Check out this site: http://gfinsf.com/

Friday night and all day Saturday.

For Friday night you might want to try Incanto (www.incanto.biz). There's a sample menu here:

Tehina--Other uses besides making Hummus?

I use it to make baba ghanoush, which is delicious. Roasted eggplant, garlic, lemon juice, tahini, olive oil. Basically like hummus but with roasted eggplant instead of chickpeas.

What to do with Fava Beans?

Once you've taken the individual beans out of the pod and blanched them, do you peel them?
I wonder if this is really necessary.

What to do with Fava Beans?

Hi,
I recently bought my first bunch of Fava beans from the farmer's market, and while they are a PITA to prepare I love their flavor and texture. So far I've only heated them up with some butter or olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. Does anyone have ideas of other things to do with these tasty legumes?

Lo-Sugar or sugar-free pastries in Marin?

Even things that are sweetened with fruit have sugar in them, as fruits are full of sugar, not the processed kind, but fructose, which is still a sugar.

Foods you dread making because they’re time-consuming

My recipe is from the Fannie Farmer Cookbook. You can probably find a copy in the library. This doesn't make something that tastes like a can of pork and beans, though. It's much better!

Here's a link to a similar online recipe.

Type 1 Diabetes, Vegetarian recommendations

Dr. Rubin's "Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies" does not include full plans for meals, simply recipes for various types of dishes (Breakfast, Hors d'Oevres, Soups, Salads, Grains and Legumes, Vegetables, Fish, Poultry, Meat, Desserts, and others). How much you eat of any one item is entirely up to you. All recipes come with a complete nutritional analysis.

Gluten-free vegan at SFO?

How did you like it?

Foods you dread making because they’re time-consuming

Boston baked beans from scratch. They take forever (soaking overnight then baking for 8 hours or so) but are SO worth it. I should make them again soon!

Type 1 Diabetes, Vegetarian recommendations

Alan Rubin, who was my endocrinologist for many years (until he retired) wrote several books on Diabetes in the "for Dummies" series. One of them is entitled "Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies." While it is not a vegetarian cookbook, your sister still might find it helpful.

A Request: Re. Diabetes Posts

I understand that the overwhelming majority of diabetics in this country are middle-aged people with type 2 diabetes. However, I think it is important to understand that there are at least three different types of diabetes (type 1, type 2, and gestational) and probably more. The treatment (including medication and meal plan) is different for each type. So I think it is important to specify which type of diabetes you are referring to in your post.

Thanks,
A middle-aged person with type 1

Help with Diet Restrictions

Your requirements aren't very specific. Can she eat wheat or does she just prefer quinoa and millet? Can she eat rice? What is restricted besides non-organic meat?
I'm sure any place will cook in olive oil if you ask them to.
What do you consider mid-range priced?

sides help!

Polenta would work well as a starch. I agree entirely on the braised fennel or leeks for vegetables, especially if you put some garlic into them.

ISO Non-Corned Brisket

Where can I find such a thing in San Francisco without paying an arm and a leg for it? I haven't seen one in a long while.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me.

opinion on chicken breasts recipe

Use boneless, skinless chicken thighs instead. They're tastier and much more forgiving.
I made something very much like this for dinner the other night and it was delicious.

La Lengua Chronicles - My Project for 2012

Lotus Garden has re-opened. We ate there a few weeks ago. I get the feeling that Pastores may have closed, though. I've gone by several times in the last few weeks and the windows have all been shuttered up.
Does anyone know what's up?

Restaurants around Union Square

Actually, now that I think about it again, for French food you should check out Le Charm. Their chicken liver salad is excellent if you're into that sort of thing (I certainly am), also the mussels, and goat cheese with brussels sprouts.

For mains I don't think I can recommend anything as their menu changes regularly, though I have enjoyed the salmon with lentils.

Restaurants around Union Square

There are quite a few French restaurants on Belden Place, which I believe you can walk to from Union Square. See http://www.belden-place.com/

Foodie from Chicago needs to know what SFO Neighborhood to live in.

Look at what I call Bernal Depths. South of 30th Street between Mission St. and San Jose Ave. There are a lot of parks nearby, (St. Mary's, Balboa Park, Glen Canyon Park). 101 and 280 are both within the blink of an eye. Easy access to the Mission and Glen Park for good food. Lots of great public transit.

Make-ahead holiday dinner party menu?

Ina Garten recently did a show addressing exactly the problem you describe. Everything she made can be made ahead and stored in the fridge until you get home from work on Friday. Then they can go in the oven or on the stove.

Is anyone making a Gingerbread House this year?

I use a recipe that I think came with the pan I use to make the house pieces.

1/2 C shortening (I always use butter)
1/2 C granulated sugar
1/2 C dark molasses
2 TBSP cold water
3 C all-purpose flour
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
(I always add some freshly-grated nutmeg, though it's not in the recipe)

Cream together shortening, sugar, molasses, and water. Sift together flour, spices, and salt. Add dry ingredients to shortening mixture and mix well. Dough will be stiff. Chill at least one hour.

Press into greased mold and bake in preheated 350F oven for 25 minutes.

Help with (yeast) cinnamon rolls

Once they've come to room temperature give them 30 to 45 minutes to rise.

What are you baking these days? December, 2011 [OLD]

I just made mini nutella pochette from Melissa D'Arabian's ten dollar dinners program. They are cute little cookes that have been very well received by my extended family. I expect they'll be gone soon.
