Recent trip to Miami

Highlights of a great eclectic Miami viisit .

11th Street Diner: Retro Diner on Miami beach with great Angus burgers etc. etc. etc.

Michaels Genuine Food and Drink: Hip, hot spot in Design District: Amazing whole roasted chicken,
Great Seviche, Fresh oysters, Remarkable BLT Salad, Very good deconstructed Meyer lemon pie in a jar (albeit overpriced at $11).

Garcias: Cuban down home fish place on the Miami River and I mean ON the river. Terrific fresh fish and delicious Cuban sides. Great river and people watching. Terrible parking.

Palacio de los jugos: Red Road and Flagler. Cuban Fruit and juice palace with home style Cuban cooking. We were the only Gringos and it was packed on a rainy afternoon. Don't miss the half gallons of fresh fruit juice like uanamana or whole coconut with a straw, fried fish, paella, Very inexpensive.

Villa Habana: One my my favorite old standbys on Coral Way for Great cheap Cuban food like Ropa Vieja with Excellent black beans, Plantanos Madurasand Tres Leches. Forget Versailles except for coffee and postres this is the place.

Sakura: One of the best sushi spots in Miami at Red and Bird Road, an institution. We had to wait for 40 minutes at 9:30 PM for a table.Well worth the wait. Fantastic fresh fish, delicious Wakame salad, tempura and shrimp dumplings. Way cheaper than most Miami sushi.

John Martins: Miracle Mile Irish pub with outstanding pub fare, Beef stew with stout, Corned beef and cabbage, White tablecloth room or bar room with music. Solid affordable fare.

Key Largo chow

We'll be in Key Largo next week. Can anyone recommend a place we shouldn't miss.

Budai, ABQ: authentic Chinese/Taiwanese, and it's AWESOME

We did go last night. But unfortunately we arrived at 8:20, and after a long wait at the reception desk, the gracious hostess explained, they were short staffed and the kitchen was backed up, and that she could seat us but it would be 20 minutes before she could take our order. My wife was ravenous and wanted out. I asked to see a to go menu, and off we went to Saigon, which is one of the best Vietnamese in town, which also has a very friendly staff as well. The menu at Budai looked great and I'll be back very soon.

Albuquerque - All Stars?

I pass by there every Monday night about 10 PM (often hungry) There are never any cars and I've always wondered if the food was good. Thanks, I'll check it out.
There is another phantom nighttime taco truck on Zuni a few blocks West of Luisiana.

Albuquerque - All Stars?

I guess I'm more out of touch than I thought. I can't think of any place with an awesome taco at midnight. Just getting and something I'd care to eat...excluding Frontier (which doesn't really have an awesome taco)... after 10 PM is a challenge. Any ideas for late night dining I've missed?. Many Thanks.

Chef's Table or Tasting Menu in Santa Fe?

We had a wonderful lobster tasting menu at La Posada several years ago. They are not that frequent, but it's ballon fiesta time... maybe they'll have a special tasting dinner.

Looking for Good Food between ABQ and Cuba

Ditto: Long GORGEOUS deserted stretch from Brenalillo to Cuba. The Range is your best bet. Abuelitas also in Bernalillo , might work. (caveat: I have not been to Abuelitas in years).

Jennifer james would be my choice. Local foods but not New Mexican cuisine.

Airport to Santa Fe, Where to Lunch?

Blakes underwhelms me. I don't get the appeal. Barelas Coffee House on 4th Street near Bridge, not far from airport would be a great ABQ choice.

But Bernalillo is only 15 miles out . There is an excellent choice in Brenallillo on the main drag. It's called The Range Cafe.

Fine Dining in Santa Fe? Recent experiences wanted!

Full disclosure, I ran into a friend who will be the new wine steward at The Revamped Il Nido in Tesuque (he owners of Steaksmith are opening it this week I think). My friend had very nice things to say, I'm just saying why wouldn't he.... But he's been around and highly recommended. So...I will check it out when I go up to the opera next month and report back.

New Mexico Retreat: Santa Fe, Abiquiu, and Ojo Caliente

Ghost Ranch food is not really a contender. It's very reminiscent of school lunches. They have improved slightly over the years but nothing commends it. I'm not sure you can just pop in for lunch, since there are various conferences (all going on at the same time during the summer and fall), when I've been there for conferences, all the chairs were full.

