Karelian Pies
yeah, sorry. it's a football shaped rye flatbread type thing filled with a rice porridge. Heat them up and serve with butter or a thin slice of cheese.
It seemed to me that, in Helsinki, the karelian pie to a Finn was like a bagel to a NY'er.

Karelian Pies
heard from a Finnish friend the other day, which got me remembering eating Karelian pies while I was visiting in Helsinki some years ago.
Does anyone sell these in NYC? I did a search on here but came up empty.

Telepan: Eating at the Bar?
Eating at the bar is fine. Plenty of space, comfy chairs, you'll have a great experience. I did the 4 course meal at the bar last Friday, with some friends, we all mixed and shared, so I got a taste of a lot of stuff. I love the smoked trout appetizer, we also had the egg and the ham, both were great. I had the pirogie for the mid course, it was good, but I'd try something else next time. I had the chicken, and my friend had the trout, for the entree. Both wonderful. And the cheese platter for desert, though my friends were tight with Bill Telepan, who sent out all of the deserts ... the smores thing was pretty good, considering I don't have a sweet tooth.

odd request: Wheetabix? on the UWS
Some friends from the UK will be staying in my apartment for a week, with baby (I'll be gone) and they've asked if there's any place to buy Wheetabix. Apartment is at 69th & Broadway, so any grocer within walking distance ... any ideas? Does Fairway have it?

date #2, UES near 2nd Ave/88th
beyoglu was the choice ... and it was great. We got a table ... outside ... probably the quietest spot in the restaurant. Bottle of red, the caviar roe, grilled octopus, an appetizer special (little meat filled dumplings in a yogurt sauce, and the donner kabob. Food was great, conversation was great as well.
And I've got plenty of rec's on this thread for date #3.

lots of great suggestions. Thanks. Also I see this thread made the Eater board wrap. Leaning towards Beyoglu or Flex Mussels.
"Not too fancy" refers to the venue, not the price. Went to some Italian place on Amsterdam last week with some friends, around 81st or 82nd ... the food was great but it just disappeared into the conversation ... but I would have noticed if it was not good. A fava bean side was the winner of the night. Gotta see if I can find the name. Anyhow, looking for a place like that, where the food is good, but the venue is nice and the noise level isn't insane.

any other thoughts? I'm open to Turkish, will have to see if she is.

date #2, UES near 2nd Ave/88th
First date was at Cavatappo Wine Bar, 2nd b/w 89th & 90th. Went well, but the venue was very small, we sat on stools near the door ... no back to the stools ... I'm old.
I'm looking for something that will facilitate conversation. Not too fancy ... neighborhood type place would be good. Keep it in her neighborhood. Cuisine isn't too important ... food should be good but not like we have to pay attention to it and savor it.
whadaya think? This will be Friday night.

Dining in a Wine Cellar?
I've eaten there a few times, but never in the downstairs room. But I've been down there, I sometimes work for a farmer and help him with deliveries, and you have to navigate that room to get to the fridge. Always had excellent food at Il Buco. Here's a couple of pics.

I've seen them at the Farmer's Market by me (Lincoln Center); would imagine that one of the farmers would have them at Union Square.

Private Dining Room/Wine Cellar
Il Buco has a wonderful room that is stocked full with wine. $150 should be about right. It's below the main room. Only walked through it on the way to the fridge (long story, delivering pigs) but I've put it in my back pocket for the appropriate occasion.

UWS Wine Bar Survey
Arte around the Corner. Went there tonight, on my way home. It was about 2230, I walked past Wine and Roses, which was crowded, and decided to give Arte around the Corner a try, as it was less busy. Good call. Bartender was a girl named Jill who was totally cool. A regular was at the bar, and we chatted, with Jill, and a second glass of wine was served, and a biscosti before they were put away for the night (apparently on the house). Jill was totally cool, and the wine was fine. I'll give it another go. Not yet a favorite, but it might be.
Vai and Ripose 72 are definitely well worth the effort. Arte should be good on an off night where I don't have to wait for a seat.

