The best chocolate chip cookie in Toronto?

Kind of, but the batter is chocolate, not vanilla.

The best chocolate chip cookie in Toronto?

Xococava's chocolate chip cookie is dark, moist and decadent... love it!

You have $10 for a meal, where do you go in Toronto?

Airima's in the St. Clair Centre at Yonge, in the basement near the entrance to the subway. Delicious bibimbap - $9.49 with brown rice, $8.49 with white rice.

Do you remember the first steak you had?

I too have been eating steak since before I can remember. My mom once told me that when she introduced it to me, mixed/puréed with mashed potatoes, I kept saying "miam! miam! miam!" (I'm French!) - I could not speak yet, but sure loved that steak!

Celery plus a lot of leaves!

Celery leaves (and of course stalks) are great in a Persian celery stew call Koresh e Karafs.

Panier Rouge - Yonge and St. Clair

I forgot to add that one thing I think is missing from their packaging is a list of ingredients. If I had food allergies, there's no way I could eat there without asking tons of questions to staff.

Peppermint: my mistake: salad price was $8, not $9, but still. The more I think about it the steeper the price seems.

They did have two soups today: carrot/ginger/squash and oven-roasted red pepper. I went for the salad instead.

Coffee and "fancy" teas (a French brand I can't remember), and very basic pastries: muffins, cookies. Delica has much better options in my opinion - I looove their carrot cake.

Panier Rouge - Yonge and St. Clair

Seeing as I could not find posts on this new place on CH, I decided to check it out for myself.

Prêt à manger fans: rejoice. Panier Rouge is very similar to it, but on a smaller scale.

My meal: ceasar salad ($8) and petite chicken and herb sandwich ($3.25) - total with tax: $12.71

The salad: good sized portion, presented in a cardboard box. The lettuce is crispy, but slightly brown where the knife cut it. Garnished with thinly sliced onion (easy to remove), cheese shavings (not sure what kind, but tasty), a wedge of lemon (nice!), and the most disappointing croutons I've ever eaten (due to the fact that they are limp). Dressing is in a separate container, which is great.

The sandwich is the "baby" version of a bigger size. It is served on very fresh and soft multigrain bread (Country Harvest maybe), and garnished with lettuce, tomatoes, a few slices of cooked chicken (I think fresh, not the cold-cut variety), and an herb sauce (not mayonnaise as far as I can tell). Very good and fresh.

There are lots of beverage choices, but not too many dessert options.

Will I go back? yes, because I'm curious and want to try other sandwich varieties.

Did I love it? no. It was good, but not that great.

At prices similar to Delica's, I still prefer Delica.

Sophisticated no-refrigeration potluck/barbecue dessert ideas please

How about special chocolate chip cookies? Kimberley Boyce, in her book Good to the Grain, has a killer whole wheat chocolate chip cookie recipe. I made them with chopped high-quality dark orange-flavored chocolate instead of "regular" chocolate chips, and added orange zest to the batter. Within 15 minutes, 6 dozens of them had been devoured by the cast of the show I was part of last winter. Warning: the cookies are way better the same day they are baked. You can freeze the dough and bake later.

Mozza Bar's brussel sprouts salad: shredded sprouts, piave shavings, crispy speck, green apple, and "roasted honey" vinaigrette. Amazing!

A question about propane grill BTU requirements

Thanks monopod. That's helpful!

A question about propane grill BTU requirements

I am considering changing my grill and have a question about BTUs. I need a small grill that will fit on my small balcony. Currently, I own an $80 grill with 26,000 BTUs for a 280 sq. in. grill surface. It is an inexpensive model and I don't find it grills particularly well (it has lots of very hot and very cold spots, so you need to keep moving the food around so it will cook without carbonizing).

Master Chef 280: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/2/OutdoorLiving/BBQs/PropaneBBQs/PRDOVR~0853001P/Master+Chef+280+Stationary+Propane+BBQ.jsp?locale=en

I have found a Coleman Even Heat Small Space model on sale at Canadian Tire. This particular model has a 30,000 BTU output for a grill that is 315 sq. in. (the specs give a larger grill size, but that includes the bun warmer, which I choose not to consider for my calculation).

Coleman: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/2/OutdoorLiving/BBQs/PropaneBBQs/PRD~0853046P/Coleman+Even+Heat+Small+Spaces+Stainless-Steel+BBQ.jsp?locale=en

My question is: is my problem with my current grill one of BTUs, or of heat distribution?

Your input is much appreciated, thanks in advance!

ISO: Etobicoke's equivalent of Diana's Seafood

Can anyone recommend a good fishmonger in West Toronto (Etobicoke, East Mississauga, Mimico)? We used to go to Diana's when we lived in the East End but find it quite far now that we live in Mimico...
Looking forward to your recommendations!

Proper Tea Party for Fifteen, Would Love Suggestions

great suggestions on what to have and what not to have, and what a great idea to celebrate a birthday!

just a note on crumpets: I really was not successful with mason jar rings, as the batter stuck to the part of the ring that fits on top of the jar. I personally would not recommend using these.

in terms of foods, I really enjoy having a few pieces of fruit with tea (strawberries and the like) - it gives a nice reprieve from all that starch :)

good luck!

Desperately ISO herbal coffee for weaning off morning coffee, hopefully located in the GTA...

David's Tea has a few "coffee replacements" in their line - the Coffee Pu'erh is really nice and "coffee-y". You can go to the store and purchase a 25 g bag of it, which won't cost very much and will contain enough tea to brew a few cups and see if you like it. Good luck!

