Fun food projects (that don't involve cake!) Fermenting is fun: sour dough, yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, etc. |

Todao, that recipe is my go-to basic bread dough. Cheesecake17, 1.5 tsp of yeast along with the water, flour, and sugar in the first step of the dough. Sandylc, flour tortillas sometimes do as yeasted flatbreads have a more complex flavor. |

Cocktails to drink with baked goods? Don't hate! You can't be mad that my justification is better than yours. ;-) |

Cocktails to drink with baked goods? Because of recent research indicating that people who drink moderately live longer than teatotalers, my husband and I are trying to add an evening drink to our post-kid-bedtime routine. The problem is that I have no idea how to pair alcohol and foods. Specifically, I love to bake, and I cannot imagine wine or beer with my evening chocolate chip cookie (or pumpkin bread, or rhubarb crumble, or cheesecake). We've got limited space for booze, so I don't really want a fully stocked bar, I would love just one fantastic, all-purpose mixed drink to pair with sweet baked goods. |

So start with a very high ratio of butter/onion/garlic/bacon/hot sauce/anything else that ISN'T a green to actual vegetables. And then work your way up to enjoying them with less b/o/g/b/h/a? Alright! Sounds like a plan. That's actually the research approved way to kid-friendly veggies of all kinds. Thank you all. Any other excellent tips will be similarly digested. :-) |

I've got 2 small children and a not-too-picky husband. As part of our "less-meat" lifestyle, we already eat a lot of vegetables. But greens are SO easy to grow and SO nutritious, I feel like a fool that we never eat them. Why not? I've never found a recipe that anyone in my family really enjoys. So give them to me here.... A fantastic recipe, a revolutionary technique, a newby introduction. How do I get my family eating and enjoying their greens? Turnip greens, collard greens, dandelion greens, kale, whatever you've got. |

super-delicious, super-flavourful broccoli recipe? I love finely chopped broccoli as a salad. I usually lightly "steam" it for 30 seconds in the microwave with the just the water from washing it. My current addiction is a clove of garlic crushed to a paste with salt, olive oil, pepper, and and juice of half a lemon. Dang it's good. Throw in dried cranberries and toasted almonds if you've got company. |

My mamma taught me to salt the water when making stock from a pre-roasted chicken or turkey. But none of my cookbooks call for that. They all add veggies and herbs, but no salt beyond what was used for the roasting. Who's right? What do you do? |

Stupid (faux baking) questions The recipe calls for the drumstick cake to be frozen, so I'd say keeping it frozen for a couple of days shouldn't be a problem. I mean, basically it's an ice cream cake. Freeze away. |

Toddler birthday party - healthy menu ideas Yes, yes, yes: lots of kinds of fresh fruit cut up in bite-sized bits, and hummus and/or guacamole with bite-sized veggies and crackers or pita. I think a juice based punch OR lemonade would be fantastic. A smoothie bar sounds like a ton of work. If you really want to incorporate more fruit, the frozen berries can be added instead of ice cubes (or fresh berries frozen inside of ice cubes). Popsicles would be fun, but also a huge mess unless you kept them entirely outside. Deviled eggs, mini meatballs, tiny peanut butter sandwiches, mini-muffins or a cheese platter are all classic protien options that would be accepted by parents and tots. Basically I advocate what you'd expect of any moderately healthy birthday party spread for any person, but then I'm of the opinion that small people should eat the same good, nutricious foods that big people eat. Although, I'll admit, I tend to be in the minority. ;-) |

Alright, urban and suburban chowhounders, would you eat pigeon from your neighborhood? Are they safe? Maybe only in limited quantities (the same way you can eat fish from poluted lakes)? What's the worst thing that could happen? While we're on the subject, how do you feel about eating squirrel? Is a suburban squirrel worse than a rural one? |
