I read somewhere that the plastic lining inside cans of Muir Glen tomatoes have BPA in them... can anyone confirm or deny this with proof?

How do I clean a pasta machine?

No, there was also dried pasta dough. The machine smells like pasta. The orange gunk was oily... I assumed it was some kind of rust mixed with the lubricant. But I could be wrong.

How do I clean a pasta machine?

I picked up a used Atlas pasta machine at a garage sale, but there's dried bits of pasta dough (i'm hoping that's what they are) and orange-colored gunk all in between the slots of the noodle cutter.

I took out the screws on the sides but nothing opened up... so i went through with a q-tip and tried cleaning in between the slits but it seems impossible.

Any tips?

Kitchenaid Diamond Blender better than Vitamix??

Last night while flipping through channels I caught the last few seconds of a commercial for the "Kitchenaid Diamond Blender," and saw them comparing it to a Vitamix.

Does anyone have any experience with this blender? Is it better than a Vitamix? (I tried Google-ing comparison reviews but there doesn't seem to be any.)

I'm starting to get fed up with my Vitamix because it never blends anything correctly. Things always get jammed and the stupid stick doesn't help. I end up over-saturating whatever it was I was blending, with more liquid, just to help it blend. Bah. And nothing that's on the video it comes with, like making your own peanut butter, actually works. It just chokes up until you add some kind of liquid, which goes against what they promote (it using the natural oils in the nuts to grind itself into a butter). Worst $500 ever spent.

Sun Dried Tomatoes in Olive Oil went bad in my fridge?

I love Mezzetta sun dried tomatoes in olive oil, and I refrigerated them immediately after opening (as it says to do on the jar) but it looks like something went wrong.

The oil is still liquid-y, however, there are little solidified dots/beads/strands floating in there.

Is this mold or bacteria? This is the second jar I've bought that has done this. (I threw the first one out, assuming it was just old or something... but this jar is brand new. It looks like an science experiment in there.)

Albertsons/Ralphs/Vons only carry really nasty, fake, overly processed lunch meat.

When I search for "deli" on places like Yelp, all I find are sandwich shops... they don't sell lunch meat.

Any ideas?? Anyone?

Boos cutting board with a big split/crack in it - Still OK to use?

I worked at a kitchen supply store for awhile, and they had a few Boos cutting boards in the back room, which had been returned by customers because they were flawed.

The one I got to take home has a fairly big split/crack on the edge, that goes into the board about 1 1/2 inches.

Is it still safe to use this cutting board? Or should I throw it away?

Preserved lemons question - Texture slimy?

About three weeks ago, I went ahead and made preserved lemons using Meyer lemons and Kosher salt (also, I used a glass jar with a rubber seal).

I kept it in a dark/cool place (hallway closet) and then after 3 weeks I moved the jar to the fridge.

But the texture of them is... slimy. The salty lemon juice that's floating around in there is thick.

Did I do something wrong?

I have never had preserved lemons before, but have always wanted to try them. I looked through dozens of recipes (and eventually went with this one: http://mjskitchen.com/2011/08/preserv...

)

So, again, the liquid in my jar is thick (almost syrupy) and the lemons themselves feel slimy. There are no offense odors though, and nothing is discolored.

Is this all normal?

Calphalon Non-stick cookware pans are NOT dishwasher safe - WHY?

I know not to put my Calphalon non-stick pots and pans in the dishwasher, but does anyone have a reason WHY?

Is it because of the temperature of the water?

The harshness of the soap?

Something to do with the handles?

It says it can tolerate heat up to 700 degrees. Why cant they go in the dishwasher??