Help creating a weekend menu !

You received lots of very useful advice already, but I can tell you that sometimes easy does it. What we really like to do for "special meals away from home" is a piccadita (he's Argentine, and that's his way of calling it). Basically, a "snacks table". We were at the hotel over the weekend and had this: prosciutto, pretzels, crackers, baguette, brie, smoked oysters, cantaloupe, mixed berries, a spinach salad with strawberries, and a truffle chocolate cake. We bought everything at the local supermarket (which was not very fancy but had all the basics), didn't have plates or ustensils (other than the plastic ones provided by the supermarket), but we did eat very well (and drank too much!)...

Here's a picture of another one of our piccaditas: http://patechinoisetcie.blogspot.com/2008/01/bonne-anne-et-notre-pr-rveillon-du-jour.html

Bottom line is, like the others have said: have fun and try not to slave over in the kitchen! :)

Non cupcake/bar/cookie recipe needed for intimate Christmas dinner party

Chocolate mousse with berries? pavlova? A tray of fine and fancy chocolates with berries (à la chocolate tasting)? profiteroles? poached pears with cookies... all can be mostly be made in advance and are quite easy to prepare

what is this?

Maybe if you give us the list of ingredients we'd be able to deduct what molla is?

Pumpkin recipes (canned or fesh)

I make baked pumpkin oatmeal and pumpkin-oats smoothies that make my oatmeal-hater husband eat it (miracle of miracles!)

The oatmeal is not very sweet at all - I would recommend to sweeten as desired.

Baked pumpkin oatmeal - 4 generous servings
1 c. pumpkin
1 3/4 c. milk (any one you like, dairy or not)
1 egg
1 1/2 c. rolled oats (would work with other flakes also)
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c. dried fruit of your choice (sour cherries are wonderful, as are cranberries and chopped apricots)

Mix well and pour into a 9-inch square pan. Bake at 350 until set (probably 30-45 mins). If desired, sprinkle with sugar and "brûlée".

Pumpkin-oats smoothie (2 servings)
(hopefully better than the one you had and didn't like!)

2 c. milk of your choice (dairy or not)
1/2 c. one-minute oats
1/2 c. pumpkin
1 banana (a ripe pear also works well)
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
vanilla to taste
A few medjool dates to sweeten if you want - as many as you like

Warm 1 c. of milk and stir in oats. Let stand for about 10-15 minutes, to soften the flakes. Add the rest of ingredients and blend well, using the blending device of your choice - Magic Bullet, immersion blender or blender. This makes a flavorful, not too sweet and very creamy smoothie that "goes down well", as says the husband.

Where can I buy coconut sugar in Toronto?

I bought some at Pusateri's a few months ago

President's Choice Black Label

I tried the belgian waffle cookies with vanilla cream. Not cheap at $4.99 for 6 cookies, but worth every penny. Very buttery, wonderful with a nice espresso after dinner. Purchased at St. Clair Market

Vegetarian chopped liver

I have used the Moosewood recipe successfully by using shredded carrots instead of green beans and it makes a very tasty paté. Not "chopped-livery", but very good nevertheless.

Was gifted a Presto PS-10 meat slicer - now what?

Gift from The Man for my birthday... a Presto PS-10 meat slicer. A great-looking machine, but I'm just not sure what my possibilities are... what do you use yours for? or what do you wish you had one for? And, very importantly: how do you clean it??? It is a great, but unexpected, gift and I'm not too sure of what I'll use it for other than slicing prosciutto and other cold cuts. Looking forward to your ideas!

English-style Blood Sausage in Toronto/GTA - where to find?

Great! Thanks for this :)

English-style Blood Sausage in Toronto/GTA - where to find?

I'm looking for the English - not Eastern European - style and I'm ready to travel a reasonable distance within the GTA to find some...
TIA!

Please recommend a great lunch spot between Montreal and Quebec City

You're asking for a lot I think, as there isn't much between Montréal and Québec City. Will you be traveling on the 20 or the 40? If you are on the 40, you can stop at L'Angélus in Deschambault (roughly halfway, but a bit closer to Québec City). Trois-Rivières has a lot of restaurants but nothing spectacular that I'm aware of (though I might be completely wrong since I haven't lived there in several years). The downtown area of Trois-Rivières is the place where you'll likely find non-chain restaurants.

If you're traveling on the 20, I'm afraid I'm of no help, since I never drive on the South Shore.

Happy travels!

Beef Wellington in Québec City

Heading to Québec City this weekend and have a special request from The Man - where can we get beef wellington in Québec City? We've had it at the Château Frontenac at their lunch buffet, but not sure if 1) it is always available there and 2) other places make a better version of it.

Thanks in advance!

The Perfect (Foolproof) Buttercream Recipe?

Pandora, without having read the threads you are referring to, I'm highly recommending Dorie Greenspan's buttercream recipe from Baking: from my home to yours. It works and is very clearly written. I found it really reassuring that she mentions something like: it will look like you failed the recipe but keep beating! it will come together. That's exactly what happened to me when I made it and without that reassuring note, I would have thought I had ruined the batch and started all over again. Good luck!

Weekday Brunch on Bloor West with easy parking nearby

In the "not fancy but decent to good" category, Bread and Roses and Dr. Generosity. Avoid Bloom, I paid a fortune for dessicated eggs and spinach served with attitude there. Sharky's was not a good experience either - attitude, food very so-so, just not pleasant.
