Boston chowhound needs help with San Diego rec's

hi pickypicky,

Yes I have been but not in a while. The Lodge has a big one once a year outside which is fantastic.
There are several of these types of events at differnet restaurants throughout the county as well. The San Diego Brewers Guild (google search) has all the events and pairings around town. Even the restaurant at the Zoo (cant remember name) has pairings sometimes.

Sushi Deli 1- Avoid this place!!

Well you learned what Sushi Deli is about the hard way unfortunately. Its cheap and caters to those who value quantity over quality. Its great when you are drunk or at least have a palette that that cannot discern between a Filet o Fish from McDonalds and a Big Mac. Way overrated.

Josh made some great points and probably the most efficient ones as the 30th street corridor packs a nice punch of variety all within a short distance.
In essence, what we lack in polish we make up for in some of the simpler things.
Fish tacos, shrimp burritos, farmers markets etc.
There are some great recommends here for nicer restaurants in La Jolla and such, but for as great as they are, you would only be comparing the food to at least several other restaurants in BOS.

We are definitely growing into a beer mecca. I for one LOVE the beer here (hence the "hopheadsd" name). If you felt like going for a drive, the Stone Bistro in Escondido is pretty amazing. For me at least, any friends I have from back east coming here that love beer, would certainly admire that choice as a destination.

have fun

NYC foodies relocated to SD. Looking for good suggestions

Thats a tough one. Assuming you mean romantic dinner for an anniversary everyone gave some great ideas.
You could drive out a bit to the Rancho Bernardo Inn, the restaurant is called El Bizcocho and is excellent. I am not sure, but Bertrand at Mister A's was very good when I went a couple of years ago. Not sure how it is now. You get nice view of the bay and our baby city skyline. Still pretty nonetheless.

Its really tough to nail down one place though as you can have a mix or views and food or just food etc etc. Have fun. While you are here, get Mexican food. I am from Manhattan and there is nowhere in the city that I have found that can compare to SD's Mex scene. I suggest Rana's in Spring Valley (20min drive from downtown)

San Diego Chinese - Dim Sum & Authentic Chinese

Yes I agree. I suppose there really isnt a proper dim sum restaurant in town that I am aware of that fits all descriptions so far.

Perhaps its time we need one :)

San Diego Chinese - Dim Sum & Authentic Chinese

I am not certain what you meany by 'typical' as dumplings, bao, potstickers are very much part of a dim sum menu. There are definitely more robust dim sum menus out there, I just havent found many as good at what Dumplin Inn serves.

Restaurants serving a variety of wild game?

AR Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines and El Bizcocho at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. However keep in mind, that wild game can be seasonal so plan accordingly and check the menu changes often.

San Diego Chinese - Dim Sum & Authentic Chinese

I am surprised no one mentioned, besides the more obvious in Kearny Mesa, The Dumpling Inn.
Hands down the most authentic and legit dim sum in SD. The place is the size of a shoebox and the lines out the door on weekend mornings. Its in a tiny strip mall next to Emerald.

Out of towner planning a bachelor party for a friend - any place that is both lively and meets a chowhounder's standards

This place is a bit of a hipster joint but can be fun. Its kind of like the Regal Beagle from Threes Co.

Hey guys need best Fish & Chips in San Diego?

I live right near this place and have eaten there many times. Its legit. If the fish n chips dont tickle your fancy, there is always Coops BBQ. Easily the best WEst Texas Style I have in San Diego and Southern California.
