GREAT Dinner at Michael in Winnetka!

Went to michael the other night...thought the food was unbelievably good. Have never been before and been meaning to go and it didnt disappoint. Did the 7 course tasting menu which I think is a steal for $75. Everything was great, only problem I had was the service in terms of food coming out of the kitchen started out really slow...one of my all time pet peaves. First 2 courses probably took 50 min to come out, after that hiccup, each course was about 12-15 min, much more satisfactory. Told my wife that luckily those first 2 courses were fantastic since I was pretty upset that it was so slow. Needless to say, afterward we both thought that it was one of the better meals we've had in a long time ( and we have eaten at all the "happening" spots in the city) and I think if the restaurant was in the city instead of the burbs it would get much more praise for the cuisine and be much more expensive I will definitely be going back, its a true gem in the north suburbs for those of us who live up here and would for sure be a good destination spot for those in the city. Have to agree with nsxtasy..GO!!!

L'Atelier vs E by Jose Andres

ate at both on my most recent visit....would definitely go with E...ate that the first night and all thru dinner the next night at L'Atelier kept on comparing saying it just wasnt as good as the previous night..dont get me wrong, they are both fantastic..but E is a much more "fun" experience IMO

Ruxbin

I am actually tempted to not even write anything about my visit to Ruxbin this weekend, but I found the meal so good I really feel like I have too. Yes, the wait is crazy...we arrived at 510 and they open at 530 to find a good 30 or so people in line already, and yes there isnt really any place to hang out unless you can squeeze into the "waiting" area...but......o my, the food was outstanding. I was at Avenues the night before and honestly was concerned I wouldnt find the meal as good as people have said since the Avenues meal was outstanding, well my meal at Ruxbin was just as impressive. Completely different atmosphere but the food was just as well executed. As i said, we arrived 20 minutes before the place opened and just missed the first seating so had to wait upstairs, which isnt too bad because its byo and they are great about letting you start imbibing if you like. After being seated we started with 3 appetizers...the flatbread, the calamari, and the pork belly salad....all 3 were great, the calamari had some spice to it, almost like it was cooked with siracha. entrees were the halibut and the pork tenderloin. honestly the best piece of pork I have ever had. both were recommended by our server, who was great as well. All in all a great meal. I cant rave enough about the meal here. the caveat is that it is extremely small and you will wait to be seated if this weekend was any indicator. the cost compared to other places in the city make this place a steal and the quality is top notch.

3 day trip to Chicago for young couple

nsxtasy's points are valid with Avec, but I think that the pros far outweigh the cons for them. If you go early enough the wait wont be that long and imo the communal tables make it a bit fun. the food is outstanding..ive never had a bad meal there. they will also take you number so you can go somewhere to have a drink if the bar is too crowded, i would recommend Sepia, its across the street and has a nice bar

Longman & Eagle Report - Oversalted and Overseasoned

I believe I wrote something like this before about not being too impressed with the meal I had there as well. Mine was a brunch though, but it didnt really make me want to go back for a dinner...sorry you had a bad experience...always crummy when you look forward to something and it is way below expectations

Struggling with two dinner choices

I also had a rather forgettable dinner at Twist sometime back, the food was mediocre and ambiance seemed alittle cheesy, I would drop them from the list, you have others on there that would be much better

Opinions/Suggestions on My Restaurant Line-Up?

Last time i was there I had 2 memorable dinners, the first was at e` in the cosmopolitan which has been well talked about and was fantastic, the other was at Robuchon...Robuchon was not that great, which is what made it memorable because of the cost associated with it vs the expecations. I found Robuchon to be generally fine taste wise, but thought the service was mediocre and the atmosphere was stuffy at best....I realize that my opinion on that may be somewhat of the minority and perhaps they had an off night, but I would have preferred someplace else for the money. (If you do go though ask for the limo service there, they bring you in the back Mansion area of the MGM..that was cool)

Best Tasting Menu in Chicago

I went to iNG and did the chef's 2 hour menu or whatever it is they call it..I assume that is the equivalent of their tasting menu.....I found it rather "blah", not bad, just not outstanding, I personally felt the best thing there was the "breakfast" desert.

Avenues (Chef's Bar)

I have reservations for Avenues mid august do you think it would be possible to get the chefs table instead with such late notice? was it full when you went?

NYC Hound Coming Back to Chicago for ~48 hours in August

iNG was somewhat of a disappointment when i was there last. We did the 2 hour tasting and honestly the best part was the desert...I would only go back for that, and even then I think it might have only been cause it was the "breakfast" desert and I honestly found it quite interesting visually....with the other places the OP listed i wouldnt substitute if for any the ones listed already

A Lengthy Account of Eleven Madison Park

After just dining there earlier this week I concur with everything the OP has said, we had slightly different courses but that is mostly due to the fact that OP experience was a month ago. We were not offered the Kitchen tour in the usual spot (right after the savory courses), which I knew from other posts was not given to everyone. It did seem like anyone who was there for a "special " occasion was offered it though. However, we were offered it after i requested a copy of the menu for the night. Our server, who was great btw, offered the tour while he printed it out. We were then whisked away and served the nitro cocktail at the very end of our meal. Thought everything was great, and with the tour of the kitchen done at the very end I thought it resulted in a nice finale...along with the outstanding granola
