Good Value Recommendations In Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns and Brisbane?

Hi there

Welcome to Australia! I write a Brisbane food blog called Brisbane Food Adventures (www.brisbanefoodadventures.blogspot.com) which might give you some ideas.

Thinking about where you're going to be - definitely check out the southbank restaurants on Little Stanley and Grey Street which are close to GOMA.

Someone suggested Bamboo Basket which I agree is fantastic but it is a little expensive for asian. The cheapest asian nearby is in Chinatown in Fortitude Valley but you may not go there if you are sticking to the city and southbank.

If you go to Bamboo Basket, order the Xiao Long Bau (soup dumplings) YUM! If you're in that area though, and you want a cheap but high quality meal you NEED to go to Piaf. It is a small French bistro across the road from Bamboo Basket. The meals are delicious and the prices amazing. You can get food for under $25 there. Also the wine is not too expensive. If Piaf is too full, nearby is the Sardine Tin which is owned by the same people. It's a tiny but cute wine bar with some tapas and a meal special.

Nearby is Beastie Burgers which sell really yummy and cheap (like $15?) burgers. Try the Tandoori "Tech Support" burger.

La Via Pizzeria nextdoor is also good.

There is also a good sushi train attached to the movie theatre called "Ginga" which isn't too expensive. Satay Hut sux. and DO NOT GO TO DELL UGO!! It is an extremely expensive a not very nice Italian restaurant.

No need to tip in Australia - although some people do.

Have fun!

Thanks stopurmakingmehungry - only 2 months to go and I can't wait! Glad to hear you liked Bris-vegas. I love it. We are a lot more casual and friendly than Sydney-siders and Melburnians! If you ever come back, ask me for restaurant recomms!

Jewish Food [split from Manhattan]

As far as I'm aware, being Jewish is not just a religion but a cultural identity recognised throughout the world. It would seem many of the people on this board seem to agree. Of course I'm no expert - which is why I've asked for advice on this message board.

Of course there are Jews in Australia, but not very many at all. I have only met one in my life when I lived in Melbourne. Contrast that to the amount of people I know who are Greek, Italian and Indian (and the corresponding amounts of restaurants in Australia - or Queensland where I live). That is because there are much larger amounts of those people in Australia. In the last 15 years there has been an influx of African (mainly Sudanese) immigrants into Brisbane and there have been a few African restaurants that have sprung up in Moorooka as a result which has been great.

Thanks for your link to the website. There appears to be no Jewish restaurants in Queensland (where Brisbane is - my hometown) only a deli or two that sells kosher products. There seem to be a few restaurants and cafes in Melbourne and Sydney which I might have to check out on my next trip there but Brisbane is a long way from those cities.

The reason I want to seek out this cuisine in NY is because it is something you do not get very much in Australia and I'm interested in trying new things on my trip across the US. I've also heard it's delicious.

Jewish food

I'm an Australian Food Blogger (http://www.brisbanefoodadventures.blo...) visiting NYC in the first week of October 2011 and I'm wanting to try authentic Jewish food as there is none in Australia. Where should I go? I'll be staying with friends in the Meatpacking District.

What other kinds of food are distinctive to NYC? Where should a food tourist got to feast in the big city?

Cheers

Authentic food in New Orleans, Lafayetteville, Vicksburg, Natchez, Memphis

I'm an Australian food blogger (https://www.brisbanefoodadventures.bl...) doing a USA roadtrip in Sept/Oct 2011.

I'm doing a roadtrip from New Orleans to Memphis in late September and would love to try real downhome foods on my trip. What are the signature dishes for the above towns? And what are the best restaurants to eat them at?

Where do I buy the best Po boy in New Orleans?

Looking forward to some recommendations from locals

San Fran Food

I'm an Australian food blogger (http://www.brisbanefoodadventures.blo...) visiting San Francisco in September 2011 for a weekend.

I really want to experience what food San Fran has to offer. So what makes San Francisco food different to anywhere else? What is the signature food? Where should I eat to try the real taste of San Fran?

Also where is the best sourdough in San Fran?

Hope to hear some interesting suggestions from locals

Cheers
