Where is your favorite place for fried rice in San Diego?

No, I've never been to Liang's, I will eventually. Is that a dish you like there ?

Where is your favorite place for fried rice in San Diego?

I love the wontons in chili oil sauce at FuAn Garden. I tried to recreate it at home with disappointing results. I've been eating there a lot lately, think it might be as good as Spicy City.

I like the spicy fried rice at Sab E Lee (I order it with beef and heat level 3).

Pizzeria Mozza (Seaport Village)

No, he was a Holiday Inn franchisee and the CEO of Residence Inn at the time he (regrettably) got into the pizza business. (this wiki page should say founded in Topeka, KS not Kansas City, MO)

Pizzeria Mozza (Seaport Village)

I know a guy who thought Chuck E Cheese was just fine for kids. He bought Chuck E. in 1984 and merged it with the Showbiz Pizza Place chain he started in 1980. He was also my dad.

Are you a regular?

Just one regular place. A small family-run americanized-Chinese restaurant that is in a quiet suburb, and not only do I like it for the food, but because it is quiet (not busy) in the evening so I can have converstations with friends, or just be alone in my thoughts when I dine alone. I don't feel as relaxed in any other restaurant.

The owners don't say much because english isn't their first language, but the daughter who is now in college is very friendly. When I quit going for awhile after moving out of the suburbs, the mother mentioned "where have you been, did you move ?". It was kind of comforting knowing that I was missed.

Foodwise, I never mention the restaurant on chowhound.com because it wouldn't wow anyone or come close to a "best"...but sometimes dining isnt just about the food.

Spicy House was one of my favorites. I got there tonight and it had a Grand Opening sign- new owners, staff, and menu. I was not impressed with the food.

new Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives

Tonight they did a new episode with all San Diego locations.

However, it was sort of a cop-out because they went to two restaurants they have done before, Hodad's and Pizzeria Luigi (this time the el cajon blvd location). Which is bad for me because that is my favorite pizza location and now it probably just got more crowded. Hodad's showed off their Guido Burger: pastrami, brown mustard, carmelized onions, burger patty, pickles, ketchup.

The OB Noodle House was the best thing on the show. Garlic Wings, Pho, and their House Special Fried Rice. It all looked very good.

Old Town rec

I suggest Casa Guadalajara. Cafe Coyote is not a bad choice.

I would skip Old Town Mexican Cafe- long waits and poor food.

Reintroducing Fish

I really like Trader Joes Breaded Cod filets.

Cod or sole are great fish to start with and easy to cook. Adding lemon and butter together are good on almost any fish.

Anything new/good in Breckenridge?

Hearthstone. I ate there two summers ago and the food and service were excellent, in a charming Victorian building.

I used to eat in the same restaurant in the 70's and 80's when it was a French restaurant.

Which brands are you loyal to?

Tejava Tea (bottled iced tea..no flavorings just tea)
Blue Diamond Almonds
Crown Prince sardines in olive oil- their sardines now come in BPA-free cans BTW. That is a good business decision, they earned my future loyalty.
A-1 steak sauce
Pico Pica hot sauce
Ore-Ida steak fries and frozen potatoes
Crystal Geyser water
Imagine organic low-sodium vegetable broth

What is the best damn thing you've eaten in SD?

One evening at Sadaf (gaslamp), my girlfriend and I had adas polo (basmati rice, lentils, dates, raisins, saffron). By the time we got on the road back to Scripps Ranch we were both on a crazy euphoric high that lasted for hours, we were laughing and singing "Mellow Yellow" by Donovan.

We didn't drink alcohol so we're convinced it had to be the saffron. I'm just glad we didn't get pulled over by the police. It would be tough to explain, "you see officer, we ordered some rice and......."

Corn on Pizza??

The Showbiz Pizza chain (what is now called Chuck E Cheese) had corn on one of their pizzas (the Royal) starting in 1980.

good ethnic eats

Persian- Sadaf (gaslamp). Darband 5th Avenue (near downtown).

Thai- Sab-E-Lee, linda vista or rancho penasquitos locations. Siam Nara- (mira mesa).

I too think Phuong Trang is a good because they have a wide variety of dishes.

Chinese- Spicy House or Spicy City. If you go to Spicy City prepare for a wait at peak hours, it's very popular.
