LA search

I have been to Yang Chow a few times and each time we had a party of over 20. I found everything to be very good.

Dutch baby pancake?

Flappy Jack's in Glendora has one that is served with powdered sugar and lemons (they also have one that is filled with strawberries, bluberries and bananas). They call them German Pancakes and they are delicious!!

Mexican salsa?

Sounds familiar! I do believe that is what it was called. It was very busy. My friends get their meat there.
Also, the Ranch market I mentioned is called King Ranch. Obviously I was having a HUGE brain fart!! Sorry!

Mexican salsa?

Okay, I realized I was lying when talking about the Mariscos Martin salsa. We actually purchased the red and green salsas from a small meat market on Workman Mill Road and Don Julian. Across the street from Jack in the Box. I apologize.

Pas/SoPas report: Abricott and Firefly Bistro

Nice review, Will. Thank you! I have been to Abricott once for breakfast. I ordered the Eggs Benedict. Not your standard EB, IIRC there was curry in the Hollandaise. Took a bit of getting used to, but I did after a few bites. Eggs were cooked perfectly. I am a purist with my EB, don't want changes or alterations to it at all, but this was okay. I would order it again. The space is so cute. One of the guys behind the counter (head chef?) recognized me from my going in to Andy's Coffee Shop so he was extra attentive. Everyone was sweet. Cannot wait to try "the NEW best burger in LA!" along with other menu offerings. LOL!! Went to Firefly once and that will be the last time, sadly, since I really wanted to like it. 3 of us went during the last DineLA. Almost everything on the menu was fried. Nothing was great. The best thing were the brussels sprouts (and that is saying a lot since I never met a brussels sprout I liked!). We were all disappointed and all of us have no need to return. It is too bad, since the space is so great and the owners were wonderful.

Mexican salsa?

Absolutely agree on the salsas (in particular the green here does it for me) as well as their salsa Macha they sell to go (have some in my fridge at this moment). I also really like both the red and green from La Esquina Meat Market (also my go-to meat market for carne). It is unusual for me to like both salsas from a place (I usually like one more than the other, but here I like them both very much). Also, their meats are delicious. Always get compliments for it and requests for the address when I serve it.
Also, on Saturday I was visiting friends in La Puente and we ordered food from Mariscos Martin on Valley (extremely popular (read: busy) and extremely delicious)! We ordered some of the red and some of the green. The red was the roasted taqueria-style salsa and the green was, well, green. I did not like the green at all, but the red was fantastic. In fact, the rest of it is currently sitting in my fridge just waiting for me to poach some eggs!! ;-)
I also love, love, love the red salsa from La Estrella in Pasadena but they are extremely stingy with it. It makes me CRAZY! However, I ordered some cooked carne asada from my local (in Monrovia) Ranch 99 market and asked for some of their hottest salsa to go with it. The one that came tasted very, very similar to the one from La Estrella. However, I don't think it is any of the ones they sell from their deli case. I am not sure if they will sell that one since I have not asked.

Minnesota Road Trip

Maybe they will let me sneak this in... in Itasca State Park, we had a very nice meal with great view at the Douglas Lodge a few years ago when travelling through. Also, be sure to take the Coborn's Lake Itasca Boat Tour. We found it very informative!

Visiting Minneapolis Memorial Day weekend, what to eat?

Also, on the ethnic side of things, I went to the Ethiopian restaurant Fasika in St Paul once while visiting and was very impressed (I regularly eat at the Ethiopian restaurants in Little Ethiopia in LA, where I live). And if I calculated it right, only 6 miles from your hotel.

The Sandwich at Roma Deli

Hi Bert, I have had his burrata from Italy and it was fantastic!

Crave-able dishes!

I ABSOLUTELY get the Cupid's thing (started eating them in the 70s). Every time I go to the valley I stop and eat one there and grab a couple to go!
The Burrito de Bistec Encebollado from Las Fuentes in Reseda
Chicken from Dino's Chicken & Burgers

Se Salt

And, if it is several restaurants, I would like the whole list! Especially the semolina smelt. Thanks!

I love the Alhambra one. They have all kinds of interesting fruits and veggies. The vendors are very helpful and will describe the item and how to best cook/prepare it.

IIRC, the Saturday Pasadena one is larger, although I have not been to the La Canada one in a couple of years. Does Rockenwagner still sell at the LC one? Isn't there also one in Montrose on Sundays?

answered my own question re: Montrose: http://www.shopmontrose.com/harvest-market.html
not a heck of a whole lot info on the LC one http://www.lacanadaflintridge.com/cham/events/farmers.htm

Very true.

Moving to Claremont

I am not a huge fan of their strawberry of peach donuts (although everyone else seems to love them whenever I take them with me), but I love their bavarian creams, twists and tiger tails.

Ish, especially now that summer is upon us! Thanks for the info!

New Farmers' Market in Pasadena Playhouse District opened last Wednesday

A new Farmers' Market has popped up in Pasadena. This one opened last Wednesday on the Northeast corner of El Molino and Union. They are there from 3:30-7:30. Have not been yet, but may stop by this week. Brought to us by the same people who do the Saturday and Tuesday Pasaden FMs.

Shakshuka?

Well, it seems from what I just found when I googled Eggs in Purgatory that they seem to be more of an Italian pursuasion. Giada had a recipe which included mashed potatoes and two of them included pasta or marinara sauce. The Shakshuka seems to use whole tomatoes and roasted peppers and seems to lean towards being spicy as things like cayenne pepper and chiles are used and just seems to me like it would be more tasty and flavorful.
I just found a recipe that Aida has on Food Network that is called Eggs in Purgatory: Shakshuka! :-)

Shakshuka?

Awesome! Thanks!

Shakshuka?

THANK YOU!! Printing now! ;-)

Shakshuka?

Thanks! I wanted to try it somewhere where they know what they are doing and get an idea of what it is supposed to taste like before I try making it at home. Do you make it spicy? If so, what do you use to bring the heat? Thanks again!

Shakshuka?

Awesome! Thank you!

Off the Beaten Path Breakfasts

The breakfast burrito at either Lucky Boy or Wonder Burger in Pasadena is really good!

Off the Beaten Path Breakfasts

Also, I love the lox and bagel plate at Plate 38 in Pasadena. They deep fry their capers!
The Chilaquiles at El Matador on Irwindale Bl in Irwindale is also really good. I also see a lot of people buying their Menudo, but not being a fan, I cannot comment on it.
The German Pancake at Flappy Jack's in Glendora is amazing!

Shakshuka?

I just came across an article talking about this Middle Eastern dish of eggs in a tomato/pepper sauce and am intrigued. Does anyone know of restaurants in the SFV or SGV that make it well? I would prefer a spicy version. Thanks in advance!
