Cupid's Hot Dogs MIA

The Van Nuys location has closed. It was only there for a couple of years. So sad. But, the Reseda, Northridge and Simi Valley locations are still there.

Looking for a Good Taquero for a Party- Recommendations?

The little market store has not been there for a long time. I know they opened a taqueria in LA a few years ago, and I went a couple of times, but not sure if it is still there. In addition to the above-mentioned phone numbers (not sure if they still work), I have one more for you: (909) 873-0703. If you can get a hold of them, they are the nicest people with delicious food. Good luck!! His name is Fernando and his wife is Isaura.

I am leaning towards missing it this year. Went to the other two - preferred the first one, of course.

Mr Taster is leaving Los Angeles!

For the year I went to school in Norway (when I was in 11th grade, so go with me on this) I missed Taco Bell the most. That and Root Beer!! You should have seen me when we took a trip to Sweden and I found Dr. Pepper in the store!!! ;-)

Monrovia to Long Beach for Breakfast on Sunday?

Thank you everyone for your recs. I ended up at The Nest (with Johnny Reb's, Bellflower, at 3 minutes from The Nest as a back-up). The Nest is a cute space painted white with naked old-fashioned lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling. I arrived around 8:40 and got street parking right in front, but the restaurant itself was pretty full with only 2 tables and the counter area available. However, 5 minutes after I got there, there were 3 parties waiting. I ordered the Breakfast Poutine with an over-easy egg with the bacon waffle as my small plate (the poutine came with a choice of small plate). The poutine made of those small square-shaped potatoes (asked for well done) with sausage gravy, cheddar and an egg on top. I thought it was very good as that kind of stuff is right up my alley. However, the waffle was absolutely sublime. I almost got a whole order to go. It was so good! Bill, before tip, came to $9 and change.
Service was good and efficient. Owner stopped by everyone's table to ask how everything was and wished me a good day when I left. I was out of there by 9:20.
So, I ended up not getting what I had originally planned on getting but was very pleased with my choices. I definitely plan on going back with a whole order of the bacon waffles at the top of the list. I hear their custard french toast is also amazing. I will also have to try the deep fried biscuit and gravy! Thank you, Local, for this rec. It was great!!

Mr Taster is leaving Los Angeles!

I am glad that you have been going to the Lutefisk dinner. I have not been in the past few years. It would have been fun to connect with you there. You can check if the local Sons of Norway lodge up there has an annual dinner. Have fun in Portland and be good!! ;-)

Monrovia to Long Beach for Breakfast on Sunday?

I will be attending the LA Travel Show, which will be taking place at the Long Beach Convention Center, and was looking for a place to stop for breakfast beforehand. I was wondering if there are any new (or not so new) places that serve an awesome Country Fried Steak and/or Biscuits & Gravy that would be somewhere along the 605 between Monrovia and Norwalk, then along the 710 between the 105 and Long Beach? I would also take recs for really, really good pancakes!
I have already searched the site and it looks like the most recent was in 2013. Thanks in advance!!

DineLA Jan 2015 -- Meals, Reviews and Recommendations

Once again, we went to Lawry's. I believe that this is one of the best DineLA deals. They raised the price this year, but added items as well. You got the usual famous spinning salad, sourdough bread with butter, yorkshire pudding, choice of prime rib or salmon (PR, rare for me, please!) with a broiled lobster tail (one of the best I have ever had!). Also came with mashed potatoes and gravy and you had a choice of one more veggie: creamed spinach, creamed corn or buttered peas. I got half spinach and half corn (next time, all corn), then choice of dessert. It was either $50 or $55 (did not see the check). As always Lawry's is a wonderful dining experience with delicious food. They treat you so well (and offer the DineLA menu on weekends!!!). I usually hit up Lawry's once a year during DineLA and have yet to be disappointed.

L.A. Dish of the Month, December 2014 -- TAMALES

1) Dommy!'s mom's Yucatecan style tamales ROCK. I believe they were Brazo de Reina. But, if you can't get those, then these will have to suffice:
2) Guatamalteca's Chuchitos (Guatamalan Tamales)
3) I actually had some pretty decent tamales (spicy pork with red sauce and sweet corn) from my neighborhood Latino market - Baja Ranch Market in Monrovia.
4) The ones I make! Okay, you can't get these, either! ;-)

35th Annual Swedish Christmas Fair (Julmarknad) - Downtown, 12/7

Well, I was there yesterday and it was amazing! They had very good food - Swedish pancakes, Swedish Pea Soup (delicious), Hot Dogs, Shrimp & Hard-Boiled Egg Sandwich, Meatballs, Glogg, etc. Berolina Bakery was there with their baked goods and there were all types of food-stuff to be bought. The venue, Los Angeles Theatre on Broadway, was beautiful but it was a bit tight. This event is usually held at the Shrine Auditorium but they could not get it this year. There were vendors on 4 different floors with the shows taking place in the theatre. So many beautiful Christmas items. And such fun!
Next year, I will post earlier since I will definitely be there!
God Jul!

35th Annual Swedish Christmas Fair (Julmarknad) - Downtown, 12/7

I know there will be a dessert table but since I have not been in years (when I was little), I cannot promise anything. Sorry. I am working it today, so I can tell you for next year! ;-)

I know this is last minute, but in case you are interested. There will be a lot of Swedish Christmas food and a Glogg Bar, amongst other things. Come down if you can!

Pasadena holiday food gifts, please

Me too! Several years ago I went to shop there when my car battery died (after many minutes of my car alarm going off - at 9am!) - awesome neighbors helped me shut it off. They were so kind - let me sit in their store and wait for AAA (they had to bring me a battery). I love their goods and they have a lot of fun items. I would be thrilled with a gift from them!
Prior to that, I was walking the grounds (did a tour earlier) and they let me take some of their Seville oranges after I told them how long I had been looking for them to make marmalade (I even posted here looking for them).

The burgers at Dog Haus (Pasadena Biergarten)

I actually like their sliders very well. Have never had a full-sized burger there, but the sliders are very good.

Outing to Sabroso for Bean & Cheese Burritos...

Hey Jess. Thanks for writing and I am sorry you were unable to join us. Strange the BO thing - never noticed it. I have only been on weekends recently since I live in SGV so there are always people there when I go. It has been there since the 80s (that I remember, maybe longer) so I am not sure I agree with the "not for the world" but who knows since they never seem to make that damn burrito the same. You said you had plenty sauce and cheese. We, most, definitely, did not. Although we did definitely have enough beans! Maybe they are just giving up and it shows in their apathy when someone goes back to the counter with a complaint (as I did). Wonder what management would think if people started going directly to them. Hmmm, but I digress...
And yes, the Cupids is one of the 3 remaining "Originals" - the other two are the one you go to in Northridge (Lindley/Nordhoff) and the one in Simi. However, the daughters (or granddaughters) of the original owners opened one in the same location as one used to be in years ago in Van Nuys. Corner of Victory/Tyrone. This one is in a strip mall.

Pho Ngoon in San Gabriel

So what is the verdict? Worth it? I thought northern style Pho has a noticeable ginger flavor.
