Need new "big gift" kitchen tool/appliance

I think the kitchen aid would be worth it. It makes baking easier and more enjoyable, so maybe you would do it more? I don't make much bread, but I love it for cookies and cakes, its so much easier when you can just set it to cream the butter and sugar and walk away, then come back and add the other ingredients. Its nice to have both hands free. Plus it really comes in handy if you bake a lot for the holidays.

How about an induction hob? I have been thinking about one just to see what induction is all about but I don't really know if it would get used.

Do you drink a lot of coffee? How about a Keurig? I have had mine for about a year now and I love it.

Do you have a good enameled dutch oven?

How do I clean this?

Have you tried just soaking in hot water & dawn? Dawn makes a good product called power dissolver that works great on tough grease but I don't know if it would be safe for the enamel or not. It worked to get the grease splatters from a deep fryer off of some appliances and the backsplash, but I acidentally wiped some of the lettering/numbers off my toaster.
Just curious why you didn't take the sticker off the bottom before using it?

When a sale is not a sale.

One thing I have noticed.......you can get a pretty good deal on "try me" or promo pieces. I have not seen any promo pieces from LC, but I have seen several staub deals. One was you get 2 free mini cast iron cocottes with an oval(5 or 6 qt, I think) cocotte. You can get a 6.5qt round oven for $199, which is the regular price of the 5qt. They have a braiser promo piece that I have considered buying but decided I don't need. I like the staub promo pieces, but a lot of the time I have noticed other companies' promo pieces are not a piece of cookware that I would need/wan't to use very often.

When a sale is not a sale.

I have noticed this a lot too. Pretty much everywhere carries LC and Staub pieces at a "sale" price, all the time. Like you said, it is not MSRP, so they call it a sale. I would be interested if these things ever actually go on sale, other than the factory store sales.

Help! Chipped enamel on LeCreuset

It is safe to use, it is just bare cast iron exposed, which is safe to cook in. I don't know about repairing.

Le Creuset Sales / Pricing

There is no le creuset outlet close to where I live. Do any online sources put it on sale around Christmas or any other time? The going rate for a 5.5qt round oven seems to be about $240, and the 3.5qt braiser is about $204 everywhere. I am wondering if there is any chance they go on sale cheaper around the holidays.

Need help with my Staub pot

There is a cookbook called 'All About Braising' that has recipes that would work in your cocotte. Also, just searching around online you should be able to find tons of recipes. Just look for "braising recipes" or "dutch oven recipes". There is also a recipe for no-knead bread that you can make in a cocotte.

Does anyone else use an iced tea maker?

We have one. Don't know where it came from, but it never gets used. I think it is much easier to just boil water in a pot. I use the big luzianne tea bags for iced tea. I only boil half as much water as I need, steep the tea, then dilute it with cold water, so it is good to drink over ice in only a few minutes.

Staub colors @ Sur La Table

There is a lot of variance in pics online. The Titanium staub pics on some websites look similar to the fumee pics on SLT. I have never seen either in person, I wish there were stores around here that carried Staub and LeCreuset. Personally I think I prefer Graphite Grey to either fumee or titanium based on pictures. That La Mer is awesome though.

Staub colors @ Sur La Table

I never knew those colors existed. Thanks for tempting me. I like that La Mer, I'll have to consider that when I find an excuse to buy another piece. Wonder what the difference between Fumee & Titanium is?

Which stainless brand do you prefer?

I am happy with my JCPenney cooks tri-ply SS cookware. Never really used any other brand though, haven't felt the need to yet. I might have gone with tramontina, but there wan nowhere that I could go to actually feel/hold it. For just boiling pasta/rice, I don't think you'll find much difference in any brand.

Cast iron skillet and steak

I don't know what the problem is. I use the method described by Alton Brown. Put the skillet in the oven, preheat to 500. Once the oven is preheated, take it out and set it on a burner on high. Throw the steak in to sear, about 30 seconds to a minute on each side, then into the oven for a few minutes on each side depending on how done you want it. I've never had a problem with stuff burning onto the pan.

Do you throw the steak in and not ouch it until it browns? Maybe the burned on bits are from trying to move it before it naturally releases?

