where is all the really good espresso in Atlanta?

In Buckhead, try Mae's Bakery on Lenox Rd. Otherwise, Octane, Dancing Goats, Steady Hand, Condessa.

Fun, good dinner restaurant in Downtown Atlanta?

Too late for this, but Lunacy Black Market and Social are my two downtown destinations of choice, both affordable, unique and very good.

San Francisco Hounds moving to Atlanta--what should we look forward to?

Much better farmers market than Piedmont Park is the Peachtree Rd one in Buckhead, also on Saturday mornings. There are many others around town (Grant Park, Morningside, Chamblee, etc.). Yes, the term "farmers market" here somehow took a dramatic turn from the notion of being a true farmers market, but BuHi and Your Dekalb are both really good international grocery stores.

Atlanta - Cakes & Ale, Miller Union or Empire State South, Which one?

I like all three, but Cakes & Ale has beat the others over our last few meals. Can't go wrong any which way.

Urban pL8; anyone been?

Yes, been many times for lunch. Great little spot in the old Pangaea space. Love the tofu curry, but everything is good.

Honey Pig is good, but if you have good Korean BBQ options or aren't specifically craving that, not worth going out of your way for.

New Bulleit 95 Rye Whiskey

Yes, did the side by side comparison in a Manhattan (it's also in the link above) - of the three, the Rittenhouse BIB took the prize in the Manhattan - I thought the Bulleit 95 was too mellow to stand up to the vermouth. To each his own, though.

New Bulleit 95 Rye Whiskey

Just picked up the new Bulleit 95 Rye, 95% rye mash, 90 proof, probably made at LDI who does Templeton Rye as well (though these are definitely not the same thing w a different label). It's a real nice sipping whiskey for $25, but is surprisingly lacking in rye character.

I did a little comparison w Rittenhouse BIB and Russell's Reserve at http://www.thirstysouth.com/2011/03/0...

The Rittenhouse BIB is a ridiculously good deal, picked mine up for $15. But hard to find. Russell's Reserve is also a good choice - more on the herbal side of rye than the other two - all depends on your taste preferences.

Good choices. I love sitting at the bar at Bacchanalia because you then get more freedom to pick and choose vs. a prix fixe. My past two visits to Woodfire have been great (another prix fixe though). I'm not a steakhouse fan, so I would choose something else - Holeman & Finch, Cakes & Ale, Miller Union, Abbatoir are all very good but also kinda similar to each other and to Woodfire and Bacchanalia in that they are all variations on the Southern farm to table theme. You might consider Chinese (Peter Cheng's or Tasty China), Korean, Vietnamese, etc. which all have great options along Buford Highway.

Lunch - Star is great for sandwiches (po boys especially) and for cheese/charcuterie. Other great lunch options would be Carver's (southern), Busy Bee (soul), or Community Q/Fox Brothers (bbq and great southern sides). Or banh mi up on Buford Highway (Quoc Huong or Lee's Bakery).

Atlanta Classic Cocktail Suggestions

Yep, H Harper Station is great for cocktails. Try the Bufala Negra.
Another favorite is Sound Table.

Peter Chang's new restaurant

Highly recommended. Tonight was our first trip back since (pre) opening night... they've punched up the Ma La and spice level in general considerably since opening, back to Tasty China levels. Ordered a ton of dishes tonight among 8 people, all very good, not a miss (though some dishes were not as great as on previous visit).

Sesame Bread - standard Tasty China
Black Ear Fungus (?) - a new dish for me, very nice, some kind of mushroom (I hope)
Fish and Cilantro rolls - always love these, light and crisp and clean
Beef and Cilantro - good stuff
Crispy Pork Belly - v good
Dry-Fried Small Fish - this now has crazy strong Ma La, maybe a bit too much, preferred the simpler version they prepared at opening
Sesame Smoked Tofu - not as good as opening for some reason, not sure why... still delicious though
Beef Dan Dan Noodles - v good
Cumin Lamb - v nice
Sichuan Lamb Chops - v nice, still slightly more done that I would prefer
Smoked Duck w Fried Onions - awesome, maybe favorite dish of the night
Fish and Tofu in Chili Oil - always love this, Tasty China standby
Pea Greens w Garlic - love it, so well done, so simple
Bok Choy w Mushrooms - another simple, great dish, and necessary next to all that meat/duck
Sesame Balls - a great rendition, these are fabulous and a must order

Service had its ups and downs, but was fine overall. Took in a couple growlers of beer from Athens' The Beer Growler (Port IPA, Southern Tier 2xIPA) and 2 bottles o wine, was charged $20 total corkage for the wine, nothing for the beer. No alcohol available to buy - no license yet??

drinks before Bacchanalia Saturday night

You can do well at the bar at Abattoir (and walk over to Bacchanalia), and JCT is not bad either. Best option (IMHO) is Holeman & Finch, or the bar at Restaurant Eugene if you want a more quiet environment. Miller Union is also a good place for a drink. If you like tequila, you can do a lot worse than Bone Garden Cantina not far from Bacchanalia.

Is Table 1280 worth a visit?

The chef from Top Chef is no longer at Table 1280 (I believe, they announced Gary Mennie is coming over), which might be a good thing rather than bad. That said, there are probably better options right now - Serpas or Ecco maybe. I'm not personally a fan of Rathbuns or Spice Market.

Other options assuming you want to stay fairly close to Midtown - Bocado, Miller Union, La Pietra.

Where do I find the best vegetarian food in Atlanta?

Not 100% vegetarian (about 99%), but Dynamic Dish is head and shoulders above anywhere else if you ask me. Get there now. Small menu, but the chef is seriously talented.

a hint - you can buy liquor online and ship it to atlanta. i bought some lagavulin at a reputable retailer based in new york for a fraction of the price i could find it here in ATL. do a google shopping search for what you want and see what shows up.

One meal in Atlanta, staying downtown, no car, willing to take taxi if under $10 each way

I'd go with Holeman & Finch, else Abbatoir. You can sit at the bar at either place. Both Southern, ingredient focused, great stuff.

Within a few blocks of the High Museum of Art? (For July 31, 2010)

A pub-ish place is TAP a block away, decent food, not great, good beer selection. Pretty good Thai food across the street from the High at Tamarind Seed.

If you like walking, several blocks further is Noon which is turning out some interesting food and great cocktails. Ecco is a good walk away but usually very good, especially the fried goat cheese with honey. Also still walkable is La Pietra Cucina for some very good progressive Italian.

Dark 'n' Stormy Recommendations?

Noon Midtown makes a variation called the Jack Sparrow (I think, something like that), that is really really good. Parish makes a straightforward one. Holeman & Finch and Drinkshop can definitely do you up right as well.

Sunday brunch and other meals/food destinations near Midtown

Yep, Holeman & Finch for cocktails is a great choice. An interesting choice w a totally different vibe (and nearby Fox) is Noon Midtown, who has some great cocktails. Also, downtown a bit at the W is Drinkshop, on par with Holeman & Finch plus wins style points for hand carved ice for each drink.

Solo Dining recommendation near W hotel midtown? First Time to Atlanta!

If you want to walk, your best option would be South City Kitchen, sit at the bar. If you take a car/cab, go to Carver's or Busy Bee for lunch and Holeman and Finch for cocktails and dinner.
