Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]
Organic Valencia Crunchy Peanut Butter is history.
After reading all the raves on Chowhound I finally tried it & really liked it much better than Smuckers or the other brands I've tried here in NYC.
If anyone has any info on this product or something similar, I'd appreciate it.
fwiw, I don't really care that it was organic, it just tasted better than TJ's regular crunchy.
Where to buy Beurre Bordier?
I've brought butter back to the US from France & London (btw, Bordier can be found at Fortnum & Mason) several times.
All I've ever done is put it in a ziplock bag (two if I have an extra) and it travels just fine.
Having transported it in both checked bags & carryon, if possible, I prefer to place the butter in a checked bag as the butter remains more stationary & therefore retains its shape better.
When in a carryon, the other items in the bag tend to shift & jostle causing the butter to get a bit misshapen, perfectly edible but a little less attractive.
fwiw, I always declare the butter and have never had an issue with US Customs.
Best Butter- European or American ? [Moved from The Best board]
Lurpak is my favorite widely available butter.
On a recent trip to London, I was thrilled to find Bordier butter in the food dept at Fortnum & Mason. I brought a few bars back home to NYC and have yet to decide whether I prefer it to Pascal Bellavaire's butter.
Bakery for Philadelphia Butter Cake? (moved from PA board)
Can anyone recommend a great place @ 18th & Callowhill for butter cake?
After going without for over 25 years I recently visited my old neighborhood bakery butter cake source (Danish Bakers in Rockledge) & am now craving more.
Next trip, I'll only be in Center City and was hoping to pick up a worthy substitute.
TIA
Anchor butter
Have there been any recent sightings of Anchor butter?
Zabar's has been out for a few months now.

Bumping this thread in hopes that someone knows ANYWHERE in the US where Le Beurre Bordier can be bought?
That's no. 1 on my butter wish list.
fwiw, I know Echire also from France has many fans and I've noticed it has become more widely available in the US. In NYC, I've seen it at Food Emporium as well as Dean & DeLuca.
At the recent Fancy Food Show I tasted what is a butter is from Belgium (made w/sea salt from Normandy) that was AMAZING.
Sadly, its name escapes me but if anyone has a clue what it might be , please let me know.
ISO a GREAT White Pizza topped with
ok so another summer is almost about to come to an end and STILL I've yet to find my white pie w.fresh tomato sklices, spinach & garlic.
Here's hoping an overdue thread bump will result in some new thoughts or suggestions.
Is there such a thing as "beef bacon"?
I realize this is an old post but thought I'd add a recent mail order link to some Beef Fry
http://fwd4.me/CON
I know this brand name, but don't think that's what we had growing up in Philly. Most likely, we used Hebrew National.
IMO, while beef fry may have looked similar and served the same purpose, it never quite achieved the crispiness that makes bacon..well bacon.
For recreating, treif like breakfast meats, I always thought that fried thick cut kosher beef salami (from a chub) was closer to kielbasa than beef fry ever was to bacon.
Tim-Tams in NY?
Holy Land Market at 122 St. Marks Place (btwn 1st & Ave A - south side of street) is the most reliable source of Tim Tams that I've found in NYC.
Where to Buy Marinara Sauce in Little Italy (Manhattan)
I'm a fan of Piemonte's bolognese sauce.
fyi, it is a bit on the sweeter side buth that's how i like it.
Delicious Flatiron takeout soup?
3rd this!
imo, Cafe Medina blows 5th Ave Epicure away
Does Redhead offer takeout?
If they were open in the morning/now I would have ;O)
I was hoping someone here might know so I could plan accordingly
Does Redhead offer takeout?
Their website is silent on the topic.
I emailed the restaurant but am afraid they won't see it/be able to reply until after I need the answer.
thanks
Sufganiyot (Israeli Jelly Donuts for Chanukah) in NYC
Pretty sure they can be had at the Holy Land Market on St. Mark's (btwn 1st Ave & Ave. A - south side of street, closer to A) but I'd call first to ensure they haven't sold out.
Are 8 oz. Dr Pepper
Thanks!
Hmmm......I just checked that D'ag's online store and only saw Coke in 8 oz cans.
Maybe I'll go up there but was wondering if you can recall where else you might've seen any Dr Pepper?
Are 8 oz. Dr Pepper
cans or bottles available for sale anywhere in NYC or maybe even NJ or So CT?
I know there are online stores that ship soda (including Dublin Dr Pepper) but I'd rather save on that added expense if possible.