Single night in Albuquerque - where to eat?

Hate to be negative, but service is so bad and items are so often not on the menu, at so many places here in town, I wouldn't be ever going out to eat, if I let that get in the way. As it is, I don't go out that often these days. The worst offender for running out is Flying Squirrel or is it Star? My wife likes it because of the decor and convenience... so we go. They are often out of the soup and at least three items. Besides they're overpriced and the food is not that good. There are very few places here with outstanding decor. It's not part of the equation, like in New York, where even a funky little place tries very hard to be clever in decor and concept etc.

Single night in Albuquerque - where to eat?

We went to Lucia a few weeks ago and I would recommend it. Nice build out, seems very "un" New Mexican. Service was dreadful (don't get me started). We shared the oysters, mushroom appetizer and garlic shrimp (which was the best app). It was a slow Wed night and they were out of beets for the beet salad and manchego crisps for the soup and several other items I can't remember. So we ordered the caesar salad, it was just average. My wife liked the flatbread pizza Farina (next to the Artichoke on Central) offers a better pizza on all levels and I think they are open on Sunday night as well. The scallop and sugared shrimp entree was redundant but good. Nothing on the limited menu wowed me or even had me thinking, "I'd really love to try that", but everything was quite good. There is a fun roof top space for drinks before or after dinner.

Vernon's Steak House might be open on Sunday.

Joseph's Table RIP?

A friend told me Joseph's Table in Taos closed. I Googled and found a bit (see link) in the Taos paper warning that May 1st might be the last night. Anyone know anything? We were about to go up for the weekend, now maybe not.

Back from SF getaway - had some amazing food - reviews inside!

Glad to hear you had a nice trip. Here's a possible answer to your question about the marg. If one travels from sea level to Santa Fe, the effect of alcohol is heightened by the altitude.

I catered a party at Hyde State Park, up near the ski basin and several big dudes (as in 6'3") from Michigan had to lay down on the stone slabs, after just a few drinks.

Ruidoso Chow

Deb, I missed Cafe Rio... called Greenhouse Cafe, to no avail...phone disconnected. It's really tough out there, in the middle of nowhere New Mexico.

Ruidoso Chow

I just got back from Ruidoso. To answer my own question. No, the food is not alright at Inn of the Mountain Gods.Typical hotel fare at Wendells: Salty onion soup, overcooked Filet, bottled dressing, lavender creme brulee with no real brulee. The gigantic multi station mediocre buffet featured instant "Yukon Gold" potatoes, way salty entrees, overcooked vegetables and tons of dessert options.) I wound up eating salad and peel your own shrimp and twol just alright desserts.

The ONE really bright spot in town was a lunch at Maison on Suddreth Drive. It was opened by the same couple that had, the long since closed Morsels. I enjoyed an outstanding chunky tomato soup, Calamari Po Boy sandwich with aoli (perfectly light and delicious) served with hand cut french fries and baby greens with a tangy dressing. I finished with tasty bengiets with chocolate sauce. I hope folks will support this place. There were only four people there, the whole time. The owners are going to open a street food place in this summer.

Ask for Victor at customer service and he'll often help you out. There was no fresh Thai basil today and after speaking to Victor. Like a magic... it appeared.

Ruidoso Chow

I've got a gig in Ruidosos for three days and will be staying at the Inn of the Mountain Gods.
Is the food alright there? and where can I get good chow in town or Lincoln? Most of the places I remember from five years ago are gone. Many Thanks.

I teach cooking classes at Ta Lin and can tell you that Victor and his crew are excellent at ordering anything they don't carry. They've ordered foods, flowers, wines and even equipment and hard goods for me and my students. If they don't have it they'll try their best to get it for you.

Onions turning green

My onions turned green (sort of a light green, but definatly green). I was in the middle of a saute of onions, garlic (peeled garlic from Sunflower Market ) with EVOO, salt and pepper. I never had any thing like this happen before. Any Ideas??? I covered the large saute pan with a cheap aluminum serving tray, could that be the cause? Strange...
