A less-sweet pecan pie

Not traditional, but quite good. Try making it in a quiche dish so it doesn't try to be traditional:

BUTTERMILK PECAN PIE

3 eggs
1 1/3 cup sugar
2 T flour
8 T SALTED Butter, melted
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup pecan pieces (chopped)
1 -- 10-inch unbaked pie crust

Preheat oven to 275º

Beat eggs with a whisk. Add sugar and flour, beat well. Add melted buter, buttermilk and vanilla. Stir well.

Sprinkle pecans evenly into crust, pour in egg mixture.

Bake about 1 hour or until golden brown and set.

Nathan's hotdogs

There wasa Nathan's/Arthur Treachers combo restaurant at the corner of Ocean Gate and Rosecrans.

I ate there.

It is now closed.

It wasn't because I ate there.

Atrocious! As much as I like the Nathan's packaged dogs I buy at Pavilions or Ralphs, I threw out the overcooked, salty dog served to me at Nathan's.

Overcooked means shriveled, not charred which I love.

The only good part was the cooked red onions that I wish were available other places.

Whatdya Put Hot Sauce On?

I used to sell hot sauce in my now defunct shop so I have a ton of different varieties.

All kinds on eggs.

I still have several bottles of Inner Beauty and ration it to only Egg McMuffins. Wish they'd bring it back!

Love a good vinegar based sauce on rice like Texas Pete's or any of the Louisiana Brand sauces.

All different kinds on fried chicken or fish depending on the taste I feel like at the time.

A ground chili based sauce is terrific on grilled chicken breasts.

The Island sauces are terrific in cream pasta sauces.

Wish Mexican restaurants would bring back their hot sauces as pico de gallo isn't a hot sauce.

Tabasco is only used in cooking for me.

Costco believe it or not.

They sell the loaf. Boil it in a little water with carrots and onions and it's great. Or just slice and eat... also great.

ISO recipes for salad dressings

Homemade Salad Dressing that replicates a dressing that was served at Piccolo's in Los Angeles that is sadly gone.

1/2 egg, beaten
1 1/2 Tb. Mayonnaise
1 1/2 Tsp. Salt
3/4 Tsp. freshly ground pepper
1 1/2 Tb. Worcestershire sauce
Dash of Cayenne pepper
1 cup + 2 T vegetable oil
¼ cup red wine vinegar
1 ½ T Yellow Mustard
2 T sour cream

Whisk the first six ingredients to completely blend. Dribble in, (while whisking), 1 cup plus 2 Tb. Vegetable oil. Similar to making a homemade Mayonnaise, this mixture will emulsify and thicken. As the mixture thickens, you can add the oil in more of a stream.

To the above emulsified mixture, gently whisk in 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar, 1 1/2 Tb. French's mustard, and 3 Tb. Sour Cream

Great on a wedge with shaved Parmesan

In Search of Mabo Ramen

But not any Mabo Ramen... only Mabo Ramen like the long gone Yokohama Ramen (Gateway and Barrington) served.

Thick, spicy, and oh so good

I've tried many places, but none come even close to replicating the taste.

Anyone know of a place that serves such Mabo Ramen in the Los Angeles area?

I miss it so much!

Anna's in WLA to Close (not that most of you will care)

Worked 13 years right across the street from Anna's. Loved the short rib special for lunch. I've eaten there several times in the last few years. Something about an old timey Italian restaurant that will be lost with their closing.

A good Charcoal Grill?

Try any of the dealers on Ventura Bl. It's a special order item and will take at least 4 weeks for delivery.

The new 26" in quite a nice grill if you haven't looked at it. It's on our floor right now.

Portable Gas Grill

Rassmussen did NOTHING for me. I called the mfg and the woman who answered the phone said that "she'd heard that."

Still no help.

I gave it to my brother who can make it work for him. He's going to build a wind block. That shouldn't have to be done.

Weber Grills -- Has Quality Declined?

Very interesting read. I owned a barbecue shop for 15 years and now I'm an employee of the same store.

The Webers that are made in China are only the Spirits.

Weber owns Ducane which is made in China.

The black paint on the inside of your hood is indeed a build up of the vaporing process of grilling. It is NOT paint. Do some maintanence on your grill and you won't have the problem.. It doesn't take care of itself.

When you buy a new grill find out about parts availability. If you can't get parts, your new grill is disposable rather than fixable. In otherwords you might as well trash it because it can't be repaired without parts.

Weber has always stocked parts and you will never have a problem there.

Jennaire? The name was sold and the current manufacturer is not the old company. Same with Charmglow. Home Depot happens to own that name.

Vermont Castings? The Home Depot VC is not the same as that sold at barbecue stores. We can repair those that we sell. We can not repair the HD VCs unless you get us the parts. They are specially made for the Home Depot.

Another thing, do you really think that all of your made in the USA grills are made here? Well they are, but you have no idea where the parts come from.

To answer the first question... Weber is still a fine barbecue. Even the
Chinese made Spirits are good quality. If they weren't, Weber wouldn't be putting their name on it.

Chutney's on Pico/Barrington

Closer to 20 years ago.

I think there has been two or more owners since Neela.

For awhile an English woman owned it I think.

Neela sold to open Bombay Cafe when it was in the corner mini mall on Santa Monica Bl.
