San Antonio with kids?

Just remember Willies Icehouse (several locations) - wings/beers/ burgers/onion rings/crawfish type place. Full sandbox. Good food. Not a fan of all the sand in my car though....

San Antonio with kids?

Our standards (we also have a 2 and a 4 yr old)

The Yacht Club (1604 & NW Military) - full fenced in playscape for the kids. Decent food (nothing earth shattering) Kind of Baja Seafood type fare.

Bigz - (full play yard) - great burgers (one of the co-owners is one of the top chefs in the city with other restaurants).

The Cove - close to downtown - Was on Diner/ Drives. As far as the menu goes, I think you will appreciate it. Has a backyard for the kids. Sometimes live music. Very casual.

I actually logged in today to get an idea of other places around town that are like this as well. Looking for new ideas.

South Texas/Hill Country Winery

Down home food. Lots of chalkboard specials. Owners have strong ties to Louisiana, so there is plenty of cajun influence as well. (they make their own Boudin)......my favorite appt is the Oysters Bruton.

it is not a fancy place (out in the middle of nowhere in an old roadside service station. Owner is a blue's musician so there have been many of Texas musicians stop in over the years.

Auguest E's is in Fredericksburg and also has good food. It is white table cloth...but vwas overpriced.

I really like going out to HIll Top Cafe. It is about 8 miles outside of Fredericksburg. Great food, very casual and down home. You could also visit Becker winery while you are there.

Food in Port Aransas?

Shell's is really small but I really like it. More of a lunch spot in my opinion......

If you like wine, Pelican Club has a nice list. Little more upscale.

I LOVE the Peanut Butter Shrimp at Scampi's in South Padre Island. Not cheap, but a must try if you want to splurge a little.

Best Burger in San Antonio?

I had a nice burger at Gourmet Burger Grill today. Higher quality ingredients and some interesting burger combinations that I enjoyed. Wasn't cheap, but I really enjoyed it. Very different from Chris Madrids/Longhorn/Chesters. They both have their place in this world.

They also had some nice wine selections.

Gonzales Meat Market now in SA

So I made the trip over there this Sat. I did think everything was reasonably priced. I thought the brisket was really lean and wasn't as tender as i expected. Not even close. The sausage was ok. Pork ribs were good. Sauce was good. I did not try any sides, but they potatoes looked great. Tea came from one of those new Coca Cola Company machines where you hit the button for SWEET/UNSWEET/RASPBERRY/GREEN TEA and then it dispenses it out the normal looking tea dispenser, but it is really coming from a hose just like your soda would.

Overall, If I was in the area and needed a BBQ plate, I would stop again. But I would not make a special trip for this BBQ.

Mueller's in Taylor...now just "Meh"

I tried Muellers last week for first time at lunch on a Friday.....I really enjoyed the briskett. The Baby Ribs were pretty forgettable. They were out of all sausage, so I didn't get to try any of it. Also thought the dipping sauce that came on the tray was just an orangy watery flavorless mess.

Suggestions For First Trip to City Market in Luling?

Be Careful. There is a place called "Luling City Market" that opened up in Houston. The original place in Luling is just called "City Market" . Some people do web searches and get the wrong info.

I have never ever ever ever seen pulled pork or Mutton or anything else other than Ribs/Sausage/Briskett at City Market.

Some more inside info - BRING CASH. No credit Cards taken. I do think they have an ATM inside or really close though.

Also - they serve Big Red in glass bottles which is always nice. Beer is really cheap. Their tea has lemon and nutrisweet already added for some unknown reason. Keep this in mind. I usually avoid it and order a shiner bock.

I would certainly try a little bit of everything while you are there. The ribs are the best in the state in my opinion. The sausage does have a lot of grease to it, which some people love/some people hate. I love it wrapped around a piece of white bread.

Developing a taste for wine

easiest thing to do is start drinking red wine with dinner. It really makes a difference if you ask me.

