Crab Cakes

I love Morton's crab cake! I've had the crab cake at FWD, and I think I'd still have to go with Morton's.

KOREATOWN - LA Dish of the Month (October 2013)

Last night we tried Kang Hodong Baekjeong restaurant. We usually go to Park's but decided to go with a coworkers recommendation instead. After putting in our name and discovering it was a two hour wait, we walked over to the HMS Bounty for a couple (yowza strong) drinks.

At Kang Hodong Baekjeon we ended up ordering the beef combo which came with brisket, marinated and un-marinated short rib, and a kimchi stew. We also ordered the pork belly. My coworker has been to Park's but said Kang Hodong Baekjeon was better. Needless to say, I was disappointed. It was good, but I think Park's has a better quality of meat and there are WAY more sides. Also, the bbq area is bigger at Park's. Here the meat is kind of all crowded together on the smaller bbq. The pancake at Park's is also much better. I will say the pork belly was pretty good. But overall, Park's has them beat.

After dinner, we walked over to Chocolate Chair and had a couple scoops of ice cream and a banana split. I'm not a big ice cream person (gasp!) but I liked it. It was fun to watch them make it.

Canelé Bordelais

Not sure if the OP is still monitoring this old thread, but Proof (also in Atwater Village) has them on occasion.

What happened to my batter?

I'm in Los Angeles. The humidity should have been about the same as it was on Christmas. I just bought the flour before Thanksgiving.

It's all very frustrating.

What happened to my batter?

The eggs were just purchased.

What happened to my batter?

I did make them (under protest). They were not as round and dense as usual. The came out flat, yet puffy if that makes sense. They also fried really fast...too fast.

The crowd here seemed to enjoy them. I was too caught up in wondering what happened.

What happened to my batter?

I didn't sift or weigh the flour & cornmeal, but used the same scoop and measuring cups as all the other times. I don't think there was a significant difference in the amount of either the flour or cornmeal.

What happened to my batter?

The first batch this morning was runny before I even added the eggs. The eggs didn't seem any different in size as before.

What happened to my batter?

It was frozen, but I had defrosted it and drained the water. Used the same method as I always have.

What happened to my batter?

This morning I attempted to make corn fritters using a recipe I've successfully used many times before (as recently as Christmas morning) but this time the batter was very runny. I dumped it and started over only to have the same thing happen again.

The recipe is as follows:

Combine and heat just until the butter has melted:
1 cup water
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Black pepper to taste
8 tablespoons butter

Add all at once & whisk:
3/4 cup flour
1/4 cup cornmeal

Stir in 1 cup corn kernels

Using a wooden spoon, add 3 eggs, one at a time. Mixture will be thick.

I used the same flour, eggs, brand of butter, method of measuring as the other times...I am stumped.

Buttermilk lovers only

Let me know how freezing works out for you. I too remember getting the smaller pint cartons. I hate having to toss most of the carton, or worse, having to make things with it that I really don't need to be eating all week!

BTW, WO & WS, I'm in Pasadena and would gladly split a quart with you too!

Culture 22 in Pasadena....Anyone been?

I've been there a couple of times. Both times I had the lamb chops, which were really good. I wanted to like the oysters, but the sauces just didn't do it for me. I thought they were better on their own. The potato waffle is oddly addicting.

Help! Chicken noodle soup delivered to Pasadena work place?

You could try LA Bite, they deliver for many restaurants in Pasadena. They have a pretty hefty surcharge, but may be worth it so you don't have to drive there from South Bay. I'm not sure if they have a deli restaurant, but you can look.

ISO Angel Food Cake - Bakery

I'm looking for a bakery which sells angel food cake...preferably near Pasadena.

Thanks!

Heart shaped treats that don't suck

Village Bakery in Atwater has two different dark chocolate ganache covered heart cupcakes. One is made with chocolate cake and a peanut butter filling, the other is red velvet cake with cream cheese filling. The have posted pictures on their Facebook page if you want to check it out.

I think they also have some heart shaped hand pies as well.

Any suggestions where to get high end appliances in Los Angeles?!

Just as an FYI, the Great Indoors is part of the Sears Family. Anything they have in their showroom should be available from Sears. I think the Great Indoors has more of the higher end items on display in their showroom, but any Sears should be able to order and deliver whatever item you choose.

What kind of potato for latkes? What kind of oil?

I've been using my large potato ricer to press the liquid out from shredded potatoes for a few years now. Works great and no stained towels.
