Countertop material: granite vs. solid surface (corian) vs. engineered stone (silestone)
Yes, I should have mentioned that it WOULD be with an eye to selling the house within 5 years.
Countertop material: granite vs. solid surface (corian) vs. engineered stone (silestone)
I've read this nearly 6 year long thread with interest. We are going to (finally) be redoing our kitchen, and I'm afraid we've missed the boat on the granite-and-stainless-steel "look"...I want to know, can anyone venture a guess as to what the "next big thing" will be...we'd rather be on the forefront of something new, than the tail end of something that will be dated in a few years.
Buttermilk in scallopped potatoes
Monavano, I just wanted to let you know I broke down and used cream after all. It was for Valentine's day dinner and I didn't want to mess around. I'm sure it was a zillion calories but the results were great - if anyone wants the recipe it was on Epicurious, Yukon Gold and mushroom gratin with blue cheese. Fantastic.
Buttermilk in scallopped potatoes
I have a recipe I wanted to try that calls for heavy cream and blue cheese...I thought I would slim it down a little by substituting buttermilk. I think the more sour taste would be good, but I'm worried now that the buttermilk might not hold up to the baking and might separate or curdle. The recipe calls for the casserole to bake for an hour at 400.
Bad idea?
Prime Steakhouse at Bellagio
You know, I think I am trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I think for our anniversary we'll go with Alize. Vegas has such a plethora of loud, hip, trendy places that I was just trying to find one that was quiet, romantic, and beautiful, with good food.

Prime Steakhouse at Bellagio
Fair question, Veggo. It's because the only steak that consistently is mentioned there is the filet, and I'm not a filet person. I like a NY Strip, and I have my favorite steakhouses where I love the meat (Palm, Flemings). Prime in Bellagio is just oh so pretty, and looks like the perfect place for a special occasion (anniversary), and since they do have so many other things on the menu I wanted to try it for those reasons.

Prime Steakhouse at Bellagio
Thanks, zippy, but this new format is new to me, and I followed the instructions to put "Prime Steakhouse" in the space up at the top and indicated "Las Vegas" and I got very little hits. I really appreciate your listing them for me.
And Jeff, I had also read where the steaks weren't all that, that's why my original post asked for other things on the menu that people had enjoyed. It just seems like a such a pretty room, and I can't believe we have never been.
I'll go read the other threads now and make up my mind. Thanks again.
Prime Steakhouse at Bellagio
Ok, since it's been almost 3 weeks and there is not even a speck of an answer to my question, I'll try another one.
Is there something radically, horribly wrong with this place that there are almost no prior threads (I looked again), and no one has a word to say about it in response to my question? Was it the "no steak" parameter that made everyone shy away? Or some deep dark secret that no one is willing to divulge?
what happened to search??????????
No, I suffer from "new" blindness...I haven't been on this site in a long time and when I come back and everything is different, well, I panic!
what happened to search??????????
What happened to "MY CHOW" to find posts you've responded to/posted?
Prime Steakhouse at Bellagio
I tried doing a search, but unless I'm totally clueless I honestly could not find any threads on Prime.
From reading reviews on other boards I'm pretty sure I don't want to order steak. Too many "ordinary" steak reviews have convinced me that great steak can be found elsewhere, but I really want to go to Prime for the atmosphere and what else they have to offer in terms of food.
So, if you've been, and you didn't have steak, what DID you order that tasted great and that you would recommend?

