" squares ( I hate that for no good reason ) , and I found it overall bland and kinda tasteless . The rest of the table devoured it and claimed to think it was great , so maybe it was just me . Also , many years ago right downtown practically on campus was a place called Bilbo Baggins ( which name I also hated , for obvious reasons ) that did a good kitchen sink pie that was pretty darn good if the thick crust is your thing . It is not my thing , but all the veggie toppings were fresh , not canned , and the sauce was zesty and rich , cheese real mozzarella . That was many years ago , however . Other than that , I have not found any really good food in the greater Lansing area . Sad , really .
Best Bagels in Metro Detroit?
New York Bagel in Ferndale-hands down . Einsteins and such , gross , thats not a bagel . The bagels from NYB are better than many I have had in New York itself . A Mini ham on a salted with lettuce tomato and mustard- perfection . When the bagel is still warm from the oven and the ham and toppings are cold from the fridge, oh man , I shudder with delight just thinking about it . I now know where I am stopping on my way to the Royal Oak farmers market tomorrow morning . Now Zingermans , feh . I can take it or leave it .
Middle Eastern in Dearborn Area
Al Ajami is great , was just there last weekend , can't wait to go back . A new Dearborn fav ...
Where to buy Lyle's Golden Syrup in the Detroit area?
Holiday Market . My store used to carry it . Ah memories ( and a mountain of debt) , sniffle ...
U-pick farms in Southeast Michigan
Long Family Farm 248-360-3774 , Commerce& Bogie Lake Rd area , upick berries and such . A nice fall hay ride pick your own pumpkin kind of place . Also , the best asparagus in the area when in season , I think it may be too late for any now , but their corn is coming...
Tomatoes in Detroit
With this damn cool weather we may not see good local tomatos until August ... I've had a few sweet 100's but thats it so far .
The Best Coney in Detroit area
Hippo's has hands down the best dogs in Detroit . As much as it pains me to say that , I am after all a native metro Detroiter and a Coney lover but a great Chicago dog beats a great Coney every time , the best Coney I have had recently was at Comet Burger in Royal Oak . The sliders are serviceable , the fries acceptable , but my God those two unadulterated Coneys were a thing of beauty . Perfectly seasoned , perfectly spiced , no extra mustard or hot sauce or salt needed . A real surprise , and well worth the walk . Highly recommended .
Coney's in Detroit; a question
No . No , no , no . A coney can , and should , be eaten by hand . The thing is , you must designate a messy coney hand and a clean drink and fries hand . I use my left hand to lift the coney to mouth , and put the fork in my right hand to assist the plate to mouth transfer , kinda like a forklift . This lets one hand ( the left ) get all gooey and messy , while the other ( right ) hand is free to sip Redpop and dip fries in salty ketchup . Finish dogs , lick fingers , leave tip , ans Bob's yer uncle .
goat [Detroit Suburbs]
Nope , not Agrusa . I just googleearthed it . It's Wattles and Dequindre , South east corner . Sorry about that .
Pinconning Cheese Company [Michigan]
Gotta go to Wilson's Cheese Shoppe . It's the one with the giant mouse on the roof . Every other Thursday ( not sure if it's the 1st and 3rd or the 2nd and 4th ) the mild colby is " squeaky " , i.e. it is so fresh it makes your teeth squeak when you chew it . Fabulous . Other than that day or so , it's just cheese . Gotta give a shout out for the fresh smoked fish in those parts , too . Smoked sable and whitefish for like $ 5.99 a pound ? Come on .