UWS Wine Bar Survey
Been working my way through the UWS. Please fill in where I've missed, and expand on my comments.
Bin 71: Frenetic at night, good wine list, good food, the staff is informed and friendly. I like going in the afternoon (and they serve lunch, go figure) 'cause I can get a seat at the bar.
Barcibo Enoteca: it's across the street from my building, so access is good. All wines are Italian. I love the stemless glasses. They'll give you a sample of anything by the glass. Food: veal crostini, the mushroom risotto, the cheese platter ... all good. Very busy at night (forget about Fri/Sat nights) but a very good experience.
Riposo 72: SE corner of 72nd and Columbus. They have happy hour pricing, $2/glass or 20% per bottle before 6.30pm, and all day Mon/Tues (I think). The flatbreads are huge and delicious. It's in regular rotation for me.
Arte around the corner: walked past a million times, but haven't yet sampled the wares.
Wine and Roses: went one night, it was packed, standing room only. We got menus, but waited 15 minutes to order, no one ever came by, so we left. Since it was packed, imagine it's good, but can't comment.
Vai: my new favorite place. The wines are fantastic (the Tempranillo, the Malbec, the Negro something or other, it's got a big O on the bottle), and I haven't found any food that's mediocre. I've had the yellowtail sushimi, the sausage rigatoni, the grilled squid, the gulf shrimp, the cheese platter (you can't do better buying cheese at Zabar's ... huge portions of great cheese, unlimited bread). I've been several times, the staff recognized and remembered me, and the service was generous. I've brought different friends each time, and they've all been wow'd.
Pudding Stones West: very clean and modern bar. It seemed a tad antiseptic of an atmosphere for me (Thursday night, late, not crowded) but quite OK.
Buceo 95: Next on my list, but haven't been here.
What have I missed? (limited to the UWS -- 59th to 110th, CPW to the river) Include restaurants where I can sit at the bar, have a great glass of wine and order an appetizer.

Vai - UWS
hadn't heard of the place until your post. Looked at the website (http://www.vairestaurant.com/restaura... it looked pretty good. Met up there tonight with a buddy, I got there about 5.30pm (on a Monday) and I was the only one there.
Eventually my colleague showed up, we had a bottle of the Primitivo, and ordered the 5 cheese platter and a pizzeta, the proscuitto with figs and brie. The cheese platter was unbelievable. The portions of cheese were huge, they gave you lots of bread (as well as a three well serving platter with marinated cherry tomatoes, rosemary infused olive oil, and some sort of ricotta cheese thing. The pizzeta was very good.
Not wanting to leave, and the place having filled up to standing room only, we got a bottle of the Tempranillo and the sashimi yellowtail, which was served with avocado. Brilliant.
Two bottles of wine (with two more glasses on the house) and three food items, plus as much bread, oil and ricotta that you could eat ... $150. That price is much better than anything else in the neighborhood (Bin 71, Barcibo Enoteca, Wine and Roses, Arte around the corner). The staff was super friendly. I'm going to put this place into regular rotation.
Pay the sitter and have a great evening.

Late-ish dinner at Telepan Sat - recs?
the smoked trout appetizer is amazing. I went there last Friday with the farmers for Flying Pigs (they supply pork for the restaurant) and we had the 4 course tasting menu, there were four of us and we mixed and matched all the courses but the main. Everything was good, but the trout, the smoked corn, and the heritage pork were above and beyond. And Bill Telepan is a super nice guy.
The service was outstanding, I wouldn't worry about them trying to rush you out the door.

[something] Enoteca - 69th and Broadway
The crowds are 20's/30's/40's, at night they're both crowded and noisy, but afternoons are less crowded, more to my comfort level. I like Bin 71's space a bit more, but they both do a nice job. Wine's are in the $10-12 and up range per glass. Both places have great cheese platters, and at Barcibo, the veal crostini is worthwhile, as is the mushroom risotto.

[something] Enoteca - 69th and Broadway
Barcibo Enoteca. Run by the same folks who operate Bin 71, over on Colombus. I think the place is great. Good small plates, good wine. All Italian labels, though. It's crowded at night, every night. Quite nice in the afternoons though.

how should the wine mix-up have been handled? [Moved from Manhattan board]
I think it may have changed management, as inside it was different than last fall, and they got rid of the "Cafe" from the front of the name.
