Guanciale in Toronto

Not that this will help the original poster, but this is the first google result when you search "guanciale toronto", so I figured I would add to this thread to help anyone googling that search term.

I picked up some guanciale at Maselli's on Danforth yesterday. They had a bunch of them on hand, and didn't require any special order. It was nice and cheap too - $14.99/kilo. I got a good sized chunk for $5.50, cheaper than a tiny chunk of pancetta from Loblaws et al.

coca tea

The tea is decocainized, but it still contains trace amounts (think non-alcoholic beer). It has a taste similar to yerba mate, and gives a similar energy boost.

Jamaican Food

A place that I visit frequently is Royal Caribbean Cafe, which is at 1127 St Clair W, just east of Dufferin. The curry goat is great, and the chef is very friendly and accommodating.

Mother's Dumplings - another rave review

I am surprised at the bad reviews. I went last weekend (Saturday lunch) with my parents and we were very impressed.

They were out of one of the dumplings that we ordered, but we chose another from the menu. We had the chive and pork (boiled) and the shrimp, pork and melon. We got an order of da lu, and a few appetizers with rice. We left unable to finish our meal and extremely satisfied. I would definitely recommend the da lu.. It was very flavourful, hearty and fresh.

I went to U of T Scarborough. It is not really brunch, but one of the staples for students was Federicks, and Indian-Chinese restaurant at Ellesmere and Bellamy.

The atmosphere is non-existent, but the food is cheap and decent, so it is perfect for students. I haven't been back in years, so perhaps someone else can weigh in as to the quality now..

Rome recommended food stops [moved from Ontario board]

To be honest, I can't recall any particular restaurant. This is partly because I didn't plan any of our meals, and partly because wine was very cheap. That being said, I can offer general tips. I made a game for myself to try and find a bad meal. I succeeded only once, and it was shawarma, so I don't think that counts.

Don't eat in the tourist areas.. Food in tourist areas is generally good, but very pricey. Walk 10 minutes outside of the tourist areas and look down side streets.. This is where you will find the family restaurants. You didn't mention how you are getting there. If you are driving within Italy, definitely make a foodstop at the Autogrills. They are little convenience stores/cafes alongside the Autoroute that area surprisingly good.

Try and learn a little bit of Italian. I did, and it went a long way as to how I was treated by people.

Try the Roman specialties! The cuisine really does vary depending upon where you are, and as you can see, it is hard to find regional Italian food in Toronto. The dishes in my original post are a good start, but check out this website for a great list: http://www.liveinrome.com/cuisine.htm

Guyanese Style Chinese restaurants in the GTA?

There is a Guyanese-Chinese place in a strip mall on the south side of Eglinton, a few blocks east of Dufferin. I haven't tried it, but I would be interested to hear if anyone has.

There is also a really good Vietnamese place just next door if you get cold feet at the last minute.

Good non-chain coffee in Financial District

Does it exist? I am sick to death of Timmy's, and I can't afford Starbucks/Second Cup. I am just looking for some no-frills, reasonably priced, good coffee.. The closer to King & York, the better!

Best Portuguese restaurant in Toronto, please

As mentioned, you should try a cheap Churresqueria too. Costa Verde has the best chicken, IMHO, and it is the cheapest that I have found.. I have only had the takeout, I have not eaten in.

Also, for a cheap sit-down restaurant, try Bairrada (http://www.bairrada.ca/). They've got a bunch of locations, and the food here is very good too.

Cheap Lunch Alert - Saveur de Saigon

A new Vietnamese restaurant called Saveur de Saigon opened up in the Richmond Adelaide Centre in the PATH, right beside Sandwich World. It seems to offer, Bun Thit Nuong, Vietnamese Subs, and some unimpressive-looking non-vietnamese food.

I went today, and had Bun Thit Nuong for lunch. It was pre-made, and in a plastic container, so the spring rolls were a little soggy, but aside from that it was delicious. To top it off, it only cost me $4.23 after taxes, and was loads better than Sandwich World. I am going to have to go back this week and try one of the sandwiches.

They have a sign advertising pho starting in the fall!

Your best bet is the mom and pop convenience stores. I know of one specifically near me that carries it. It is located on Eglinton Ave W, on the South side, just a few blocks West of the Allen. Sorry I don't have a name for you, but it is right on a corner across from a gas station. I think the cross street might be Winona

I haven't had the Portuguese style, but have seen it. It is made with (what appears to be) white kidney beans, as opposed to the black beans in the Brazilian incarnation. It also looks to have more vegetables in it.

Caynon Creek on Front Street, Toronto: TERRIBLE

As others have said, Canyon Creek is a pretty poor measure of the food in Toronto as a whole.. By your logic, I could say that nowhere in the US has good food based on a poor experience at IHOP.

Read through this board for advice in the future, and to avoid making the same mistake again.

I seem to be in the minority regarding Ten Feet Tall. Perhaps I owe them another chance. I've only been once, and I ordered blackened catfish, which was OK, but I was kind of thrown of when I saw the same thing pre-made at Loblaws.

I used to live in this area, and there are a few places to eat. I would caution against Ten Feet Tall (mentioned above) for food, as when I went there the food was nothing inspiring and overpriced.

Agree with Little India, Sarah's (again for beer, not food), 3's company.

If you like Carribean or Trini food, there is a place called D&D Trini Style on the North side of Gerrard, just west of Greenwood. They have amazing doubles, and their goat roti is very good too.

You are also not to far from the Danforth. A few restaurants there, obviously.
