Halal at 6th Ave. and West 53rd?

Thanks Kathryn (and for the link, as well). We are going on a sailing trip from the South Street Seaport on Tuesday, so I figured it would be a good place to grab lunch before heading out. I lived in the San Francisco Bay for a number of years and from the looks of it, it appears a lot like Fisherman's Wharf there--which itself can be quite touristy. We were thinking of perhaps the Bridge Cafe or Heartland Brewery. Do you know anything about these places?

Thanks for the tips Peter. I will definitely check these out. I had read about Toloache somewhere else and am looking forward to that.

Halal at 6th Ave. and West 53rd?

Hello! I will be traveling to Manhattan August 18-22 and am looking forward to trying some delicious local eats while there. I have heard about a Halal food truck/stand at W 53rd and 6th that is supposed to be fantastic and near my hotel in midtown. Does anyone have any familiarity with this; and do you know if it offers some decent vegetarian options (not vegan, just no meat) for my daughter?

If there are other "must see" dining options in midtown, theater district, or the South Seaport area that are not too touristy, please share as well. We are a family of 5 with a range of tastes; but my two sons are most happy with burgers, pizzas, fries, and some Mexican and Italian thrown in.

Thanks! Beth

Recommendation for a cool but classy biker restaurant and bar in Vegas??

This is too obvious . . . but there is, of course, the Harley Davidson restaurant! I've actually eaten there, and it's fine if you are looking for burgers, steaks, ribs, fries, salads. It has a sort of chain-like feel to it; no real artistry or technique evident in the menu. But it will fill you up, and there are lots of Harleys to look at.

Bread formula for no-knead sourdough?

Thanks for that link. I read the recipe on the King Arthur's website, and it is quite different than the no-knead breads I have made--which generally bake in a covered dutch . I look forward to trying this one.

Bread formula for no-knead sourdough?

I would love to get some of your starter! Make sure you include clear instructions on how to reconstitute/reactivate it. I am a true newbie at sourdough baking (an old pro at sourdough eating, though!)

Bread formula for no-knead sourdough?

Sounds delicious! Where did you get your sourdough starter? I have been thinking of ordering a starter from King Arthur's Flour company; but I am afraid I won't be disciplined enough to keep up with it.

Mom and I are thinking of trying to come out sometime this summer (August, perhaps?) Maybe I can use some of yours and cultivate a family sourdough starter!

Bread formula for no-knead sourdough?

Hey Bada Bing (aka big brother!!)

Here's one to try:

http://www.themadfermentationist.com/...

It looks like it uses the same basic no-knead approach (that is, initial rising for about 18 hours; and cooked in a covered enameled cast iron dutch oven). The recipe calls for:

15 oz bread flour (about 3 cups measured with the scoop and sweep method
)1.5 tsp salt
11 oz warm filtered/bottled water (1.25 cups, plus a tablespoon)
1/2 cup sourdough starter

I haven't tried it, but it looks terrific.

I miss you!
Little Sister.