A few questions about Staub cocotte

The 6qt oval is a good size, in my opinion. The shape best for you I guess depends on how you will use it. I think the oval is more diverse because it is good for oblong cuts of meat as well as shorter cuts. I have no problems with using it on the stove or the oven, but if you will be using it on the stovetop more often, round might be better since it won't overhang the burner. I haven't cooked a chicken in mine yet, but one definitely would fit. I have cooked chuck roast with veggies, beef stew, pork shoulder roast, no knead bread, soups, etc....I have never felt it was too small.

Stovetop smoker -- any experience?

I don't have any experience with a stovetop smoker, but your post reminded me of this little smoking gun I saw on the WS website. Might interest you:

A few questions about Staub cocotte

Hi. I can't help you on the issue of weather the color is solid or gradient for the cherry, but I can tell you that there is an online retailer that offers the cherry 6 qt oval cocotte with 2 free mini cocottes. That is a good deal because those mini ones are $50 each. I think it is cutlery and more that has it. I don't think they are counterfeit, there are a lot of pieces I see on other websites that are not on the staub website. I have the grenadine and is is a beautiful color. Mine is a 6qt oval with the rooster knob. There are also sites that have the grenadine with the 2 bonus cocottes, but it was sold out everywhere I looked.
If you decide to go with the grenadine, chefsresource has a 6.5 round at a promo price of $199. That is where I ordered mine from. Whatever color you decide to go with, you will be happy with the performance and the beauty. I am trying to find an excuse to but something in graphite or basil. Maybe blue too, lol.

Food Storage Options

The rubbermaid containers with easy find lids are great. They come in all different sizes. The containers nest inside eachother and the lids snap together, plus the base of the container snaps to the top of the lid. They also have them in glass if you prefer glass instead of plastic.

Share your recent cookware/kitchen-related purchases here!

Not much lately.....I got some knives on clearance. At JC Penney, I had a $10 off coupon. They had a $30 chefs knife marked down to 12, so I got it for 2 bucks. Then I also found some at wal mart...a BHG 2pc knife set with a chefs knife and utility knife from $39 to $5, and a carving set of the same price down to $7. I also bought a pair of tongs with the silicone coating the ends to use in my staub and nonstick pans.

Cookware from Cutlery and More?

Thanks Jay.

BTW...Chef's Resource has an offer for a free le creuset stockpot when you spend a certain amount on LC.

Cookware from Cutlery and More?

Never ordered from them but I can recommend Chef's Resource. I bought my staub from their website. Another site had it cheaper....and they beat that price by a few bucks (I bought it here rather than the other site because they had a few more things I was buying). They have free shipping and the also have le creuset. I am trying to come up with an excuse to buy another piece. I think I want the LC 3.5qt braiser or a 5.5qt round oven. Just don't know what would go nice with my grenadine staub.

Looking for new SS cookware. Need oppinions

I also have no problem cleaning the glass lids. They also have a little hole in them to help let steam out, so you don't have to worry about setting the lid a little off the pot for ventilation. Also, for normal use, the lids are pretty durable. I have never dropped one, but they are tough enough to be turned upside down and stacked on, and they can handle being banged around a bit.

new all-clad copper core anyone?

I have wondered if there is really any benefit to the copper core, since you would have thinner layers of metal compared to tri ply where you would have a thicker core of just aluminum.

Sauce Pans (Lodge) and frying food questions (newbie)

Check out this set from walmart on clearance for $199. You get a mix mix of enameled and bare cast iron, stainless steel, and hard anodized. You can play around and decide what you like for probably less that it would cost to buy the separate pieces.

Current Collection | Ideal Collection

I just started getting into cooking so I don't have much.
A few months ago I bought a set of try ply stainless steel cookware with an aluminum core, which I am very happy with.
I also just got a 6 qt oval Staub french oven.

If money was not an issue, I would get a good set of copper cookware, just because I like the look.
I would also add more staub pieces and also get some le creuset pieces, including a few different sizes of dutch ovens, and I would also like to get one of the buffet casseroles.

I probably will actually buy some of the staub and le creuset pieces as I get money. I can't just buy them all at once, plus I have to think about what will actually get used. The copper....I don't see myself getting any time soon. It is beautiful to look at, even when it has the aged look, but I don't really do any fancy cooking that would require that level of temperature control, so I am not willing to spend that kind of money.

I am actually really happy with my try ply set. It is JC Penney cooks brand. I got it on sale for nearly half price. The only thing I would change is I wish the set would have came with a 10" and 12" pan instead of 8" and 10". But I can always keep my eyes out for a good deal on a 12" pan.
