Goldsboro, NC - Quality Dining Recs - HELP!

Chef and the Farmer would be my recommendation, as well.

Nelson's barbeque in Lumberton NC - open?

It's closed, according to BBQ Jew. Given your other data points, I would take it as gospel.

NC now allows rare burgers!

Odd.

Here all the restaurants seem to take the Potemkin Village approach: they ask you how you want your burger cooked and bring you a well done burger, regardless of what you asked for.

authentic Mexican tortillas in New Bern NC

You might also, in the course of checking these places out, look for a copy of Enlace or some other Latino flyer or newspaper. Enlace is particular is good even if you can't read Spanish, because it's full of big, full color ads with lots of photos. It's good for getting a sense of which of these places has what. I would find the largest supermercado(preferably with a carniceria attached) and start there. I live in Greenville and there are two tortillerias here- they aren't uncommon.

If by some chance you strike out in New Bern, the inland areas to your west- southern Lenoir and Wayne counties- have large Latino populations and would be worth looking into if you're having a major craving. Ayden wouldn't be far for you either, and I know there's a tortilleria there.

authentic Mexican tortillas in New Bern NC

Last I was in New Bern, there were a bunch of Mexican/Latino markets on 55. One of them should have a tortilleria, although of the tortillerias I've been to in eastern NC, none have had flour tortillas, only corn.

New in and around Greenville, NC

I'd advise going to that chicken and waffles thing on the double if it appeals- that location is a revolving door and seems much too big/expensive for such a niche concept- chicken and waffles plus high end bar- to be successful.

best BBQ in Raleigh NC

Cobb's actually has excellent collards and killer little mini pecan and sweet potato pies for dessert- but they aren't open early in the week, either.

IIRC, B's is not open on Monday.

BBQ IN NC

I think brentk is suggesting correlation, not causation.

BBQ IN NC

People in eastern NC(who aren't barbecue aficionados) tend to call it "Western style".

american chinese food cravings?

What I crave sometimes and cannot get is fried chicken. The Chinese takeout in my hometown did an insanely good leg quarter+pofryri combo. I see chicken wings at all Chinese places these days, but never larger pieces of chicken anymore.

My second favorite was/is General Tso's. These days I put Annie Chun's gochujang on it. SO good.

New woodcooker in Lumberton

BBQ Jew had a post last week saying this place has closed.

Questions about Lexington #1 BBQ

"I had red slaw in my Albemarle elementary school."

Someone should have called social services.

Abbreviated NC BBQ Tour

Wilber's and Grady's are both quite good. It really depends on what route you prefer and when you'll be traveling. The places listed are all pretty close in quality.

Abbreviated NC BBQ Tour

Greenville:

Definitely the Skylight Inn. My other regular place is Blackbeard's, in Conetoe(about 30 minutes from Greenville).

I think Bum's is overrated. I would go to B's or Jack Cobb's before I went to Bum's. Between B's and Cobb's, I'd pick the latter.

Blackbeard's is Thu-Sun only and Cobb's is something like Wed, Fri, and Sat.

Beefmastor Inn - Wilson, NC

Too bad. I'm not aware of any new steak places opening in Greenville, but I've been busy and haven't read the Reflector in a while so could have missed something.

I was going to eat at the Beefmastor a couple of months ago on the way home from Rembrandt, but the wait was really long and we were starving and didn't feel like waiting.

New in and around Greenville, NC

Greenville wants for really good options here, I think. Basil's has some interesting "infused" burgers which are just patties with various other things mixed in, but good. One of them that I had was quite good, but I forget the name of it. I want to say it had balsamic vinegar on it.

Andy's and Cubbies are alright for what they are trying to do. I know some folks that swear by Ernie's, but it's been so long for me that I can't say. I do really like Blackbeard's "Mess Burger" although that is not in town- but worth the drive, I would say.

Chinatown in RTP?

Chitlins are cooked and served in a vinegar and pepper sauce. Also, I've read that the Chinese like pork and vinegar combinations. Our brothers from another mother...

Chinatown in RTP?

"The tripe had a vinegar-based sauce which struck me as a little odd at first, but grew on me."

Odd that it was vinegar based, or was there something else unusual about it?

North Carolina BBQ TOUR

"NC q is direct heat, some use wood to cook it with, and if that's what you want to call smoked, then so be it."

Cooking over direct heat will tend to produce more smoke than using indirect heat, so yes, I would call something cooked over direct heat "smoked".

Chinatown in RTP?

Exactly. It's an anachronism.

Eastern NC - Fried Herring

I had the squash and onions when I was there last week- really, really good stuff.

Eastern NC - Fried Herring

Yeah. I'm not a big fan of the Filling Station.

Why Yelp Sucks!

And open themselves up to lawsuits from users who subsequently acquired carpal tunnel syndrome? I think not!

Eastern NC - Fried Herring

I was at Blackbeard's last week and they had them.

Thread Moving Nonsense

Recently, I started this thread:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/829687

The subject was twofold: a store-branded soup found in a regional grocery store chain, and a question as to the true identity of the soup and/or some similar recipes. I posted the thread on my regional board because the grocery store in question is peculiar to this region. Thus, people in other areas won't have a clue as to what I am talking about and will be unable to help- which reduces the utility of the thread to a numerical value which is rather close to zero, I'm afraid.

Moving threads like this which rely on regional or local knowledge is foolish and you should stop it. I realize that this thread is unlikely to produce a satisfactory resolution, but I cannot resist the impulse to point and laugh every time foolishness like this takes place. You would do yourselves credit if you stopped.

Harris Teeter Organic Moroccan Lentil/Chickpea Soup

Yes, that's it- there's a selection of store branded microwaveables which are generally pretty good.

Harris Teeter Organic Moroccan Lentil/Chickpea Soup

Moved before I could respond. Lovely.

I will have to have a look at the ingredients, although typically these are unhelpful, not listing specific spices, etc. There isn't any chicken, IIRC- I believe it's vegetarian. My thinking was that the recipe wasn't created from whole cloth, but rather renamed for marketing purposes, in the way that I'd expect that she-crab soup would become Charleston Crab Soup or some such if you sold it far enough afield.

Harris Teeter Organic Moroccan Lentil/Chickpea Soup

I've acquired a minor addiction to this stuff, but it is ridiculously expensive for what you get. Does anyone have a line on a similar recipe that I could make at home?

North Carolina BBQ TOUR

Well, if you don't like skin, Pete Jones certainly isn't for you. Bum's certainly has a following; I just don't see the appeal. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but with Pete Jones literally right down the road, Bum's holds no appeal.

North Carolina BBQ TOUR

I'd add Blackbeard's and remove Bum's. Bum's reputation really rests on its sides, and the ones at Blackbeard's are just as good, and they have great barbecue. I'm not a fan of Bum's barbecue.