Is the food at Sage really salty?
I'm trying to decide between Sage and returning to Twist, where we loved our meal. And there was so much more on the menu to try...so if you had just one night to spend in CityCenter what would you do?
Is the food at Sage really salty?
Great reviews, menu sounds wonderful...except it seems that every other item contains bacon or something else salty. I really dislike overly salty food, so is it? I didn't really believe it when people said the food in many of the Mario restaurants at the Venetian was too salty, don't want to make the same mistake.
Comparing Twist to Alinea
I know this is a difficult question because it encompasses two places, but there just might be someone here who has dined at both.
If you have, how would you compare the two?
OpenTable and How it Works
I just called the restaurant back, spoke to a manager, he said of course they DO take them and said he would update both his hostesses.
OpenTable and How it Works
You're right, I did talk to a hostess who did sound clueless, she said "we only take our own gift certificates". But I'll use it somewhere else before then anyway just to be sure.
OpenTable and How it Works
Bumping up this old thread to ask another question...does the restaurant eat the value of the $20 certificate I receive and want to redeem? Or do they get reimbursed by OT for that? Also, a restaurant that uses OT for reservations says they will NOT accept that $20 certificate - can they do that?
ABQ and SF - got the "where", need help with the "what"
Thank you both, just the guidance I needed!
ABQ and SF - got the "where", need help with the "what"
Going to NM for the first time, have a lot of questions but will narrow it down to start...
This might sound dumb, but I have an easier time knowing what I want to eat in a fancier place than in a casual one...
So, to start, we want to go to Frontier in ABQ and Pasqual's in Santa Fe (both for late breakfast/early lunch), but have no idea what to order from a menu with lots of things we are unfamiliar with.
What we DON'T want is a boring clone of something Mexican we can get anywhere.
If you were bringing an out of town friend to either of these places, what would make you say "Oh, you gotta try this, it's fantastic"...?
Near the University of Chicago
Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions. I'm not sure where we'll eat ( I love the idea of eating right on campus)...but we are college junkies and the UofC is on our must-do of tours, the eating is actually secondary.
Was "noodle dishes from snail" a typo?
Near the University of Chicago
We'll be touring the campus on a Thursday afternoon, would like lunch beforehand. We'll be parking at one of their two garages around 57th-59th street and University Ave. Most colleges have a "street" or "area" where all the restaurants are - is UC the same, and where is it? And once we find it, what's good and unique?
Northwest Phoenix
Our family lives in the Peoria/Glendale area, and while it's mostly chains some of them aren't too bad. We've had good steaks at Fleming's, enjoyed Carver's for more steaks and prime rib (Fleming's was better), and we've been to several REALLY casual Italian restaurants (3 Tomatoes, I wish I could remember the name of the other but it's at Bell & 83rd, maybe Terra something), and a more upscale Italian in North which was a short drive up the loop 101. We've also enjoyed Firebird's, I like their varied menu, I remember having a salmon with a nice fruity salsa that I enjoyed.
"Taste of Wynn" service
I called Wynn to make some dinner reservations - when I was reading about the "Taste of Wynn" it said "mention this when you make your reservation" - so I (might have foolishly) done so. I asked why it needed to be mentioned, and was told so the restaurant could be "prepared" for your request.
Now I'm worried - will that mean bad tables, bad service?
Peking Duck on the Strip
We're staying at the Venetian so would prefer something close by.
I've seen it on the menu at Wing Lei at Wynn ($69 pp), and also on the menu at TAO (around $65 FOR TWO) - literally half the price of Wing Lei. Why?
Any other suggestions?
Clos Maggiore
Ok, I've taken all the replies to heart, and have switched out Strada for Bocca di Lupo. Good choice? We really wanted an Italian after seeing the 39 Steps (near Piccadilly).
I'm keeping Masala Zone even though it is a chain because we're not that familiar with Indian food, had a very bad experience once at a one-off someplace else, and therefore feel more secure with a chain.
Still doesn't solve my dilemma of where to eat in lieu of Clos Maggiore. I've exhaustively looked at all the suggestions, and none tick my boxes of price, food, and atmosphere (I really, really don't like austere modern spaces, and unfortunately budget is a consideration). However, just in case we change our minds about that, I've made a reservation at Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley. Just resonated with me the way Clos Maggiore did. But I would of course prefer a not quite so pricey alternative.
So, better?
Reservations at Alinea
Their policy, to make a reservation for October, is to call on August 1. For the whole month of October.
I've made reservations at restaurants that, say, wanted you to call on August 1 for October 1, August 2 for October 2....
So it seems that while the phone lines might be really busy on August 1, you might have a better chance of getting your res because not EVERYONE is going to want, say, October 16...thoughts?
Clos Maggiore
Ok, I'll look up your recommendations for alternate Italian and Indian for those nights. Thanks.
Clos Maggiore
A "duff" selection? Without even knowing that particular British word I know I'm being insulted. Sheesh - looking at the overall big picture of where we are eating I think we have a very well-balanced week. Many of my choices are based on where we will be going to the theater that night - Strada is spitting distance of 39 Steps, so it fits perfectly in my plan. I'm so happy that many of you have unlimited deep pockets when you travel. I think we do quite well within our budget.
I lurk on this board quite frequently, yet whenever I post I'm reminded of why I don't do it that often.