The most popular easy going red wine is Menage A Trois Red wine. It is a blend wine that is not too dry, so you can get used to drinking wines and then move up to something with a little more body.

Good Place for Breakfast in Wimberley/New Braunfels/San Marcos

we really enjoyed Fork & Spoon (or is it Knife and Fork???) in New Braunfels. It is a small place but the food was great. It is on the freeway in the same shopping plaza as the movie theater and Mamacitas Tex mex is there too.

First Stop San Antonion then on to South Padre Island

I believe Luling is $9.99 per lb on Briskett and Ribs....not sure about the sausage They only take cash, so keep that in mind. Then you pay for your sides and drink up at the front. Beer is really cheap and they still serve the Big Red in the glass bottle I believe.

RIP part III: Austin Restaurant Closings

I ate there once. Wasn't impressed.

In my opinion, I think their biggest problem is that all your business in that location is coming from business men, government, or conventions. And to be honest, a lot of those business dinners end up at steakhouses. Also, Austin has this reputation of having some great locally owned restaurants, so travelers want to try the local flavor while they are here and not some chain.

Hill Top - outside Fredericksburg

Just thought I would share a nice delight for visiting the Hill Country this summer.

Do yourself a favor and stop by Hill Top Cafe outside Fredericksburg. A must is to start the table out with a couple of orders of Oysters Bruton. Think of a pan fried oysters with a delicious spicy sauce that I know includes Pick A Pepper sauce and Tiger Sauce with some Garlic. They will also do shrimp in that style as well if you ask.

For those of us who really enjoy Boudin but live outside of LA and East Texas where it is more common, Hll Top also makes their own Boudin. One is regular, and the other is a Seafood Boudin that carried a nice kick of heat on it.

The rest of the menu is great as well. I love to take visitors there because of the great setting of the restaurant in this old gas station in the middle of nowhere.

First Stop San Antonion then on to South Padre Island

Padre - If you do get a chance to do a sit down meal, please try the Peanut Butter Shrimp at Scampi's. It is a "nice" restaurant but still pretty casual. The tables inside are all PVC patio furniture.

Jakes Burgers is a good casual place for a bite.

SA - I would pick Luling City market over Saltlick. I would pick Coopers in New Braunfels over Salt Lick and it is only a 30 min drive from SA. If you do go to New Braunfels, make sure you take the family down to Gruene. I usually let the wife and kids shop at the stores there while I have a beer at Gruene Hall.

I did try they cinnamon roll at Lulu's and it was a fun treat for everyone to share. I hear their chicken fried steak is good.

BBQ I-37 SA to CC?

So i stopped by Van's on the way to CC last friday. There are only about 12 tables inside, and it was crowded at noon on a friday of course. Pretty basic menu of plates and sandwhiches. Also saw a sausage wrap on the menu. I was in a rush so I decided to go with a sausage sandwhich and a briskett sandwhich. Both were served on white bread. Tried the sausage one first and I didn't really think there was much to it. The meat was barely warm and didn't have much spice or flavor. The briskett was fine.

I also saw they serve breakfast each day. Eggs, Biscuits and gravy.

So if I was hungry and driving I would stop at Van's again. Would I drive there just to try to BBQ as I have done several other places in Central Texas? No.

BBQ I-37 SA to CC?

There is a place called Van's BBQ aroud the Oakville area. I have heard positive things about it, but haven't stopped there yet.

I make that drive often and not really impressed with any options on the way to Corpus, especially since Oakville Mercantile burned down. That was truely a great burger.

Good New Spots in San Antonio

I took some friends out to Auden's Kitchen for lunch recently and I have to say we were underwhelmed on a few things. There were of course several dishes ordered and people sharing all around the table. The stick wings as an App was undercooked. Then one of my cohorts ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and it was VASTLY undercooked. Another thing that was lacking was the service. Waiter wasn't on top of things at all.

I hope this place does make it. I will try again in several months when they have a chance to pull their act together.