Thanks
Arnott's Mint Slice Cookie
Perhaps the places that carry Tim Tams also stock Mint Slice?
The ones I'm aware of (though you should call to ensure its in stock) are:
Tuck's - there are 2 locations but the EV spot on 1st Street off of 1st Ave seems to stock a larger selection of Arnott's.
Holyland Market - 122 St. Marks Place 212-477-4440 They are usually the most consistent source
Landmark Sunshine Movie Theatre on Houston at the snack counter
and of course there's always the mail order option such as http://tinyurl.com/3lb23y
good luck and hth
Where to find good root beer?
IBC is one of my favorite root beers.
Surprisingly enough I saw IBC for sale at the KMart in Astor Place.
Also, the Shake Shake sells Abita and while they only serve it in cups, maybe they'll be kind enough to sell ya some bottles.
good luck
2 casual breakfast suggestions (weekdays)
Thanks for the list..there are some places on it that I've meant to try.
Clover- and Siphon-Brewed Coffee
i'm not positive but 9th St Espresso may use Clover machines
Where can I buy maldon salt near Soho?
fyi, in addition to those shops already mentioned, Maldon is also carried by Food Emporium and Fresh Direct
2 casual breakfast suggestions (weekdays)
oooops...thanks for the heads up
but...
bummer
I guess it's back to Clinton Street now.. Sheesh... I wish there were more (non coffee shop) or better yet excellent coffee shop or other weekday breakfast options near StuyTown and the EV.
2 casual breakfast suggestions (weekdays)
Consider the 9th Street Market (north side of street between 1st & 2nd Aves).
Not positive about a liquor license but iirc, it serves most if not all of your dishes and is open for breakfast on Thursdays and Fridays
Silver Swan Song
I am heartbroken.
I wholeheartedly ditto all your comments and sentiments.
I distinctly remember that woman and I recently was wondering what had become of those two gentlemen, who may have been, iirc John and Carlos.
So many unique patrons over the years, All of whom were treated with nothing but love, respect, good cheer and good food from the ever changing yet ever returning staff at the Swan.
I and my co-worker also stopped in the Swan one night in 1995 seeking refuge from a crazy crowd at "No Idea". We remained rooted at the Swan's bar in the "backed chairs" Friday nights and most other nights of the week for the next decade.
A few years ago, my change in workplace resulted in all too infrequent visits. However, even if I hadn't showed my face for 9 months, I was always warmly welcomed with a "Where have you been?" and "Why can't you get you b*&% in here?"
It was truly, home.
I managed to get over there June 4th and sadly neither Mike nor Renata were there. Still I had a great time catching up with old friends. No mention was made of the impending closing and I sincerely appreciate your announcement.
I think I'll go pour myself a scotch now and have a good cry.
Sammy's Roumanian?
I took my mother last fall (when she was up from Florida, of course).
She absolutely loved it!
Going with pretty low expectations, I was more than pleasantly surprised by the lamb chops. They were the tastiest ones I've had in quite some time.
Damn you Artichoke!
not that it means anything permanent but they were open today @12 or 1ish when I walked buy and there was no line. Although the 1 customer I saw in there was picking up 3 boxes.
Sadly my arms were full with packages or else I would've grabbed me a slice or 2 to go.
Best packaged non-bakery store bought cookies
My fave chocolate chip cookie are Betty's Best Chocolate Chip Macadamia Nut Cookies
They have the perfect proportion of nuts to chocolate to cookie. btw, these are a crispy rather than a soft/chewy cookie.
Since they and are sold at the Wholesale Unlimited stores in you guessed it...Hawaii I have to get my fix by mailorder to nyc
http://www.cybersnacks.net/bettys_best_cookies.html
Next up I have to echo earlier posters and go with most varieties of TimTams. While great as a slam, they are even better mixed up in vanilla ice cream!
Tourist Traps to Avoid
Maybe it's because I went to Sammy's with such low expectations, but I have to admit that they served up some of the best lamb chops I've had in a long time.
New to 19th and 2nd, need good delivery options
ordered from Kanoyama last night.
FYI, they only take CASH for deliveries and sometimes you need to be patient with the order taker.
Usually the food comes in 30 minutes or less.(fwiw I'm in StuyTown nr 18th St)
Quality is good, better than Mizu I think, though it's been awhile since I've ordered from there. Plus imo, Kanoyama has a better selection than most sushi places that deliver (ie they'll deliver omakase)
